Apple Creates New iPod Division, Shuffles Execs

Reuters reports:

"Apple Computer Inc. has created a new division within the maker of the Macintosh computer to sell its popular iPod, the market leading digital music player, the company said on Wednesday.

"Jon Rubinstein, who has led the Cupertino, California-based company's hardware engineering efforts, will run the new division, an Apple spokesman said.

"Timothy Cook, head of Apple's worldwide sales and operations, will lead a newly organized Macintosh division, Apple said. Tim Bucher, now in charge of Macintosh system development, will head up the Mac's hardware engineering."

Apple's iPod Gets Its Own Product Development Team

IDG News Service's Tom Krazit reports:

"Apple Computer Inc. has created two product development teams organized around its most prominent products, the Macintosh computer and the iPod music player, a company spokesman confirmed Thursday.....

"The iPod has reinvigorated Apple and its bottom line in the past year. The company shipped more iPods in the first quarter than it did Macs, according to Apple's first-quarter results."

Fragmentation in HFS Plus Volumes Tutorial

Amit Singh has posted a tutorial on the sometimes controversial topic of disk fragmentation.

"Fragmentation in filesystems has traditionally been an important factor affecting performance negatively. Modern filesystems are usually less prone to fragmentation than their ancestors. Numerous algorithms and schemes have been incorporated into filesystems to reduce fragmentation, and in some cases, even undo existing fragmentation. Nevertheless, fragmentation is still a cause for concern for those who design and implement filesystems, as well as for end users.

The purpose of this discussion is to:
• Introduce hfsdebug, a tool for exploring internals of HFS+ volumes.
• Describe a procedure for quantifying fragmentation in HFS+ volumes, and list the results of applying this procedure to a few volumes.....

"....HFS+ uses delayed allocation: rather than allocating blocks as a file is written in memory, the filesystem can reserve (or loan) blocks, delaying actual allocation until the buffer cache is flushed to disk. Thus, several small allocations can be combined into larger, possibly contiguous, allocations.

"While Apple does not provide a defragmentation tool, they introduced a few HFS+ optimizations in 'Panther', two of which play important roles in countering (even undoing) the fragmentation of files that are below a certain size, and are frequently accessed.....

"As we have seen, an HFS+ volume seems to resist fragmentation rather well on Mac OS X 10.3.x, and I don't envision fragmentation to be a problem bad enough to require proactive remedies (such as a defragmenting tool).

"Defragmentation on HFS+ volumes should not be necessary at all, or worthwhile, in most cases, because the system seems to do a very good job of avoiding/countering fragmentation.....In some cases, you could make the situation worse by defragmenting."

Minimo (Mini Mozilla) Project Profiled

"Mozilla, the browser, is arguably one of the best desktop browsers. Mozilla is used in many desktop applications: Netscape 7, CompuServe, AOL for Mac, Ximian GNOME, Galeon, and Nautilus. There also have been a few ports to make Mozilla run on various devices such as the Nokia Media Terminal and the AOL/Gateway. With the release of Minimo, a slimmed down version of Mozilla, we offer a minimalist browser that may be the best browser in the embedded space.....

Linux War Takes Ugly Turn

Macworld UK's Robert McMillan reports:

"'The nonprofit organization that created the software license that governs Linux says that it will not produce all of the material requested in a November subpoena it received from The SCO Group, as part of SCO's multi-billion dollar lawsuit against IBM.

"We are certain that we will not produce all the material requested,' wrote Bradley Kuhn, the executive director of the Free Software Foundation, (FSF) in a statement published Tuesday on the FSF's Web site. 'We will not betray our legally protected confidences, particularly when they relate to our work upholding the integrity of the GPL (GNU General Public License).'

Buying Frenzy On For Free, Not Yet Ready Gmail

The Canadian Press' Jen Horsey reports:

"What's one of Google's new, invitation-only e-mail accounts worth? A pet monkey, a postcard or a mixed tape, according to users posting to a new Internet site, gmailswap.com.

"Since the service hasn't even launched yet, it isn't easy to get an account with Gmail, the new web-based e-mail service being developed by the company that so revolutionized the Internet that its name has become a verb.

"But the new website allows would-be users to offer items in trade for one of the few thousand exclusive preview accounts that have been available to select invitees since early last month."

Anti-spam Buy Enhances Symantec's Security Plan

"Security software maker Symantec Corp. announced Wednesday it is acquiring anti-spam specialist Brightmail Inc. in a cash deal valued at about $370 million.

"Symantec said the acquisition will complement its security products. Unsolicited e-mail, which has long been a nuisance because of its volume, is a growing security problem as the messages increasingly carry computer viruses."
