Rockies using video iPods to study swings, hitters

From: Eric Matthieu

Hi Charles,

I just love to hear stories like this, and think Apple should link it on their Hot News web page... http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2486924

"It's a good way to refresh yourself on how you got guys out," Jennings said. "It's an amazing concept."

The Rockies have taken the iPod beyond entertainment. And the idea has caught on -- teams such as Florida and Seattle have called the Rockies to explore their innovative use of the iPod.

"It wasn't like we invented the wheel," said Rockies assistant video coordinator Brian Jones, who came up with the idea after the video iPod was released last November. "We're using Apple's technology as best we can. We figured if you can watch music videos by rock 'n' roll and by country, why can't you watch at-bats by San Francisco and pitches by Jason Schmidt?"

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5340

Apparently this is an idea just catching on in baseball. Loved this comment...

Jones thinks his iPod idea soon will be used across college and professional sports.

The fact that I stumbled across the article on the front page of ESPN and not some computer-related site says a lot to me (no offense). Maybe Steve Jobs and Jonathon Ives envisioned uses for the iPod beyond MP3 playback from the get-go, or at least they knew it had potential for bigger and better things. Anyway, great PR in the mainstream press for an already wonderful device (as if it needed it).

I'm sure there are many ways iPods are being utilized beyond Apple's intended marriage with iTunes, and would love to hear examples from other readers.

Cheers,
Eric

New camera review...

From Kevin Shaffer

Hi Charles!

Thought I'd forward a link to a new review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC -L1; which is nearing availability soon to the buying public. Since this is a full SLR with live-action video finder and several great features, it is being awaited by many who want what this offers.

How about a lens with F-stops? And a shutter speed dial where you'd expect it on an SLR? For an intro and further link to the review, see:
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0606/06062101panasoncdmcl1.asp

Maybe I'll have to consider buying one of these; even if the lenses probably will cost more than those from Canon/Nikon in some cases. Since I have several film SLRs, chosing something that can't use those lenses even with wishful thinking for best results, is a step of faith. Too bad there aren't less costly digital-film backs for 35mm SLRs, huh?

Well, thought I'd drop you a line; take care and thanks for your online writings and reviews.

Hi Kevin;

Food for thought. I wonder if my collection of Olympus OM lenses from my old (1974!) OM-1 SLR rig will work with any of Olympus's digital SLRs. And the digital back idea is intriguing. When the OM-1 slod new, one of its vaunted features was the ability to accommodate optional backs for motor drives. 250 shot film drums, etc.

Now, I wouldn't expect anyone to offer a digital back for a camera more than 30 years old, but for more recent Nikons, Olympii, and suchlike it would make sense.

re: The Gateway Profile 6 Goes Up Against The iMac

From Dave Barnes

Charles,

I read the article and then went to the Gateway website. I configured the 19-inch version to be similar to the 20-inch iMac. The iMac costs $50 more. For that $100 you get: PowerPoint and a 20-inch wide screen monitor. Why anyone would buy the Gateway is beyond me.

Beats me, Dave.

Even if there were several hundred dollars difference in price......

It's worth paying a premium to be clear of Windows.

The myvu? eyewear...

From Kevin Shaffer

Hi Charles!

I'd thought to check some old links, and discovered the MyVu? personal eyewear viewer is available now; I know of nobody who has tried or owns these....

The link:
http://www.myvu.com/

Seems to me, if there is a proper adapter for these, they could be very nice to have -instead of a second display- with portable Macs
that can support having their display off and run the external with the main display closed. A great way to view video content on a sunny day, maybe? But I have heard nothing...

Wonder if they'd send out a pair for you to review, and if they have suggestions for an adapter unit to use these as video for a newer MacBook or PowerBook...? If they do, you could write us a review!

Hope you are doing well, and thank you for your well written informational bits online! Take care...

Orders of magnitude

From Eolake Stobblehouse

Florida State University has put up a very interesting page on their site. It begins as a view of the Milky Way Galaxy viewed from a distance of 10 million light years away and then zooms towards Earth in powers of 10. As it approaches Earth, it finally reaches an Oak Tree. Then continues...

Click the link below.

Once the slides end, you will see "Auto." Click on it and you can reverse the process.
