The iPhone Matches Most of Its Hype - David Pogue

The New York Times' David Pogue says:

Talk about hype. In the last six months, Apple's iPhone has been the subject of 11,000 print articles, and it turns up about 69 million hits on Google. Cultists are camping out in front of Apple stores; bloggers call it the "Jesus phone." All of this before a single consumer has even touched the thing.

So how is it?

As it turns out, much of the hype and some of the criticisms are justified. The iPhone is revolutionary; it's flawed. It's substance; it's style. It does things no phone has ever done before; it lacks features found even on the most basic phones.

Testing Out the iPhone

The WallStreet Journal's Walter S. Mossberg And Katherine Boehret report:

One of the most important trends in personal technology over the past few years has been the evolution of the humble cellphone into a true handheld computer, a device able to replicate many of the key functions of a laptop. But most of these "smart phones" have had lousy software, confusing user interfaces and clumsy music, video and photo playback. And their designers have struggled to balance screen size, keyboard usability and battery life.

Now, Apple Inc., whose digital products are hailed for their design and innovation, is jumping into this smart-phone market with the iPhone, which goes on sale in a few days after months of the most frenzied hype and speculation we have ever seen for a single technology product. Even though the phone's minimum price is a hefty $499, people are already lining up outside Apple stores to be among the first to snag one when they go on sale Friday evening.

We have been testing the iPhone for two weeks, in multiple usage scenarios, in cities across the country. Our verdict is that, despite some flaws and feature omissions, the iPhone is, on balance, a beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer. Its software, especially, sets a new bar for the smart-phone industry, and its clever finger-touch interface, which dispenses with a stylus and most buttons, works well, though it sometimes adds steps to common functions.

iPhone Preview: All You Need to Know and Then Some

PBCentral'a Noah Kravitz says:

It may or may not be looked back upon as "the turning point" when the Late Steve Jobs-era portion of Apple's history is written. It may or may not be the biggest consumer product launch in the history of consumers and products. It may or may not be the most overhyped piece of gadgetry ever, even by Apple's own impressive standards. One thing's for sure, however: This Friday June 29 at 6 PM local time, the Apple iPhone will go on sale at Apple and AT&T stores nationwide, and online via the Apple Store.

Will it be worth the hype, price tag, and inevtiably long lines? By way of an answer, some facts and analysis follows ... and then it's up to you to decide for yourself. For me personally, the answer is No - at least until an unlocked model with widescreen keyboard mode surfaces. But I'm still hoping to get a review loaner to play with awhile.

Google Chief Hints At Additional iPhone Tools

ITPro's Simon Aughton reports:

Search giant Google plans to beef up its relationship with Apple by collaborating on further services for the iPhone, the company's chief executive and Apple board member Eric Schmidt hinted this week.

Speaking at a Google event in Paris, Schmidt said that the "powerful" iPhone - which he then showed to the audience - is particularly suited to Google applications. The iPhone will include a custom version of Google Maps when it launches next week.

The opportunities for Google were boosted by Apple's decision to use Ajax programming technologies for the iPhone. Google is the leading provider of Ajax-powered Web 2.0 applications - a large part of its business is based on this technology - and should have little difficulty in adapting these for the iPhone screen.

At Last, the iPhone

Newsweek's Steven Levy says:

A couple of weeks ago I went to Pittsburgh for what I thought would be a day trip. Since I was headed back that evening, I didn't take my laptop, but because of thunderstorms across the Eastern Seaboard, my sojourn turned into an overnight stay. So I had an opportunity to give a good workout to something I had received the previous day - a review unit of Apple's eagerly awaited (boy, that's an understatement) iPhone.

iPhone Hysteria Reaches Epic Proportions

CTV.ca's Phil Hahn reports:

If you've been living under a rock, or nobly suffering under the weight of your conch-sized, analog-era cellphone, you might not know the "Retail Rapture" is upon us. At 18:00 hours on Friday, June 29, the iPhone will descend upon the American masses (Canadians will have to wait a while longer).

Since its introduction in January, Apple has been hyping its combination cellphone, iPod and wireless Web device as something so revolutionary it will set the bar for smart gadgets that do it all, and do it in style.

And people are literally lining up to buy it. Braving 30-plus degree Celsius heat, New Yorkers have been camping outside the flagship Apple store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan since Monday.

"Line-Waiters" are offering their services on Craigslist for as much as $250 (that's half the cost of a 4-gigabyte model. An 8-Gig model costs US$599.)

Should You Buy an iPhone? - An IPhone Buyer's Guide: Look Before Leaping Onto Apple's Cell Phone Bandwagon

AP's Peter Svensson says:

The most eagerly awaited cell phone ever is upon us Friday. Should you resist the iPhone's breathless hype, or take the plunge?

Unless you're already standing in line outside an Apple or AT&T store, or are prepared to mug one of the first customers to come out after the 6 p.m. launch, the answer, at least for now, will have to be "let me think about it for a week or two."

"Unlocked" Apple iPhone could be in India soon

Thbe Business Standard's Priyanka Joshi says:

Apple Inc will launch its latest offering, the iPhone in the US tomorrow. Apart from functioning as a phone, the device can function as a media player and also as a wireless web surfing device.

Officially, it will not be available in India for at least another year.

But for those who really want it, the wait might be as short as a fortnight or, at the most, a month. This is not just because of efficiently smuggled shipments but a technical 'feat' as well.

A Memento Mori For Apple

AP's Peter Svensson says:

When a Roman general returned from a successful campaign and was rewarded with a triumphal parade through the city, a slave stood behind him on his chariot to whisper the words "Memento mori" in his ear.

The Latin phrase means "remember that you are mortal," and was intended to keep the general's pride manageable. With the launch of the tremendously hyped iPhone soon upon us, it may be worth reminding Apple Inc. and the buying public that not every product the company has put out has been as successful as say, Julius Caesar's conquest of France.

So here's a memento mori for Apple, listing some of its greatest misses....

PC Mag: Analysis: iPhone's Rate Plan Is Actually Pretty Good

"Apple and AT&T released details on their rate plans for the iPhone on Tuesday, and the service plans are on par with what you'd get with other phones - though you get fewer text messages for your money.

Apple's six individual plans and six family plans start at $59.99 for 450 minutes, plus unlimited data, 200 text messages, 5,000 night and weekend minutes, and unlimited mobile-to-mobile minutes."

PC Mag: Survey: Apple Fans - Not Music Fans - Will Buy iPhone

"According to a study released Monday, only a small percentage of U.S. users actually use music phones to play back music.

The study, generated by Jupiter Research, found that five percent of consumers "sideload," or shift songs from their PC to their phone. And only two percent of consumers download music from over-the-air services from carriers like AT&T, which will launch the Apple iPhone this week, to the phones themselves."

Apple's iPhone Gets Its First Reviews

newsfactor.com's Barry Levine reports:

It's iDay minus two and counting, with Apple's iPhone launching on Friday. The first iPhone reviews have arrived, with many reviewers calling it a "breakthrough" device while still noting the lack of some features and the drawbacks of its cellular capabilities.

The iPhone is "a beautiful and breakthrough handheld computer," wrote Walter Mossberg and Katherine Boehret on the Wall Street Journal's Web site. Its software "sets a new bar for the smartphone industry," they added, and its "clever finger-touch interface" works well, "though it sometimes adds steps to common functions."

Mossberg and Boehret went on to praise what they called "the best Web browser" they have seen on a smartphone and the largest and highest-resolution smartphone display.

AT&T Embrace of iPhone Threatens Sprint's Recovery

Bloomberg's Crayton Harrison reports:

Cary Fabrikant's devotion to Apple Inc. spells trouble for his cellular carrier, Sprint Nextel Corp.

Fabrikant, a Miami sports agent, plans to forfeit $200 and switch to AT&T Inc. to get an iPhone, Apple's blend of an iPod music player with a mobile phone, when it goes on sale June 29.

"If it's everything that's promised, I won't think twice about breaking my contract," said Fabrikant, visiting an Apple Store at a Los Angeles shopping mall this month. "It'll be way more consumer-friendly than anything else out there."

There may be thousands more like him. Armed with an exclusive deal to sell the $499 to $599 iPhone, AT&T, the largest U.S. wireless carrier, will lure more than 1.1 million customers from No. 3 Sprint by next year, Bear Stearns analyst Michael McCormack predicts. That could crush Sprint's promise to reverse three quarters
of subscriber declines and endanger a 15 percent jump in Sprint's shares this year.
