Friday night Panther sighting
SpecialReport   Gary Coyne     10/27/2003
My wife is resigned to the fact that she's a bit of a computer widow. Sometimes more than a bit, but I do make time for her on occasion. Anyhow, it was no surprise to her that I wanted to go off to the Apple Store at the Glendale Galleria (in California) last Friday to wait for Panther's release. My son had a potluck to go to and my wife wasn't all that interested, so I went off by myself.

Apple Computer, live in Lyndhurst, Ohio [updated]
SpecialReport   Kirk Hiner     10/24/2003
Last night, I saw Shonen Knife in concert in Cleveland, Ohio. I love seeing bands in small venues like that, where you can get up close, feed off the band, and share the energy. This morning, I had the same experience...but not with a Japanese punk/pop band. It was in a store, in a "lifestyle center," with a group of salesmen and geniuses.

Comments: Email Pirates, Vandalism, & Fraud
SpecialReport   John H. Farr     10/20/2003
Either someone is going out of his or her way to make trouble, or as usual we overexposed Web writers find ourselves experiencing first-hand the latest spammer abuses. This one, however, could end up hurting a lot of people, but not the ones the perpetrators intend.

Comments: Where to Begin?
SpecialReport   John H. Farr     10/17/2003
MacCentral has just posted a brief rundown of an attempted Microsoft public-relations pre-emptive strike against iTunes for Windows. Unfortunately, they only touched the surface. Here's the original source, by the way: something called Micosoft PressPass [cough, snort].

What I Think of All This
SpecialReport   John H. Farr     10/16/2003
To tell the truth, I haven't digested it all yet. The one incontrovertible fact is that Apple has dumped a helluva lot of things to consider, all at once, into the editorial machinery. But I can say this: a Windows-compatible version of iTunes is the bee's knees, obviously. Tons o' bucks for Apple, yay team. As for the rest?

Comments: Electronic Voting Easy to Rig
SpecialReport   John H. Farr     10/15/2003
This is one of those stories that is very difficult for most people, not to mention quick-and-dirty Web site writers, to get a handle on. But we consider it to be of the utmost importance and feel the time is ripe for speaking out on the issue. Here's just one fact for starters: the software used by the Diebold touch-screen electronic voting machines rapidly being installed in many states has specifically been designed to be compatible with WinCE 3.0, making it at least theoretically possible to manipulate the program from a remote location using a PDA.

Comments: Apple Hardware
SpecialReport   John H. Farr     10/15/2003
An article has been posted at MacSurfer alleging that Apple may be redesigning certain hardware items, with the qualifier that "beyond these vague details, little else is known at this time." We wish to inform Mac users all over the world that this is completely false. We do know about Apple's plans, and there will never again be the slightest revision, upgrade, or redesign of a single Apple product for any reason whatsoever, not now, not for Macworld Expo San Francisco, not for next summer, never. No. Believe it.
