Free Open Source Web Publishing Tool Nvu Now Available at Nvu.com

Nvu, the free, easy-to-use Web editor and authoring system for desktop Linux, Macintosh and Microsoft Windows users, was released yesterday in beta version in advance of the forthcoming Nvu 1.0 product sponsored by Linspire, Inc. Nvu gives non-technical computer users the power to create, edit and publish professional, attractive Web sites, much like Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver. Based on Mozilla Internet technology and Netscape Composer, the tool allows users to easily author and manage rich Web documents without programming or HTML coding. Nvu 1.0 beta is available for free download at:
http://www.nvu.com

Nvu is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editor, which means users can create Web pages as easily as they would type a word processing document -- complete with font pickers and paragraph and table controls. Instead of typing in HTML code and guessing what the published Web site may look like, Nvu allows users to constantly see how their site will look even before it is posted online. While the user works in a friendly, visual environment much like a word processor, Nvu creates the HTML code in the background -- code which can easily be viewed or directly edited using Nvu's tabs. Publishing pages to a Web site is accomplished with one click using Nvu's FTP Site Management feature.

Because users can quickly toggle between the WYSIWYG editing mode and the HTML code mode, Nvu is also ideal for more advanced users or those wishing to learn HTML programming, as they can easily observe the interaction between the HTML code and what will actually appear in the Web browser. To see more features of Nvu, visit:
http://www.nvu.com

Linspire, Inc., producer of the popular desktop Linux operating system, started the Nvu project as a complement to the other desktop Linux Web browsers and tools offered by the leading open source innovator Mozilla. Nvu was created from the code base of Netscape Composer, one of the most successful first-generation WYSIWYG Web editors.

Mozilla was broken off from Netscape after Netscape was acquired by AOL. The Mozilla group continued development of an open source Internet suite, pouring most of their efforts into browsers and email programs. Their work has recently resulted in Firefox, a hugely successful Internet browser, and the soon-to-be-released Thunderbird email program. Since most of Mozilla's efforts were going into the development of Firefox and Thunderbird, there were less resources available for advancing a Web authoring tool based on Netscape Composer. Linspire contributed to this part of the project by providing more development resources and capital to the Composer-based product -- renamed Nvu -- to round out the Mozilla Internet suite.

"Mozilla has done phenomenal work developing a Web suite with alternatives to Microsoft, including the Firefox browser and soon, the Thunderbird email program. But there was a void in developing a Web publishing tool, which is why we adopted the Nvu project," said Michael Robertson, CEO of Linspire, Inc. "Our hope is that Nvu will compete with FrontPage just like Firefox competes with Internet Explorer."

Nvu is available in many different languages, including English, Italian, Russian, and Chinese. The cross-platform Web editor works on numerous operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Apple OSX, OS/2, FreeBSD, Linspire, and many Linux-based systems. Since Nvu 1.0 is a beta version, Linspire would appreciate community feedback on the product -- to submit a comment or suggestion, email

WindowDragon 1.0b2 Lets You Drag Windows By Clicking Anywhere [OS 10.2 up]

WindowDragon allows you to move windows by clicking and dragging anywhere within the window structure. It also allows you to move all of an application's windows at once.

WindowDragon requires Unsanity's Application Enhancer in order to function. If you do not have Application Enhancer installed on your system, it can be downloaded from http://www.unsanity.com/haxies/ape

WindowDragon is configured from the APE Manager preference pane. To access the WindowDragon configuration window, choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu, click on the APE Manager icon, and choose WindowDragon from the Application Enhancers list on the left side of the window.

Clicking the "Drag Anywhere" checkbox toggles the feature on and off. To set the desired mouse and modifier key combination to be used for Drag Anywhere functionality, hold the modifiers down and click the box next to the "Drag Anywhere" text with the appropriate mouse button. The box will be updated to reflect your new settings.

Clicking the "Bring Window to Front" checkbox allows you to toggle between WindowDragon's two window dragging behaviors. If "Bring Window to Front" is enabled, the window that is being dragged will become the front window. If the feature is turned off, the window will not be brought forward. Holding down the command key while using "Drag Anywhere" will use the alternate behavior.

The "Drag All" feature is similar to "DragAnywhere" except that it allows you to drag all of an application's windows at once.

Clicking the "Exclude List" tab in the preference window will allow you to specify applications that you don't want WindowDragon to affect.

New in this version:
- Added "Drag All" functionality.
- Allow user to choose whether dragged windows are brought to front by default.
- Performance increase for Cocoa apps.
- Fixed a bug that could cause windows in Carbon apps to jump to a new location when initially clicked on.
- Carbon windows can no longer be dragged above the menu bar (on the main screen) or the top of the screen (on all other screens).
- Expire date extended to January 10, 2005.

Known issues:
- Cocoa applications are incorrectly activated if the primary mouse button (Mouse 1) is used for the Drag Anywhere feature.
- It is not currently possible to use the Drag Anywhere feature with windows in Apple's X11 program.
- WindowDragon preference pane may have problems displaying under Mac OS X 10.2.
- Some Carbon windows (e.g. Finder windows) can still be dragged partially above the menu bar.
- Drag All can act kind of funky if a sheet is being displayed in one of the dragged windows.
- A crash occurs if windows are closed while being dragged (via cmd-w or similar) in Cocoa in apps.
- WindowDragon needs an installer.

System requirements:
Mac OS X 10.2 or higher

Renicer 1.2.8 Graphical Tool To Automatically Set Process Priorities [OS X 10.1 up]

The Unix underpinnings of Mac OS X allow users to assign priorities to processes with the Renice command. Higher priority processes get more CPU time and vice versa. The downside is that you have to use the terminal, and you have to know the renice syntax, process ID's, etc. Wouldn't it be nice to automatically adjust application priorities on the fly? Renicer is designed to run in the background, and automatically prioritizes whatever application is in front. It also ups the priority of the Finder, Dock, and Window Server. Renicer is designed to be simple enough for novices, yet flexible enough for the power user.

Features

Attractive, easy to use interface.
Simple set and forget operation.
Automatically raises priority of frontmost application.
Increases priority of the Finder, Dock, and Window Server.
User adjustable priority levels.
Maintains log of priority changes.
Maintains list of applications that get reduced priority.

Priority levels are automatically adjusted whenever apps launch.
Renicer is application based for convenience and stability.
All changes are removed when Renicer quits (default).
All changes can persist if Renicer quits (optional).
Illustrated Documentation.

Mac OS X version 10.1 or higher
