Apple Confidential 2.01831

It's been some five years since I reviewed Apple Confidential 1.0. I enjoyed that book a lot. Like a well made product's second version, this one is better.

Leo Laporte’s 2005 Mac Gadget Guide1382

Writing a book such as this is a tricky thing. In the amount of time it takes to write it, print it, market it and sell it, it's already outdated. That's the nature of the computer industry...something better is always waiting just around the corner. On the PC side, a book such as this would be useless, I'd think (although that hasn't stopped Leo from writing one). Here, though, it's useful in that many new Macintosh users probably didn't know that so many gadgets were Mac compatible.

Charles Moore Reviews “Revolution in The Valley - The Insanely Great Story of How The Mac Was Made”1666

More storytelling than literature, but a fascinating and entertaining chronicle of the Macintosh's conception and beginnigns

FileMaker Pro 7 Bible1192

There are parts of the book that are just great. But occasionally there are times where it seems like the authors either do not have a full grasp of what they are discussing, or do not realize how much they are speaking in "database-speak." While the book is very thick, it's not a good distribution of information.

InDesign Killer Tips and Adobe InDesign CS Bible1421

While each of these books is good, the combination of the two is very good.

iPod Fan Book and iPod & iTunes Hacks1741

The beauty of the iPod is that, like a Macintosh computer itself, it can easily be different things to different people. The ugliness of the iPod is that, like a Macintosh computer itself, it comes with a manual that's woefully ignorant of this fact. And so, as always, O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. comes to the rescue with a decent variety of books to help you get started. Which one you need will be determined by why you wanted the iPod in the first place.

iLife ‘04: The Missing Manual1034

Here's my only problem with the Missing Manual series. O'Reilly, the publisher, claims these are the books that should've been in the box. Thing is, though, they're usually far too entertaining and helpful to be actual manuals. So, although, they should've been in the box, reality would indicate they never would've been in the box. Until iLife '04: The Missing Manual.

GarageBand: The Missing Manual1046

This is a great book, and although those familiar with GarageBand may benefit from some of the power user tricks and techniques, it'll mainly be useful for those who've wanted to learn GarageBand and didn't know where to start. On the other hand, I also feel there could've been more: more talk about music theory, more tutorials to get people started, more discussion on the various resources available to GarageBand users, more about optimizing your rig to get the best sound from external instruments, etc.
