Apple to replace iPads In Need Of New Battery For $99
Appleinsider's Slash Lane reports:
Apple said this week that it will offer a Battery Replacement Service for its new iPad tablet that is similar to the one offered for iPhones and iPods, only this time the company plans to replace the entire device rather than swap out its depleted battery.

iCab Mobile 2: The Way Mobile Browsing Should Be
FairerPlatform says:
Mobile iCab is easily the best browser for the iPhone and iPod touch. Although some will be put off by the fact that this app isn't free, it is much faster and offers tons slick features not found Mobile Safari, making it worth every penny and then some.
Alexander Clauss' truly superb iCab Mobile 2.0 (iTunes, $1.99) was released earlier this month and, after spending time using and trying the many new features, I can once again wholeheartedly recommend this browser for the iPhone and iPod touch.

The iPad's (Pre-) Opening Day Sales: 120,000
Gizmodo's Dan Nosowitz says:
So, the iPad is finally available for pre-order, and it turns out the half of the Giz staff that bought one aren't alone: CNN estimates Apple received about 120,000 iPad pre-orders on that first day alone....
Purchasing was split almost exactly among the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models, although nearly 70% opted for the Wi-Fi-only mode.

Apple sells 50,000 iPads in two hours
Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports:
By one estimate, pre-orders were coming in Friday morning at the rate of 25,000 per hour
The folks who hang out at Investor Village's AAPL Sanity Board are too impatient to wait for Apple to announce sales figures; they much prefer to work them out on their own in real time....

Apple Dishes New IPad Details on 3G, IBooks, More
Macworld's Dan Moren reports:
The availability of pre-orders isn't the only new development in iPad-land. Apple also updated its site with a plethora of new details about its latest and greatest device, from information on the 3G networking capabilities to a more in-depth description of the iBooks application. Let's take a look at what caught our attention....

An IPhoneographer's Six Favorite Apps
Macworld's Heather Kelly reports:
There are 2,920 photography apps available in the App Store, and more are being added every day. Sorting through and testing each new release-every faux film filter, cropping, and tilt-shift tool-could amount to a full time job. Thankfully, Glyn Evans narrows it down for you on his site iPhoneography.com.

iPhone 4.0 to Integrate Multitasking this Summer?
Lifehacker's Adam Pash says:
Apple will include much-asked-for application multitasking functionality when they release the iPhone 4.0 update sometime this summer, according to all-things-Apple blog AppleInsider. Multitasking (more specifically, the ability to run third-party applications in the background) is one of those big pieces of functionality that separates the iPhone OS from Android...Fingers crossed that this one comes true.

Rumor: Multitasking coming to iPhone OS 4.0
CNET's Rick Broida says:
The Palm Pre does a nice job with multitasking, and a lot of people want the same for the iPhone.
"And it's about damn time!"
Sorry, that was just my excited utterance upon reading Thursday morning's AppleInsider story about iPhone OS 4.0. It cites "people with a proven track record" in claiming that multitasking will finally make its debut.

Open Source Community 'Hopelessly Confused' By Apple-HTC Suit
Appleinsider's Neil Hughes reports:
Analyst Charlie Wolf with Needham & Company said Friday he believes the open source community, which has backed Google's Android mobile operating system against the iPhone, has the wrong take on Apple's patent lawsuit against rival handset maker HTC.
Wolf, in a new note to investors, said the open source community is "hopelessly confused." He said the open source movement came from the academic community, where ideas are freely exchanged. But things don't work like that in the business world.

Dead iPad Battery? Never Mind Replacing It, Apple Just Sends Another iPad for $99
Engadget's Darren Murph says:
Whoa, Nelly! Isn't this something? Apple has just posted details on its iPad battery replacement service, which is really not a battery replacement service at all. Check out the company's opening line:
"If your iPad requires service due to the battery's diminished ability to hold an electrical charge, Apple will replace your iPad for a service fee."
Now, let's compare that to the verbiage found in the iPhone's battery replacement program details....

Roughly 10% of Microsoft Employees Said To Be iPhone Owners
Appleinsider's Sam Oliver reports:
Although it's no secret that members of Microsoft's leadership frown upon employees who choose an Apple iPhone over one running the company's own Windows Mobile operating system, approximately 1 in 10 still veer towards the forbidden fruit and sometimes go to great lengths to conceal them on the job.

A Battle for the Future Is Getting Personal
The New York Times' Brad Stone and Miguel Helft report:
IT looked like the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Three years ago, Eric E. Schmidt, the chief executive of Google, jogged onto a San Francisco stage to shake hands with Steven P. Jobs, Apple's co-founder, to help him unveil a transformational wonder gadget - the iPhone - before throngs of journalists and adoring fans at the annual MacWorld Expo.
Google and Apple had worked together to bring Google's search and mapping services to the iPhone, the executives told the audience, and Mr. Schmidt joked that the collaboration was so close that the two men should simply merge their companies and call them "AppleGoo."...
Today, such warmth is in short supply....
