Moore’s Guide To The Best Free And Cheap Mac Productivity Software 2002 Legacy Mac OS/ OS X Classic Mode Only
Legacy Mac OS/ OS X Classic Mode Only Browsers Netscape’s Communicator 4.7.8 Netscape’s Communicator 4.7.8, the final final version of old Netscape, is a bit long in the tooth, but is still a dependable all-round browser with integrated Java support and 128 bit encryption. Like Netscape 6.1, Communicator also includes the Messenger email client module and Composer -- a basic html editor. You can download Communicator 4.7.8 from: Word Processor Nisus Writer 4.1.6 and Nisus Compact Nisus Writer 4.1.6 is the full version of this powerful word processing program that was sold in the mid-’90s for $495.00. This is not crippleware or nagware. It’s a full-fledged, completely functional, no excuses, high-end word processor. Of course, Nisus hopes you’ll like the program so much that you’ll upgrade to their latest 5.1.3 version of Nisus Writer. However, the old 4.1.6 version is no slouch. To list just a few of Nisus 4.1.6’s capabilities: Create multimedia presentations, course materials, and live reports, presenting your message with movies, sounds, and text-to-speech. You get desktop publishing tools, online help and documentation, “smart” style sheets, auto indexing, and more. Nisus Writer 4.1.6 uses WorldScript (Language Key & Language Kit required) to put English & other Romanic languages, Japanese & other two-byte languages, and right-to-left languages like Arabic & Hebrew in one document. Note that Nisus Writer 4.1.6 is not compatible with Mac OS 9.1 and above if you are connected to an AppleTalk or TCP/IP network, or if AppleTalk is turned on by default on your Mac (AppleTalk is on by default on every Macintosh). If you are not connected to a network and AppleTalk is on, the workaround is to make AppleTalk inactive. The fewer-featured but very small Nisus Compact is also free. A streamlined (and very fast) version of Nisus Writer, Compact’s download is only 1.1 MB with dictionary and thesaurus, and the application is only 680K. Nisus (all versions) saves files as text, so nearly any word processor can read them. All versions of Nisus, even those in other languages & with varying capabilities, are compatible with Compact. A simpler version of our powerful search & replace finds text patterns, even if you don’t know the precise word you’re seeking. A graphic layer allows seamless integration of graphics. Its File Clerk Catalog lets you categorize files and instantly find them by point-and-click. Though Compact is not WorldScript-savvy, Nisus Writer is. Nisus Writer 4.1.6 has no outliner, but a free one called MORE 3.1 is now available for download. Draw/Paint Program Color It! 4.1 Free, full-featured graphics programs are thin on the ground, but at $49.95, Microfrontier’s 32-bit image editing program Color It! 4.1 is the next best thing. It’s my tool of choice for graphics tasks in everything from System 7.5.5 on my old LC 520, to Classic Mode in OS X. I think of Color It! 4.1 as “Photoshop for the rest of us.” Color It! will do almost anything I would ever do in Photoshop, and considerably more besides, and at little more than the price of average shareware. Not only that, but Color It! is fast. It launches on my not exactly bleeding edge 233 MHz PowerBook in less than four seconds, Great when all I want to do is quickly convert an image to another file format or clear clean up a downloaded JPEG. Color It! also supports Photoshop plug ins, which work exactly the same in both programs. For instance, my scanner software is a Photoshop plug in that works with either program. Microfrontier has told me that an OS X port is coming, but in the meantime, Color It! 4.1 runs very nicely (and fast!) in OS X Classic mode. Color It! 4.0 supports a wide Variety Of File Formats including GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PICT, PostScript, Photoshop, PhotoCD and more. Up to 16 Levels of Undo makes experimenting or correcting mistakes easy. Use Photoshop 3.0- compatible plug-ins, like Alien Skin’s Eye Candy and Xenofex. The basic version is freeware Vicomsoft’s FTP Client 3.0.1, is fast, supports file and directory synchronization, persistent downloads, and has an easy-to-use Finder-Like Interface For more information or to download, visit: SpellChecker SpellTools, SpellTools, which I have been using daily for several years as an auxiliary to Tex Edit Plus, BBEdit Lite, and other text editing or email programs that don’t have a built-in spellchecker, gives you a suite of text tools like prooflistening, rubber stamps, and text cleanup and editing tools in addition to a powerful spellchecker engine which I like about as well as any I’ve used. A small floating palette appears when the program is active, and contains all the Text Tools. SpellTools Features: • SpellTools spell checker. It handles all sorts of problems like ROger but also allows for neologism like TrueType, catches double wording errors errors, has computer terms like “motherboard” in the dictionary, and ignores most HTML tags. • Text-to-Speech In the following example, if this were the actual SpellTools application, highlighting the following text and clicking the second button of the SpellTools palette would speak the text: • Stamper The Stamp Tool allows you to set up rubber stamps of text that can be inserted into any document by clicking on the stamp tool pop-up and selecting the appropriate stamp from the menu. User defined stamps and standard date and time stamps are available from the menu. • Cleanup Incoming E-mail Some E-mail servers add hard carriage returns causing paragraphs not to wrap as you would like (see example below). SpellTools allows you to “Normalize Returns of Text Selection” from the text tools pop-up: • Strip Extra Spaces Sooner or later you get tired of trying to “normalize” spaces. SpellTools will strip superfluous spaces for you when you highlight text and choose “Normalize Spaces of Text Selection” or “Strip Leading Spaces of Text Selection” from the text tools pop-up. • Garbage Removal Sooner or later you get tired of backspacing and forward spacing “>” characters. SpellTools can clean up text such as the following by highlighting it and choosing “Strip “>”from Text Tools Selection” from the text tools pop-up • Find & Replace SpellTools has a standard find and replace routine that works in any application. When running SpellTools, simply choose “Find & Replace the Text Selection” from the text tools pop-up. The find and replace tool is case-sensitive. • Word Counting When running SpellTools, you can count the number of words, lines and characters of a text selection by choosing “Word Count of Text Selection” from the text tools pop-up. • Case Changing SpellTools allows you to change the case characteristics of text by highlighting it and choosing “UPPERCASE the Text Selection”, “lowercase the Text Selection”, or “Capitalize the Text Selection” from the text tools pop-up. While the version of SpellTools downloadable from the Newer Website will work with Mac OS versions up to OS 8.6, if you have OS 9.x, getting SpellTools will be a two step process. After you download the SpellTools 1.3.3 application from Newer, you then you must go to Craig Marciniak’s SpellTools Webpage and download the version 1.4 updater.
