Strategy Analytics: Mobile Phone Shipments Hit 1.12 Billion Units in 2007 - Apple ships 2.3 million iPhones In Q4 2007
According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global mobile phone shipments grew a modest 12 percent year-over-year, to reach 1.12 billion units in 2007. Nokia had a strong fourth quarter and reached 40% share for the first time ever.
Bonny Joy, Analyst at Strategy Analytics said, "Global cellphone shipments rose to 1.12 billion units in 2007, up 12% from 1.00 billion in 2006. We expect the economic environment to be tougher this year and forecast slower growth of 10%, for 1.24 billion units worldwide in 2008."
The report also notes that Apple shipped 2.3 million iPhone units worldwide, for a healthy 0.6 percent share in Q4 2007.
"We predict Apple to be among the world's top ten vendors by the end of 2008," says: the Strategy Analytics analysts.
Neil Mawston, Director at Strategy Analytics, added, "During the fourth quarter of 2007, 332 million mobile phones were shipped globally. Nokia was the star performer, registering a record 40% share. Despite fierce competition from ambitious rivals such as Samsung and Apple, Nokia still managed to gain ground last year. A famous brand, attractive handset lineup, strong technology portfolio and the industry's best logistics have enabled Nokia to achieve this impressive milestone."
Other findings from Strategy Analytics' Q4 2007 Global Handset Market Share Update report include:
Motorola registered 12.3% global share in Q4 2007, down sharply from 22.4% in Q4 2006. A failure to replace the popular Razr model has been the main cause of decline;
Sony Ericsson continued to slow down. Its annual growth rate has plunged in recent quarters. Improved handset portfolios from Samsung, LG and Nokia are starting to have a competitive impact on Sony Ericsson.

Singapore's Optus in iPhone talks?

Singapore Telecommunications is using its regional clout in talks with Apple to gain exclusive rights to sell the iPhone, news that bodes well for Australian consumers.
Thai daily, the Bangkok Post, has reported that SingTel, which owns Australian mobile operator Optus, is in negotiations with Apple to launch the iPhone in Thailand and elsewhere in the region.

Motorola May Face Razr 2 Flop as iPhone Sales Surge
Bloomberg's Ville Heiskanen reports:
Motorola Inc.'s Greg Brown, in his first earnings report as chief executive officer, may post disappointing sales of the Razr 2 phone after holiday shoppers flocked to Apple Inc.'s iPhone.
Motorola probably sold 2 million Razr 2s, the slimmer camera phones Brown is relying on to revive revenue, in the fourth quarter, said Lawrence Harris, a former Oppenheimer & Co. analyst in New York. Steve Jobs's Apple may have sold 2.4 million iPhones.

AT&T Unveils iPhone Business Rate Plans
Computerworld's Gregg Keizer reports:
AT&T Inc. on Monday unveiled business plans for Apple Inc.'s iPhone, the first time that the mobile carrier has courted corporate customers of the smart phone. But the lowest-cost data plan is still two-and-a-half times higher than a comparable consumer plan.
The news comes on the heels of reports - still unconfirmed - that IBM Corp. will soon add support for the iPhone to its Lotus Notes enterprise messaging system.

Apple lowers iPhone shipment projection for fiscal 2Q08, says paper
Digitimes' Steve Shen reports:
Apple has lowered its projected shipments of iPhones from two million units to around 1-1.2 million units for the second fiscal quarter, which will end March 2008, the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) quoted sources at Apple's handset component suppliers in Taiwan as indicating.
