How Far Can Web Apps Take the iPhone?

PC World's Ryan Naraine says:

What if Dell released a new computer with nothing but a Web browser on it? Well, as slick as the iPhone is, if it's missing an application you need - instant messaging, for example - a tiny PC with a browser is really all you have. But as today's explosion of Web-based applications demonstrates, you can do a lot with just a Web browser.

Eager developers are already creating new Web-based applications for the iPhone..., and high-profile sites like Facebook and Netvibes have gone a long way toward making themselves more iPhone friendly. But questions remain about how much the iPhone's current incarnation can really do and what that means for the future of mobile computing.

Citing security and reliability concerns, Apple opted against releasing a software development kit, or SDK, to allow the creation of native iPhone programs. Instead, Apple provided hooks to let developers access many of the iPhone's basic functions, such as sending e-mail, dialing a phone number, or tying into the embedded Google Maps through Apple's Safari browser. Ideally, developers would use those capabilities to build Web sites and apps that behave just as native iPhone programs do.

So how is the effort going so far?....

MAME Hits iPhone. Slowly

Wired's Rob Beschizza reports:

MAME, the arcade game rerunner that anchors any platform's emulation selection, has made it to Apple's iPhone. The port, of the SDL version, is too slow to run anything more complicated than Pac-Man or Q*Bert well, but it's a start - and evidence that a native edition tailored to the handset's hardware will likely be reasonably zippy.

Japanese Want The iPhone, But Japan Has Own Cool Stuff

USA Today's Paul Wiseman reports:

Apple's iPhone won't arrive in Japan until next year, but Japanese gadget lovers have other options. The country is known for having some of the most sophisticated cellphones in the world. How they stack up:

Japan already has the funkiest cellphones in the world: More than their U.S. counterparts, Japanese consumers use mobile phones to watch TV, pay bills, order concert tickets, read manga (comics) and summon help from global-positioning satellites to figure out where they are.

But market analysis suggests there's still a niche in Japan for Apple's iPhone. Japanese gadget geeks — and cellphone service providers — are intrigued by the iPhone's sleek design and touch-screen display. "This is the first phone that thrilled me," freelance journalist Tsutsumu Ishikawa says. "People regard it as cool and advanced. And the interface is easy to use."

Apple won't introduce the iPhone in Japan until next year.

Speculating On The iPhone Memory Footprint And CPU Speed

Ars Technica's Jeff Smykil reports:

The iPhone Tech Spec page gives us a decent amount of information. From the page, the usual information is listed: dimensions, display size, capacity, battery life, and even environmental requirements. Apple even gets into some of the finer details, including the operating system, data rates, frequency response, and supported video bit-rates.

There are a few statistics missing from the page that some among us long for—we like the gory hardware details. Craig Hockenberry of Iconfactory has done some digging and has some answers for us. First the processor.

Updating and restoring iPhone software

A new Apple Knowledge Base article says:

You can use iTunes to update or restore iPhone software. You should always update iPhone to use the latest software. You can also restore the software, which puts iPhone back to its factory condition.

If you choose to update, the iPhone software is updated but your settings and media are not affected.

If you choose to restore, all data is erased from iPhone, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All iPhone settings are restored to their factory condition.

Analyst: iPhone Sales May Bust Targets

ZNet reports:

Apple may sell more than 800,000 iPhones in the current quarter, UBS said in a research note on Tuesday. That suggested the company would easily top its own target of some 730,000.

"Our checks continue to indicate solid demand for the iPhone despite typical moderation in excitement from launch and extremely high expectations," analyst Ben Reitzes wrote.
