With sites like Facebook in its crosshairs, FH 2.0 LLC has unveiled Schoolfizz.com, a social news site for students that places an emphasis on open communication. Targeted to universities and high schools, Schoolfizz allows students to share news and stories they deem interesting. However, unlike sites like Facebook, where access to information is limited to a circle of friends, Schoolfizz provides an open network that allows stories to be shared locally within an entire school or nationally across multiple schools.
"The goal for Schoolfizz is to provide an open channel for communication where all students can participate in the discussion," said founder Dennis Bailey. "With many of the social networking sites like Facebook and Classmates, the sharing of information is restricted to exclusive groups of students. We want to get away from encouraging a country club mentality. We feel there are enough ties between students within a single school or among students at the national level to warrant an open network. We've already seen Facebook slowly moving in this direction and we expect other sites to follow suit."
Content for Schoolfizz is generated by students who can submit stories or create content of their choosing. Other students vote on the submissions and the most popular stories within a school and across all schools rise to the top. There are no limits on who can view a story and there are no requirements during sign up to have an email from a particular school as many other sites require.
As a part of its initial launch, Schoolfizz is being rolled out to a number of universities in the United States. The site is also exploring content sharing relationships with student papers and expects to announce a number of partnerships in the near future.
