Apple Safari 3.1.1 For Leopard And Tiger And Firefox 2.0.0.14 Released •Software Updates •Internet •Software News •Comments •Tell-a-Friend Apple has released a version 3.1.1 update for Safari. I've downloaded the just shy of 40 MB standalone installer (recommended update mode, see below), but haven't installed it yet as the installation requires a reboot, and I haven't had the time as yet. This document describes the security content of Safari 3.1.1: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1467 If you're a MacBook Air user, according to an eWeek report, the Safari 3.1.1 update includes a patch for the flaw the allowed the hijack of a MacBook Air at this year's CanSecWest "PWN to OWN" security contest. Safari 3.1.1 is available for: Mac OS X v10.4.11, Mac OS X Server v10.4.11, Mac OS X v10.5.2, Mac OS X Server v10.5.2, Windows XP or Vista. There are two separate versions of Safari 3.1.1 - one for Leopard and one for Tiger so be sure to check the correct download option on Apple's Safari download page. What about Software Update? Well, if you must, but you run a greater risk of having post-update problems. MacFixIt notes that "release after release, Software Update has proven to be a more problematic method for updating Mac OS X applications, components and the system itself relative to standalone downloads. This holds true for Safari 3.1.1, with which several users are experiencing installation failure, post-update launch failure or other problems after using Software Update. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1467 "The fix, of course, is to use Apple's standalone Safari download. Even if you originally used the standalone package to update Safari, re-applying it can resolve some launch issues and other problems." I'll second that. I make it a policy never to update anything using Apple's Software Update, even when I have access to a broadband connection. You can download the standalone installer here. http://www.apple.com/safari/download/ Firefox Releases Version 2.0.0.14 Firefox also released a maintenance update this week. I find I like the Firefox 3 public beta so much better than Firefox 2 that I haven't bothered with the last few version 2 updates, but some folks are sticking with Firefox 2 for now because they use plugins with it that haven;t yet been updated to support Firefox 3, or are way about using beta software. Personally, I've found the Firefox 3 betas stable and unbuggy.
