iPhone AC Adapter Failure: Possible Fixes

iphoneatlas.com says:

As reported by several users and a post at the Apple Core by Jason O’Grady, some iPhone AC adapters are apparently suddenly failing to deliver a charge, forcing users to connect their iPhones via USB to their computers in order to properly charge....

If you are experiencing a similar issue, you may want to first try resetting your iPhone by pressing and hold the Sleep/Wake button (on the top right of the unit) and the Home button (circular button on the iPhone’s face) simultaneously for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. After doing so, reconnect it to AC power and check for a charge.

Make the iPhone a Music and Multimedia Controller Instrument, via Max/MSP/Jitter

createdigitalmusic.com's Peter Kirn reports:

The day the iPhone was announced at Macworld, some of us immediately wanted to use it as a simple multi-touch controller for music. It’s no substitute for a dedicated, large, expressive multi-touch controller like the JazzMutant Lemur. But it’s also far less expensive, useful as a phone/Internet device/media player, and could easily be a simple, multi-touch controller. Basic multi-touch gestures could be a powerful tool for controlling music. Then, the sad news came that development wasn’t going to be open. Hearts sank.

Good news: Masayuki Akamatsu, the brilliant Max/MSP developer who first bridged the popular modular audio and multimedia environment to the Wii remote (see aka.wiiremote), is on the case. It’s still early in development, and for now is an extremely simple implementation: it only routes buttons and text on a Safari webpage to a Max/MSP patch. What’s cool is that it uses the OpenSoundControl (OSC) protocol to do it (with PHP on the Web end), and it works (you can even use it now if you’ve got an iPhone):

Let’s talk about what this is not: .....

iPhone: Everyone Wants It, But Not Everyone Wants to Be First

Newsweek reports:

Know how to spot an optimist? You might look for someone carrying an iPhone. Only a month has passed since Apple's launch of its first cell phone. But since then, the gadget - which costs $499 to $599 and includes a digital music player and a Wi-Fi Internet terminal - has been nitpicked by Monday-morning quarterbacks, cracked open by hackers and fallen short of some investors' expectations. First were complaints about the phone's shorter-than-expected battery life and problems activating service with AT&T, the exclusive carrier. (AT&T said only a small percentage of customers encountered problems.) Then hackers revealed security vulnerabilities in the iPhone's e-mail function and figured out how to get around paying AT&T for the use of certain features.

iPhone: Kissing The Laptop And Desktop Goodbye

tech.blorge.com's Triston McIntyre says:

It Is Clear At This Point That Apple's Iphone Has Truly Paved The Way Towards A New Era In Smartphone Technology, But Is The Iphone's Potential Relatively Untapped? Could Ultra-portable Computing Solutions Make Desktops And Even Laptops Obsolete?

Andrew Melcher, Writer For Seeking Alpha, Recently Interviewed An Apple Store Employee On The Potential Of The Iphone. Though, True To Form, The Apple Worker Was Gung-ho About The Iphone's Potential, The Interview Hints That The Iphone's Current Image And Success Are Only A Shadow Of The Truly Titanic Potential The Iphone Posesses.

When Questioned About The Iphone, The Clerk Assertively Responded That He Felt The Iphone Could Soon Be A Replacement Device For The Television And Computers In Every Way.

Pipe Dreams? - Probably…But Maybe Not.

iPhone Battery Lawsuit: What Did Steve Jobs Say, and When Did He Say It?

Business 2.0's Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports:

The lawsuit filed against Apple (AAPL) and AT&T (T) by a user named Jose Trujillo has generated a lot of heated discussion here and elsewhere, much of it aimed at lawyers and their litigious clients.

Leaving aside the lawyer jokes (we've heard 'em all), there seems to be some confusion about the facts of the case, which centers on whether or not Apple informed purchasers ahead of time that the iPhone's battery was sealed and would need to be professionally replaced after a fixed number of charges - leaving the owner without a cell phone in the interim.

The lawsuit claims that this information did not appear in the product's packaging and never came up in Apple's promotion or marketing of the device. (link) A group called the Foundation for Consumer and Taxpayer Rights made a similar complaint about a week after the iPhone went on sale.

At the risk of being called as a witness in the trial, this is what I've learned about what Steve Jobs and Apple said about the battery issue and when they said it....

Apple Sued Over iPhone Battery

Ars Technica's Charles Jade reports:

Just about every new product in consumer electronics is going to have a problem or two, and there may also be technical issues too. In this potential court case, Apple's problem is one, Jose Trujillo, who is suing Apple and seeking class-action status in a lawsuit over the iPhone. It turns out Apple "marketed it's [sic] iPhone as a 'revolutionary new mobile phone' that incorporates 'high technology'," whatever that means. Besides that, most of the substantive allegations focus on the iPhone battery, including:

• Unknown to the Plaintiff, and undisclosed to the public, prior to purchase, the iPhone is a sealed unit with it's [sic] battery soldered on the inside of the device so that it cannot be changed by the owner.
• The battery enclosed in the iPhone can only be charged approximately 300 times before it will be in need of replacement, necessitating a new battery annually for owners of the iPhone.

Only 'Major' EU Countries To Be In Second Iphone Rollout

The Register's James Sherwood reports:

Apple will unleash its iPhone into the European market during the fourth quarter of 2007. But, it seems not all European consumers will be granted access to the so-called must-have gadget this side of Christmas.

The handset, which launched in the US on 29 June, will initially appear in a few "major" European countries, but the company hasn’t named which countries these will be, leaving lusting customers to simply guess over when and where it will first appear.

iPhone Customer Files Class-action Lawsuit Against Apple

dailytech.com's Brandon Hill reports:

The iPhone has been parading through news headlines ever since its early January unveil at MacWorld 2007. When the bulk of the tech press was roaming around Las Vegas totally underwhelmed by the Consumer Electronics Show, Apple was spilling the beans on a product that had been long rumored.

During its unveil, Apple went over the bulk of the iPhone's features and reporters were quick to point out its deficiencies. A few minuses that were harped upon with regards to the iPhone included its lack of a physical keyboard and its sealed battery.

The lack of a physical keyboard has been overcome by many iPhones users who have become accustomed to the on-screen alternative, but many still harp on the lack of a user-replaceable battery....

One iPhone customer wasn't happy at all with the iPhone's battery life or the two alternatives to replacing a defective battery and filed a class-action lawsuit against Apple as a result. In the suit....
