Completely redesigned for 2002, Britannica's improved search interface provides a more powerful and flexible way for users to find the information they need. They can search the entire database and pull up all content or sort by medium text articles, audio, video, still images, maps, or tables. Alternatively, you can browse an alphabetical list of all articles, the Web's best sites, or the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary, lOth Edition. "Find" provides a variety of ways to explore the database, to satisfy different searching styles.
KnowledgeNavigator (new for 2002)
An interactive graphical browser based on Britannica's subject outline. This feature is ideal for creative brainstorming, finding topics to research, and exploring the relationships among different articles and topics in the encyclopedia.
Visual Tours (expanded and improved for 2002)
Britannica's editors have selected 44 popular topics from various fields of knowledge and created special presentations with visual enhancements that -make the subjects come alive. Topics include rock music, human anatomy, cathedrals, ecosystems and aviation. I especially liked the Britannica Classics topics and the tour of Renaissance art.
Hyperlinked Cross-references
More that 613,000 direct links between articles and index entries make it easy for users to find related information on their topics with a click of the mouse.
Multimedia Features (improved for 2002)
In addition to the visual tours, many encyclopedia articles are illustrated with video, audio, animated maps, and still images.
Timelines
Britannica timelines show the relationships between people, events, and discoveries throughout history in rich graphical form. Points on the timelines are hotlinked to related articles.
World Atlas
Users can take a tour of the world through more than 1,300 "clickable" maps
linked to articles about countries and up-to-date national statistics.
Research Organizer
Designed to help manage research in progress, this feature includes special tools that allow users to enter notes, save bookmarks and pictures, and format reports.
Update Britannica
Included free for a year with purchase of the Deluxe or Expanded Edition DVD, this feature provides new and updated articles, enabling users to keep their encyclopedia current.
The Britannica 2002 Expanded Edition DVD (MAC) provides what can be fairly described as the ultimate disk encyclopedia for Mac users with DVD capability. This edition includes more multimedia than any of the CD-ROM editions, all on a single DVD disc. The expanded Edition includes everything in the Standard Edition (see below) with the following enhancements: more than seven hours of video, audio, and animations; more than 16,400 photos and illustrations and maps; KnowledgeNavigator; new Visual Tours; more learning "interactivities" and animations; new videos; and over 80,000 articles.

Mac OS 8.6, 9.x, X or higher
iMac or G3 266 MHz or faster processor

As noted, there is also an Encyclopaedia Britannica 2002 Standard Edition CD-ROM (Windows/Macintosh OS/X only) basic version that also includes all information on one disc, which eliminates disc swapping. Ideal for people who want the Britannica's reference information available without many multimedia enhancements. Great for laptop users who like to keep Britannica loaded and at the ready. The Standard Edition CD-ROM includes the complete text from the Britannica 32-volume print set, plus additional articles not available in print (more than 55 million words); content of the 2001 Britannica Book of the Year; more than 5.400 photos, illustrations and maps; more than 23 interactive animations; and over 30 minutes of high-quality video and audio

iMac or G3 266 MHz or faster processor
128 MB physical RAM, no virtual memory
120 MB free hard-disk space

I enjoyed reviewing the digital Encyclopedia Britannica, and it represents an excellent value if you have a Mac with the muscle to run it, especially at the current rebate prices.
I'm giving The Britannica 2002 Expanded Edition DVD (MAC) a split Applelinks rating, with separate scores for content, which is excellent, and technical execution, which leaves a bit to be desired. I'm assuming that it is a port of the Windows version, and there are still some rough edges that need attention and more optimization for speed on the Mac would be nice.
