Review of SuperDuper! Backup Software?

From: Bruce Williamson

Charles,

In the last month I've started using a backup program called SuperDuper! that I really like. It's fast, does true clones as well as incremental backups & a variety of customizable scripts, but hides its power behind a very elegant and simple interface. The various dialogues and prompts are actually written in clear English, instead of the convoluted, torturous, confusing instructions and procedures found in other often over-priced backup applications. (One in particular comes to mind.)

I whole-heartedly recommend a look! Visit http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html for a free demo copy (that only does full clones). The $19.95 price for the full version that does incremental backups is a steal considering what some competitors charge for shoddier goods. I would have paid twice that much to get the piece of mind I now have in doing my daily backups. Plus, I have received prompt and personal response (at no extra charge) to any questions I've had. Considering the fact that many companies today try to exclude their customers from excellent technical support, Shirt Pocket Software deserves to be listed somewhere in a Tech Support Hall of Fame.

Hi Bruce;

Thanks for the mini-review and commentary. It's great to hear about good product experiences.

Dan Knight at Low End Mac also has good things to say about Super Duper: http://lowendmac.com/macdan/05/0207.html http://lowendmac.com/reviews/superduper.html

I must check it out.

Opera 8 tip for Web developers

From BearyandBow

I found another use for Opera 8 for web developers besides checking for standards based rendering of web pages and seeing how the site looks without stylesheets. You can make the size of the web page smaller - which is a faster way to make screenshots of deisgns for portfolios

I also found the links provided with Opera to be a comedic relief.

LaserWriter and OS X

From Michael

Hi Charles,

I have intermittent problems printing from MacOS X to an old HP 5MP laserwriter. I go from my PowerBook to an Asante hub to an AsanteTalk (LocalTalk) box to my printer. From time to time printing doesn’t work, even though "Make AppleTalk active" is turned on. I talked with an Apple tech support rep the other day who told me that AppleTalk is not supported in MacOS X, so he was not surprised that I have printing issues. This problem doesn’t happen a lot, but it is very annoying. I’m thinking of getting a new printer.

Another piece of the puzzle filled in. Thanks for the report.

The Burning question

From Harold Thompson

Hello Charles,

I'm thinking, without many details to go on- will the new super chip from IBM, Sony, Toshiba be the answer to a fast processor in the powerbook?? If you can put one in a game player then why not....

I guess we'll see shortly,

Harold

Hi Harold.

Time will tell.

The Register's Andrew Orlowski scooped the main news blitz on this one with a series of analysis reports last week.

I am sure there will be a flurry of comments on this; you may have to start a "Cell Chip Muse" grin I did read Orlowski's column, I guess we'll have to wait till all the people who really understand all of this weighs in. It does look promising to the casual observer.

Orlowski's latest is here:
