Moore’s MailBag - Friday, February 4, 2005 •MooresMailBag •Comments •Tell-a-Friend Permissions/Updates, etc "Aftereffects" of the latest Apple Security Update Netscape 7.2 Mail Problem Pages NVU .8[/url] Permissions/Updates, etc From Mike Kochkodin Greetings from the past, Charles. I am running 10.3.7 on a Pismo 400 and an iMac SE 400 (graphite). I check Software Update about once a week and usually wait to see comments on various lists as to whether or not there are problems before I download the update. I started both systems with the original Panther that I got at the Apple Store and have never had a problem with an update thru SU. As far as permissions are concerned, I never had any idea as to what they were or did...After seeing numerous comments about them, I called Apple Tech and asked about them. I was told that the safest way to do an SU was to boot from Panther disk, run the First Aid disk repair then go into the Disk Utility after rebooting and run the Permissions Repair from there...NOT..from the Panther disk because that would use the original permissions... NOT the new ones that came with the SU's. I have noticed that when I run the PR from the DU that there are a few changes from the original permissions. So what I do is following..Before installing SU...Run PR from DU, Run Disk Repair from original Panther disk and then run Disk Warrior 3.02. (The DW 3.0.2 has saved me several times when the system got corrupted and wouldn't do anything..but that's another story!!!!) After doing this, I then run SU and do the installs I want...I then run the Permissions Repair from the DU...I know it seems like overkill, BUT I have never had a problem (Knock on wood!!!) since doing it this way...The tech at AC said that this way, the system is optimized before the update and after the update. I hope this helps!!! I also am on Verizon DSL...What a difference from 56k dial-up....Hope you can get it soon!!! I do have a question for you and/or the list...I have an Apple PLW nTR printer that i want to hook up to either of these machines..I got an Asante thing that is supposed to do this...Does anyone have experience doing this? I would appreciate it if any one familiar with how to add this printer to these systems would contact me ... Keep up the good work...I look forward to seeing every one of your columns!!! You have been an invaluable resource for me!!! Regards and best Wishes, Mike Kochkodin PS: Just a minor clarification..when I run the permission repair, it is directly from the HD...I shut down all running items then go into the Disk Utility and run it from there..NOT from the Panther disk... Thanks for the report, Mike, especially the tip about running Repair Permissions from an alternate boot disk. I have no experience connecting a Personal Laser Writer to an OS X machine, but hopefully someone in readerland can help. Charles "Aftereffects" of the latest Apple Security Update Visionaerie I am amazed that no one has mentioned the "aftereffects" of the latest Apple Security Update. Those effects are: I am no longer able to simply click on an icon to open or launch it. Instead, I get a cute little menu of choices. That is nice, but is there some way I can keep that menu while still preserving the traditional (and faster) clickability? And regarding pain relief, there are actually plenty of natural alternatives: feverfew (great for migraines), ginger, turmeric, Omega-3 oils, and S-ame (just to mention a few). I cured my own asthma with nutrition, so don't let the "pharmacrats" get you down. "Thinking different" isn't just for Apple, it's a liberating way of life. Hi V. Yes, this latest security update seems to have been a particular stinker. There were lots of complaints over on MacFixit. I never bother with the security updates. The fractional version updates are bad enough. I'm still getting only four days average uptime between reboots to restore modem support. If I try to stretch it too long, I get hard lockups. For the first three days, everything is fine. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm actually pretty intensively into nutrition. Have been for years, both from my own research and under the guidance of naturopaths. I grow feverfew in our garden, and I use ginger, take lots of Omega-3 oils, and so forth. Unfortunately, a lot of my pain is nerve pain which doesn't really respond well to most painkillers pharmaceutical or naturopathic. Good to hear about your asthma cure. Charles Netscape 7.2 Mail Problem From Mike Kochkodin Charles, Back again...I tried to set up an email acct at NS webmail...It accepted the name and password but when I tried to send a message from the acct...I keep getting a message that nothing can be sent because of an error #110 and to retry...fruitlessly I might add....Also, when I try to send a message to this acct, it gets bounced back with a User Unknown message...I can check the acct and it opens up and says there are no new messages... I forget what you use for mail but do you remember anyone figuring out what the problem is? I seem to remember some comments about this quite a while ago...This problem developed after I upgraded to 7.2 last year and I just let it drop at the time...Also, my IM got wasted after the update...In the lower versions of IM you could do a search for Buddies according to different classifications but I can't seem to figure out how to find that feature in 7.2. Do you or any 'lista using this know how to do this? Regards and thanks in advance, Mike K. Hi Mike; I'm a Eudora fan. I haven't experimented with Netscape Mail for some time, and anything I would have to say on your problem would be speculative. Perhaps someone out there has encountered a similar issue and s solution. Charles Pages From BearyandBow A Mac news site interviewed the 3 leading devlopers of word processors about Pages and its impact on their companies. It is only in French, but I translated most of it with Google translate. Mellel is going to try to evolve into a program more like Pages (in the next couple/several months) whereas Nisus seems to think they will try to be as different as possible from Pages and focus on text processing, while Mariner is going to promote their spreadsheet program heavily until Apple comes out with a spreadsheet. The only one that will have a chance with their strategies is Nisus. http://www.macgeneration.com/mgnews/depeche.php?aIdDepeche=114140 NVU .8 From BearyandBow NVU .8 came out yesterday. They have now fixed it so keyboard shortcuts for cut and paste work on the Mac. Very full featured and doesn't crash very often. I have used it for some serious design work and have given up Freeway Express for it. Works with 10.1.5 and higher. http://www.nvu.com/ Thanks for the reports. Ben.
