Maria Langer - Ten Dashboard Widgets I Can’t Live Without

Maria Langer says:

What’s on my Mac.

I have thoroughly embraced the Dashboard widget feature Apple introduced in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. And while I don’t have time to keep up with the dozens of new widgets that are released each week, I have managed to pick up a few favorites.

Among them are a bunch I use daily. They’re the ones that are set up and ready to go so that when I press the F12 key, they’re onscreen, providing me with the information I want or waiting for me to type in a request.

Here’s my list of widgets I can’t live without. Some of them might surprise you.

WordGuise 4.0.4 Universal

WordGuise is a REALbasic plugin that defines a text editor widget for windows and macintosh. It is also an RTF control, supporting most if not all of the gadgets an RTF document provides and it allows embedding of picture objects in the text. The WordGuise widget also provides support for Waste documents, because it sits on top of the well known Waste library. On windows wordguise exploits RichEdit and implements interfaces allowing picture embedding.

The WordGuise class inherits from a WordGuiseContainer control. The plugin allows creation of a WordGuise instance in code (on-the-fly), in addition to a default RB behavior, i.e., WordGuise is a typical control. An instance can be created by dragging the WordGuiseContainer on the window and then setting the super to WordGuise. Embedding can be done in a window, a panel or a RectControl of your choice. WordGuise can also be modified to act as a StaticText field, while you can set it to have focus, enable drag and drop or select its caption. WordGuise on the Mac can be extended to WordGuiseEx. This will allow usage of the new Waste 3.0 engine in MacOSX/Mach-O. When using WordGuiseEx, make sure to remove WordGuise plugin from the Plugins folder at the root of the REALbasic application, and vice versa, when using WordGuise do not put WordGuiseEx in the Plugins folder. WordGuiseEx has a different dylib (Mach-O) but otherwise is identical to WordGuise when it comes to MacOS PEF (OSX,classic) and Windows. Note that the WordGuise package comes with sample projects, while the WordGuiseEx package only contains the plugin. Further, if you purchase WordGuiseEx, you will need a license for WordGuise (which also includes all other plugins listed on this site) as well.

New in version 4.0.4:
• [Fix] All: WordGuise_in_a_ContainerControl is correctly aligned. It is possible that nested ContainerControls will show erronous WordGuise behavior.
• [Fix] All: Mouse responsiveness and proper coordinate reporting is accomplished by "disabeling" the setting of the "HIG" property. On the Mac we set it always to true, and on Windows we set it always to false. This is a platform dependent issue, related to embedding the various widgets (scrollbars, ruler) in the WordGuise editfield (OS X) or compositing these widgets around the field (XP).
• [Fix} Windows: Compositing widgets around the WordGuise editfield ensured a more consistent behavior. Triple-clicking is honored.
• [Fix] Windows: Sluggishness of mouse input has been corrected. Single, double and triple clicking work responsively, and dragging selected text is instantaneously.
• [Fix] Mac: Resizing the widget does not do erratic jittery text positioning anymore.
• [Issue] Windows: Drag 'n Drop isn't working properly. In a CC the outlining rectangle is drawn at the wrong place, and the selected text becomes non-selected when starting the drag. Unselection occurs with WG's wherever they live. In addition, the dragItem does contain the selected text, while dropping the dragItem at a different position in the text does not insert the text.
• [New] Sample Project: A wordGuiseContainer living in a ContainerControl, embedded on a PagePanel. It shows how to hide and show the CC. Note that REALbasic internally likes to handle the visibility of controls in a CC, but often can fail. This sample shows one way to do it right.
• [Fix] Mac OS: A WorguiseObject placed at the beginning of the text (offset = 0) will adequately return to the user as a valid object when WordGuise.GetObject[0] is called.
• [Fix] Win: To replace text with a nil string using a WordGuiseStreamItem of which its textfield is set to the empty string, will not throw an "inproper protocol error" exception.
• [Improvements] All: As noted earlier, the positioning of the widgets that make the WordGuise have led to numerous fixes and improvements under the hood. As a result some bugs may have been created for both platforms and some existing bugs might not have been addressed.

System requirements:
REALbasic 5.5 or later.

Mt. St. Helens VolcanoCam Widget 2.3

More than just a simple webcam, this widget displays a half-size static image from the Mount St. Helens Volcanocam, as well as the current volcano Alert Level as assigned by the US Geological Survey. The Alert Level is not available on the volcanocam site, but the widget displays both the image and the Alert Level in a single, easy to access place. The VolcanoCam image and the Alert Level automatically updates approximately every five minutes.

As always, the Volcanocam button below the image will take you to the official website in your default web browser. In the same way, the Alert Level button takes you to the USGS site for an explanation of the Alert Level.

New since version 2.1 is automatic version checking. If a newer version has been released, the Volcanocam button will change colors and caption to let you know. In that case the button will take you to this site instead of the Volcanocam site.

The current version is 2.3, please download the latest version if your current version is older.

New in version 2.3:
• New version now uses the new High Definition webcam.

System requirements:
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.
