Due Next From Apple: Refreshed 20- And 24-Inch iMacs

AppleInsider reports:

Assuming last minute snags are avoided, the coming weeks should bring new iMacs, rounding out Apple's 2008 hardware introductions as the company enters the holiday shopping season with one of its strongest product portfolios ever.

Avid AppleInsider readers will notice that our little 2008 hardware roadmap... has thus far panned out quite nicely, clearing the way for new iMac models to edge their way to market sometime in the next four weeks.

Beware Bogus Security Software

Intego warns:

There's a new trend out there designed to scam computer users: web sites that sell bogus software. Not only does the software not do what it claims to do, but the companies that sell this "software" get a hold of your credit card and can do even more damage to your bank account.

Intego has spotted one such company, claiming to sell Macintosh antivirus software. MacGuard claims the following:

Macguard's high-tech system scanner will search your hard drive for malicious objects such as Adware, Spyware and Trojans, cleaning your files, eliminating the threats, and securing your privacy in just a matter of minutes. Its Real Time smart protection will also ensure new threats will not even reach your desktop.

But what's interesting is that Winiguard claims exactly the same thing. Not only is that claim the same, but every word on the two websites is identical.

One way you can spot a fake is that when you click what is supposedly the product's download link, nothing downloads. So you can see that there's no software behind the web site.....

How-To: Screen sharing with OS X 10.4

MacFixIt says:

Many users with two computers take advantage of the screen sharing features in Mac OS X to manage both computers. This is a convenient feature that was introduced in Mac OS X 10.5, but users who still have 10.4 installed on one of their computers have experience issues when trying to connect.....

There are several options users can install in Tiger to enable screen sharing....

Apple MacBook In Red Plastic Coming To Best Buy?

SlashGear's Chris Davies reports:

With Apple's old white MacBook still on sale as the "budget" option, the assumption has been that it's the end of the line for the plastic-shelled versions. However a new Best Buy SKU listing has led to suggestions that Apple is planning a last-ditch alternative color for the laptop: records for an "INTEL - Apple sku red", with an image of the white plastic MacBook and the $999.99 price tag, have appeared....

Pink Apple Macintosh Laptop

laptopsarena.com's Sierra says:

We know that many of you are searching for a pink Apple Macintosh laptop computer and that there are many sites claiming to provide information on how to get one, but they just tell you long stories forgetting the essential part, which is to tell you exactly where to find them.

Unfortunately, Apple didn't provide colored laptop computers after the special edition of the iBook Clamshell, but after doing some research over the Internet, we found some good solutions to help you create your own pink Apple Macintosh laptop, which is called customization.....

Netbooks Take Ten Per Cent Of Euro PC market

The Register's Tony Smith reports:

first gartner and now idc has highlighted the rise of the small, cheap computer as one of key product categories keeping the european pc market afloat.

laptops too are helping keep vendors' heads above water, and together with the sccs helped shipments of all types of personal computer grow 27 per cent year on year during q3, idc said.

notebook shipments were up 52 per cent when comparing q3 2008 with q3 2007. scc shipment growth can't really be considered since the first one, the eee pc 701, didn't go on sale until q4 2007, and up to that point the only alternative, the umpc, didn't really trouble the score-keeper.

we can say that european netbook shipments went from zero in q3 2007 to over 2m in q3 2008, a figure that's just under ten per cent of the 27.9m pcs shipped into europe in q3 this year.

Apple Is Greener, Greenpeace Says, But Has More To Do

Sci-Tech Today's Frederick Lane reports:

At last Tuesday's laptop event on the Apple campus in Cupertino, Calif., the environment got a lot of attention. CEO Steve Jobs, who has been pushing for a "greener Apple" for months, flatly declared that the new Mac laptops, with their unibody aluminum construction and less toxic parts, "are the industry's greenest notebooks."

The verdict from the planet's leading environmental group, Greenpeace, is a qualified yes. "Compared to where Apple was before Tuesday," said Casey Harrell, Greenpeace International's toxics campaigner, "its laptops are definitely better. That in and of itself is a good thing. But not all toxic pieces have been eliminated yet."

Apple's Snow Leopard to sport Cocoa Finder and ImageBoot

Appleinsider's Kasper Jade reports:

Apple next-generation Snow Leopard operating system will introduce a massive re-write of the Mac OS X Finder and debut a new feature called ImageBoot, AppleInsider has learned.

People familiar with matter say the Finder, which currently stands as one of the oldest Carbon-based applications in the Mac OS portfolio, has been completely re-written in the company's native object-oriented application program environment called Cocoa.

Apple, Psystar Agree To Dispute Resolution Process

CNET's Tom Krazit reports:

Apple and Psystar have agreed to pursue a mediated settlement to their legal dispute over Psystar's Open Computers.

The Mac Observer turned up a court filing from earlier this month in the Apple-Psystar case noting that the two parties have agreed to participate in the Alternative Dispute Resolution process. As you may recall, Apple sued Psystar earlier this year for copyright infringement after Psystar began selling low-cost Open Computers with Mac OS X preinstalled. Psystar then countersued Apple on antitrust grounds.

ADR, as it is known, is a way to bypass the costly legal process as well as keep the outcome private, which is one of Apple's favorite words. I downloaded the document in question from the U.S. District Court of Northern California's Web site (click here for PDF), and it says that Apple and Psystar have agreed to three portions of the ADR process: non-binding arbitration, early neutral evaluation, and mediation. The parties have agreed to hold their sessions by January 31, 2009.

Steve Wozniak: Apple founder, PC revolutionary - Utah computer advisor

The Salt Lake Tribune's Paul Beebe reports:

Steve Wozniak, who helped start the personal computer revolution, is a man with an eclectic resume.

Apple co-founder. Philanthropist. Computer geek. Cult icon. Grade school teacher.

Advisor to Salt Lake City-based Fusion-io.

Fusion-io's computer memory cards hold enormous quantities of data that the company says can be stored and accessed at speeds equal to the fastest storage networks on the market, but are small enough to fit into the palm of a hand.

6 Quick Tips Using Favicons in Safari

My First Mac's Chris Kerins reports:

First off, there's a name for that little graphic to the left of the web address in your Safari tool bar. It's called a favicon (which is short for favorites icon). Website designers create the icon to brand their website in your menus and address bar. But did you know you can put it to good use in Safari?

How To Protect Your Battery

CreativeBits' Ivan says:

We all love portable devices because they provide flexibility. Ironically most of the time they are being used as desktop devices and are plugged in all the time.

This is potentially a problem because batteries wear off much more faster if they are not being used enough.....

Note: An Apple Apple Knowledge Base article says:

Rechargeable lithium-based technology currently provides the best performance for your Apple notebook computer, iPod, or iPhone.

Most lithium-ion batteries use a fast charge to charge your device to 80% battery capacity, then switch to trickle charging.....

You can charge all lithium-ion batteries a large but finite number of times, as defined by charge cycle.

Using and recharging 100% of battery capacity equals one full charge cycle.

A charge cycle means using all of the battery's power, but that doesn't necessarily mean a single charge. For instance, you could listen to your iPod for a few hours one day, using half its power, and then recharge it fully. If you did the same thing the next day, it would count as one charge cycle, not two, so you may take several days to complete a cycle. Each time you complete a charge cycle, it diminishes battery capacity slightly, but you can put notebook, iPod, and iPhone batteries through many charge cycles before they will only hold 80% of original battery capacity.

The length of time your battery will power your device depends on how you use it. For instance, watching a DVD will use up your notebook battery's power more quickly than simple word processing.

PowerGorilla - The Answer To The MacBook Air's Battery Charge Issue?

Macworld UK's Mark Hattersley reports:

The MacBook Air is one of Apple's more contentious products, and a lot of criticism has been levelled at Apple's decision to include a fixed internal battery, which can be a problem for power users.

Of course, with an average charge of four to five hours it's hardly a problem for day-to-day use, but for business travellers especially those on long-haul flights being unable to extend the power supply can be a deal-breaker. Powertraveller hopes to provide a solution to this problem with the Powergorilla, a portable charger.
