One of the hard drives on your editor's workstation is a 7500 rpm "4.5 GB" unit. The actual capacity is 4.25GB. No doubt most of you have noticed similar discrepancies in the past and found them an annoyance, such as when calculating how large to make a particular partition, for instance. According to Reuters, however, this isn't a minor issue for a group of computer users participating in a lawsuit in Los Angeles.

Homeland Security Cybersecurity Chief: Symantec's Amit Yoran

The new person in charge of convincing Americans to improve their computer security against what the Associated Press calls "hackers, disgruntled employees, commercial rivals and foreign governments" is Amit Yoran, a vice-president of Symantec Corporation.

How come selling that "great" domain name isn't working for you, you may ask? According to CBS Marketwatch, it's certainly working for a Canadian company named Communicate.com (not a bad name in itself): they recently sold four domain names to a private U.S. corporation for a combined $1,000,000.

Sun's chief scientist Bill Joy, "a software pioneer who played a crucial role in creation of the Internet but became an outspoken critic of an over-automated society," is leaving the company, according to Reuters.

Aladdin Systems Holdings reports 24% sales growth for first six months of 2003

Aladdin Systems Holdings, Inc. announced last week (before "the lights went out in Georgia") financial results for the second quarter of 2003. Net revenues increased 10% to $1.83 million in the three months ended June 30, 2003 compared to $1.67 million in the same period in 2002. The Company's Aladdin Systems subsidiary was profitable for Q2 2003 although the Company had a loss of ($246,015) or ($0.02) per basic and diluted share, due to continued costs for the Aladdin Enterprise Solutions subsidiary.

Comments: McDonald's Wi-Fi Rollout Continues

Patrons of approximately 60 Chicago-area McDonald's restaurants will be able to surf the Web or check their email from their wireless-enabled laptops, according to a freedom fries report at Yahoo. The service has already been introduced in New York City and San Francisco, although we have heard little about how it's being received.

Thank God for the Internet. How else would we be able to comment on something we've never tried or will ever be able to? Case in point: just now everyone is crowing that Microsoft "beat Apple" by launching a Windows Media Player-based music download service in Europe. Shades of BuyMusic.com! And yes, at least a few of the same disadvantages seem to apply.

"Blaster" Worm Hitting Windows, Microsoft Next

A new, rapidly-spreading, self-replicating computer virus or worm called "Blaster" has already infected tens of thousands of Windows machines all over the world in less than 24 hours and is programmed to launch a denial-of-service attack Saturday on the Microsoft site providing the patch required to fix the vulnerability, according to the New York Times.

AOL Name Poison for Time Warner?

What's in a name? Corporate reputation, among other things, especially when "AOL" is dragging down the bottom line. According to Reuters, Time Warner is thinking of effectively hiding its partnership with AOL by making a name change.
