iPod Aboard Trans Atlantic Rowing Adventure
Writing in The Times of London, Jonathan Gornall says:
"With luck, as you read this, I and my three shipmates are now off the east coast of Newfoundland in an extremely pink rowing boat.
"Between us and England lie 3,550 km of Atlantic Ocean. Travelling at three knots, while we won't exactly eat up the miles, we will steadily nibble away at them and, in about a million strokes and something under two months, we should be home in Britain.
"Our plan is simple, if not that cunning: to break the 55-day record for rowing the west-east Atlantic passage and to become the first crew successfully to conclude such a crossing on the shores of mainland Britain."
On passing the long hours at the oars:
"We can listen to music on Nike armband radio headphones, from a sealed iPod broadcasting on our very own ship's FM pirate radio station. One of my jobs has been to program the iPod with selections from each of the crew's (often shocking) CD collections. Let's hope I managed to record them all OK, eh?"

DVD Compatibility - Making Sense of DVD Devices & Formats on the Mac for the Beginner
Here is a great little tutorial on making sense of the confusing array of recordable DVD formats:
"It may seem confusing to decide among all of the DVD recording formats. One concern is that one format may become obsolete. The answer to that, for right now, is 'No.' As long as the recorded DVD plays in your DVD player, or your friend's DVD player, you have what you need. Right now, the only format to be cautious with is DVD-RAM. While some companies are looking for ways to use this format more effectively, it is least compatible with consumer players and DVD-ROM drives. You can check the console log, via System Profile, to monitor your burn..."

Sony Walkman Takes On iPod in Popularity Contest
NewsFactor's Erika Morphy reports:
"Sony announced plans this week to introduce a hard-disk drive-based digital music player under the Walkman brand -- making it the latest vendor to go after Apple's formidable iPod market share and, Sony hopes, deflate its cult status.
"The Network Walkman NW-HD1 has a 20-GB hard disk drive and is the smallest form-factor music player at this capacity, according to Sony. The Walkman, lest we forget -- and Sony is making sure no one does -- emerged on the scene 25 years ago.
"The Network Walkman measures 89 millimeters by 62.1 millimeters by 13.8 millimeters and weighs 110 grams. The capacity is half that of the highest-capacity iPod, but Sony claims that its new player beats iPod in terms of the number of songs it can store: 13,000 on the Walkman versus 10,000 on the iPod. Sony also says the device has a longer battery life than the iPod.
"But how does its cool factor stack up?....."

Mozilla Feeds on Rival's Woes
Wired's Michelle Delio reports:
"Hackers have long insisted that steering clear of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser is one of the easiest ways to protect computers from many of the security threats that lurk on the Internet.
"That suggestion is often greeted with apathy or angry accusations that the geek in question was indulging in Microsoft-bashing -- admittedly a not-uncommon activity in hacker circles.
"But last Friday, in response to the latest security exploit involving Microsoft products, the usually staid U.S. government's Computer Emergency Readiness Team, or US-CERT, published a warning strongly suggesting that users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer should switch to another Web browser, due to "significant vulnerabilities" in technologies included in IE.....
"....many evidently took CERT's warning to heart and downloaded Mozilla or Mozilla's Firefox, free, open-source Web browsers developed and distributed by the Mozilla Organization, who resurrected the remnants of Netscape after it was purchased by AOL in 1999.
"Downloads of Mozilla and Firefox -- an advanced version of Mozilla -- spiked the day CERT's warning was released.... downloads of the browsers hit an all-time high on Thursday, from the usual 100,000 or so downloads on a normal day to more than 200,000."

HP issues apocalyptic Netscape HP-UX warning

Apple's New iMac Delayed
The Wall Street Journal's Pui-Wing Tam reports:
"Apple Computer Inc. said a new version of its flagship iMac desktop computer won't be ready until September, two months later than planned and well after it expects to run out of current models....
"The delay is another problem for Apple's computer division, which steadily has been losing market share. Apple sold just 1.7% of the world's personal computers in the first quarter, down from 2% in the first quarter of 2001, according to market researcher Gartner Inc.
"The most recent version of iMac made the cover of Time magazine when it was unveiled in January 2002, but sales have been slowing in recent quarters. In the first quarter of this year, Apple shipped 217,000 iMacs, down 15% from 256,000 units in the same quarter a year earlier."

Apple Shares Sour On iMac Delay
Reuters reports:
"Shares of Apple Computer Inc. fell 6 percent Friday, a day after the computer maker said it would delay the introduction of its next iMac computer until the very end of the crucial back-to-school sales season.
"Apple said its next iMac desktop computer won't ship until September, instead of in the coming weeks as originally planned.
"The Cupertino, California-based company has been emphasizing other computer lines for the education market -- such as its iBook notebook PC and eMac desktop computer -- which analysts said could help it avoid a shortfall."

Gmailers Banned From Selling Addresses
CNET News.com's Stefanie Olsen reports:
"Google has altered its Gmail membership policy to stop people making money from the sale of popular email addresses
"Google changed its Gmail membership policy this week to prevent people from profiting from the sale of popular email names.
"According to Google's new policy, altered on Monday, the Web search company prohibits Gmail subscribers from selling, trading or transferring the free email accounts 'for any unauthorised commercial purpose.' It also bars people from setting up multiple accounts in violation of the policy."

eWeek: Apple: New iMac in the Works
"Apple Computer Inc. has confirmed that the iMac is to be replaced in September with an entirely new model. With few of the iMac models still on the shelves of distributors and dealers, the company faces two months with no mainstream consumer computer available.
In a statement, Apple confirmed it had stopped taking orders for the iMac on its online store. "We planned to have our next-generation iMac ready by the time the inventory of current iMacs runs out in the next few weeks, but our planning was obviously less than perfect," it said."

PC Mag: HDTV Wonder
"Solid hardware and good software come together to create a good first-generation over-the-air HDTV offering. The price includes both a remote and an antenna, not to mention ATI's suite of multimedia applications. Some rough edges still need to be sanded, but overall, HDTV Wonder is a great place to get your HD party started."
