iMovie 4 & iDVD: The Missing Manual1235

That's what I like most about David Pogue. Yes, he's an engaging writer who genuinely makes fun reads out of tech manuals, but that's becoming more and more common these days. Instead, David continues to distinguish himself by making his manuals useful beyond the immediate intent. Most iMovie manuals stop after teaching you how to use the program. David stops there, too, but he begins by teaching you how to make a good movie.

It must have been a really big nut!

Photoshop CS Studio Techniques and Real World Adobe Photoshop CS1323

About two years ago, I reviewed both of these books (Photoshop 6 Studio Techniques and Real World Photoshop 6). Now, two versions of Photoshop later, both books have grown as much as Photoshop has. I gave both books five star ratings before, and nothing has changed but the books—they are better.

Photoshop CS Down & Dirty Tricks - DVD1132

I've given mostly very good reviews to his "Down & Dirty" series of books. One of my caveats to these books is that he takes one trick or one effect and explains how to do that one item. Yes there are many of these items in each book, but he's only taking one isolated item and explaining that item. In his defence, Scott clearly states that these books are a collection of side-bars without the rest of the book's content -- but those are the books!

iPhoto 4: The Missing Manual, 3rd Edition1197

What I mostly like about this book, as with most the others I've read in which the name David Pogue appears in some capacity, is that it doesn't just talk about iPhoto; what it can do and how it does it. It also spends quite a bit of time teaching readers how to take good photographs.

The Missing Manual - iPod & iTunes: Second Edition1144

The cover of iPod & iTunes: Second Edition (iP & iT) makes two boasts: First, that it "covers iTunes Music Store (Mac & PC) and the iPod mini," and second, that it has the "juiciest secrets of Apple's pocket virtuoso." Both are accurate claims, but it's the second I find most interesting; the iPod really has no juicy secrets. You may not be aware of everything it can do, but after learning some of its "tricks," I find I have little use for them.

Subtitled "The Definitive Apple History," it does a pretty decent job of living up to the claim - an interesting and enjoyable read for anyone even casually interested in the Apple Computer saga
