iPhone Thumb Trim Hoax Gets Online Media Buy-in
The Register's Bill Ray reports:
Claims that Thomas Martel, 28, of Bonnie Brae had his over-sized thumbs "whittled" to make using his iPhone easier have turned out to be a marvellous hoax perpetrated by the North Denver News, though one that fooled many online news sources.
Despite the story being littered with clues - references to muscle alterations in the thumb, despite there being no muscles in the tip, and the fact that such surgery would take longer than the iPhone has been around - it hasn't stopped speculation on the motives and stupidity of the fictional Mr Martel, and widespread reporting of the story.

iPhone Changes the Telecom Game
Seeking Alpha's Paul Carton reports:
Jim Woods (ChangeWave Alliance) submits: With the multi-function iPhone, Steve Jobs and company have introduced a product that gives their competitors heartburn.
According to ChangeWave's July consumer cell phone survey -- completed less than four weeks after the iPhone's much-ballyhooed release -- Apple's newest electronic device is changing the game in the telecom industry.
A total of 3,003 members of the ChangeWave Alliance participated in the survey, which points to an upheaval occurring among cell phone manufacturers and service providers alike.

Apple iPhone takes on Sony, Nintendo?
Macworld UK's Jonny Evans reports:
Apple is secretly preparing to push its iPhone as a gaming platform, taking on the likes of Sony, Nintendo and Nokia in one move, a report suggests.
The New York Post claims Apple has been quietly developing iPhone to support games, "secretly plotting" ways to transform it into a mobile gaming machine.

iPhone As Video Conferencing Tool?
InformationWeek's Eric Zeman reports:
Two Mac-hacking brothers set out to create an application for this year's C-4 Developer Conference Iron Coder competition. What did they come up with? A video conferencing program for the iPhone.
Ken and Greg Aspeslagh apparently specialize in doing fun and interesting things with cameras, and both happen to be Mac fiends, as well. Since this year's Iron Coder competition centered on the iPhone, they set out to capitalize on its camera. (For those of you puzzled by how the Aspeslagh's get around the iPhone's lack of two cameras, I'll get to that in a minute.)
