I don't mean to be negative or critical of a bunch of people who've undoubtedly put a ton of work into the project, but that doesn't look or sound like it's even remotely in the ballpark of what makes Eudora Eudora. I'm just about to give up hope on this one. I want Eudora, not Thunderbird (or any other three-pane mail app) with some Eudora-ish features. Hi Fritz; What you said. Unfortunately, maybe a somewhat Eudora-ized Thunderbird is all we can hope for from this project. That certainly seems to be the subtext of their mission statement. In which case, I shall keep on using Eudora 6.2.4 as long as it will work. Charles Re: Eudora 8.0.0b1: First Impressions - I want Eudora, not Thunderbird From Fritz; Yeah, 6.2.4 works just fine for me as it is (hopefully it won't break in OSX 10.5). I just had such high hopes that the open-source community would take the Qualcomm source and run with it. Instead we get a half-assed Eudora motif for Thunderbird, and I have a hard time fathoming how the Penelope team can look at that and think it's anything remotely like the original. But, hey hope springs eternal, and maybe it'll bear fruit eventually. Hi Fritz; I hope so, but as with you it's not a very lively hope. Classic Eudora was a work of genius - one of the best computer applications of all time, period. A very tough act to follow. I expect there were ways it could have been improved, especially IMAP support (so I understand) for those who use it. However, it was already the fastest, most stable, most infinitely user-configurable POP 3 client with the best search engine. Tough to improve on - at least nobody has so far. Charles Eudora 8.0.0b1: First Impressions - I have no realistic hope.... From Mark Charles, I share your pain. I have no realistic hope that the Penelope team will deliver Eudora as we know it on the Thunderbird base. My Eudora folder (Mail + attachments) is around 740 megs, and it continues to function without a hiccup. Here's hoping Apple maintains Classic application functionality well beyond Leopard.. Now, time to get ready for Felix. Could be a wild week here in Mexico... Ciao! M Hi Mark; At least Eudora 6.2.4 is a carbonized OS X native application, so hopefully Carbon will continue to be supported for several versions of the Mac OS yet. Felix is a mean one. Batten down the hatches and stay dry! Charles Eudora 8.0.0b1: First Impressions - Bring On AppZapper From Dave Barnes I tried it and could not figure how to create my own Incoming Attachments folder. Followed that with the use of AppZapper. Hi Dave; I haven't got that far with it yet. I added a third email account, and actually was successful in getting it to send mail through an alternate SMTP server, but the new account refuses to show up in the left pane with the other two. Sigh. Charles Eudora 8.0.0b1: First Impressions - IMAP Preformance From dovale Hi Charles, I was looking forward for this one as I was "forced" to switch from classic Eudora tp Apple's Mail when I moved from POP to IMAP account. How is the IMAP support in Eudora 8. Thanks, dovale Hi doyale I'm afraid I'm not able to be much help with this question - my ignorance of IMAP is encyclopedic. Off the top of my head, I would expect Eudora 8's IMAP performance to be similar to Thunderbird's, so you might be able to check out some Thunderbird reviews that address how that program handles IMAP. In general, I would imagine that IMAP support is one of the (very few) areas where Eudora 8.0 is an improvement over classic Eudora. Charles MacAce Launches MacMate Online Service From W.Scott Whitlock The tagline is "Cheaper than .mac." .Mac is $99/year for the 10GB of storage. This is 59 pounds per year if you are paying annually. That transfers to over $120/year, 20% more expensive than .mac. Hi Mr. Whitlock You're right. MacMate can be as cheap as £3.99 (roughly US$8.00) per month or approximately $96.00 per year, less 15% if you pay annually, or $81.60 if you cn live with 1 GB of storage. But that's not quite the same thing, is it? I've changed the tag line. Charles *** Charles W. Moore Note: Letters to Moore's Mailbag may or may not be published at the editor's discretion.
