ZeboPhoto/ZeboPhoto X 1.9.1 Mac Image Viewer And Editor

882
ZeboPhoto is a Mac image viewer and slideshow application that also features some image editing functions. The slideshow function displays pictures without borders, and provides access to your photos individually with its file browser.

Captioned full screen or multiple picture slide shows are available as well as a movie maker, print layout templates, even a word processor.

ZeboPhoto's File Browser gives you easy access to all the image and text data you have on your computer. The browser navigates the disks on your computer using a column browser similar to that in the OS X Finder. Information pertaining to each file appears in the browser when you select it. You can also delete a selected file or move it to the trash.

Image files display a preview picture in the resizable browser window. A single click on this preview opens the image in it's own window allowing you apply a variety of editing effects to your picture. Images, documents and movie files can also be opened directly from the File menu.

On the bottom left of the browser is the File Visibility button. You can press this button to open access visibility controls allowing you to view hidden files on your computer in the file browser. You can also make your own files invisible/visible here for privacy. Not the most useful feature in a slideshow application, but it seems to work fine.

Speaking of ZeboPhoto's slide show capabilities, slide shows can be launched directly from the browser by double clicking on a folder or image while the slide show checkbox is selected. Multiple image slide shows are available with options to view two, four or six images on the screen at a time as well as Full Screen, Actual Size and Size To Fit shows.

Full Screen, Actual Size and Size To Fit slide shows have a contextual menu accessible by Control clicking on the current slide which gives you access to a variety of commands allowing you to rotate and flip images during the show as well as the ability to navigate quickly through a large file or switch to a different type of show.

While using the Full Screen, Actual Size and Size To Fit slide shows many functions are available during the show such as zooming in or out on an image, rotation, mirroring, file deletion and quickly navigating through large directories. These commands are all accessible by using hot keys. Click on the following link for a printable list of Keyboard Shortcuts.

Also accessible from the file browser are resizable Catalog View windows, a feature designed to allow you to quickly preview large folders of photos. The Catalog View window can be configured to view 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 20 images at a time.

Catalog View allows you to preview images contained in a folder or flip through the directory viewing multiple pictures at a time. Catalog View is available in either window (default) or full screen mode and permits you to directly enter a slide show with a single click on the image with which you wish to start the show. Use the Right and Left Arrow keys to flip through a directory when Catalog View window is to the front. Click once on an image to start a slide show with that image as the first in the show. The default value for the number of images you wish to view on a page can be set in the Preferences window, click on the Catalog View tab and choose from the “Previews per page: pop-up menu. Hold down the Control key and Click on the window to reveal a contextual menu which allows you to adjust the number of images you view at one time, changing this setting does not reset the default value set in the Preferences window.

Screen Captures to TIFF, JPEG, and PDF, format as well as to the Clipboard are also available and accessible from the Edit menu. This feature is only available in Mac OS X 10.2 or higher as it takes advantage of features added in Jaguar. Choose Edit->Screen Capture... to open the Screen Capture Window. Choose a capture setting from the pop-up menu, then push the Capture button. You will be presented with a Save As dialog box. Enter a filename and click on the Save button.

If you choose any of the interactive settings from the Screen Capture dialog, you can toggle between a large camera cursor and the cross hairs cursor you may already be familiar with by pressing the space bar. The camera cursor automatically selects whatever window or item it is positioned over and when you click your mouse it captures the selection. If you chose Interactive use the Cross-Hair Cursor to select the area you want to capture, let up on the mouse to perform the capture. With the window setting you just move the camera cursor over the window you wish to select and click the mouse to perform the capture. Your captured image will be saved to the Desktop.

When saving a Screen Capture in JPEG format, it will have the ZeboPhoto proprietary extension .zpg. In order to then open that JPEG in another application, it will be necessary to resave the image by choosing File->Save As->JPEG... (or whatever format you wish) after reopening the image in ZeboPhoto. When saving a Screen Capture in TIFF format it will have the extension .zif. In order to then open that TIFF in another application, it will be necessary to resave the image by choosing File->Save As->TIFF... (or whatever format you wish) after re-opening the image in ZeboPhoto.

Another ZeboPhoto feature is Print Layout window, which boasts 27 different layouts in which to print your images. These different settings range from 1 to 20 images per page and include oval, rectangular, and rounded rectangular shapes available with or without a vignette effect.

A movie player that toggles in and out of full screen mode by pressing the Space bar and a movie maker, which creates movies from you images, are also included in ZeboPhoto.

A basic word processor included with ZeboPhoto, which can be useful for saving text clippings quickly in a styled text format. Just drag any TEXT clipping onto the ZeboPhoto icon or into a Words or Image window and it will open in a Words window where you can then easily save it in text format.

All image windows have drag and drop capabilities. Drag any text clipping onto the ZeboPhoto icon or into a Words or Image window and it will open in a Words window where you can then easily save it in text format. Similarly PICT Clippings can be dragged onto the ZeboPhoto icon or onto any image window and will be opened in their own image window, to be converted into your favorite format.

To crop an image, hold down the Option key or press the Crop button in the Toolbar, click on a picture and drag to select an area to be cropped. Click on the selected area to perform the crop or select Image->Crop. Click outside the selected area to deselect it. For Constrained Cropping, choose Image->Constrained Crop-> and pick from a variety of pre-set cropping ratios.

The first 9 choices will crop your images at the actual size you select and at the ratio you choose. The ratios available are: Square, 2:3 Portrait, 2:3 Landscape, 3.5:5 Portrait, 3.5:5 Landscape, 4:5 Portrait, 4:5 Landscape, 5:7 Portrait and 5:7 Landscape. There are 12 more pre-set crops below the first 9, which will crop your image at the selected ratio and size it at the same time to the selected size. The preset crop and size options are: 2 x 3.5 Business Card Sized, 3.5 x 5 Portrait Sized, 3.5 x 5 Landscape Sized, 4 x 3 Portrait Sized, 4 x 3 DVD Sized, 4 x 6 Portrait Sized, 4 x 6 Landscape Sized, 5 x 7 Portrait Sized, 5 x 7 Landscape Sized, 8 x 10 Portrait Sized, 8 x 10 Landscape Sized and Desktop Picture.

Zebophoto includes various graphic effects such as posterizing, lightening/darkening, blurring, sharpening, rotation, tinting, inversion, and color adjustment. Also included are tools for image sizing, conversion, framing, and cropping. It's not Photoshop, but they actually work quite well.

Zebophoto allows you to add captions to all your pictures. This is especially nice when sending slide shows to friends and relatives.

New With Zebophoto 2.0.1:

  • The find/replace window has been rewritten and spell check has been added to Note Pad.

  • Composite windows no longer refresh themselves improperly when moved to the background as the result of new window creation on Leopard.

  • Print Layout now opens properly using the button on the File Browser.

  • A possible crash in the Movie Maker function on Leopard has been fixed.

  • Sound tracks now play properly in movies made with the Movie Maker.

This is a very nice little program. If you're looking for a Swiss Army knife type of slideshow program, check this one out.
