Shiira 2.3 Web Browser Based On Web Kit Released

5129 Shiira is a web browser written in Cocoa. It uses the KHTML rendering engine provided by Apple's Web Kit. Since this is the same rendering engine used by Safari, HTML content rendered by Shiira will look the same as in Apple's own browser.

The Shiira Project is an attempt to development a web browser using Web Kit. All source codes used in this software are publicly available under the BSD license. We hope that our code will help other developers just starting out on their own Web Kit projects.

RSS support

Shiira supports RSS. Shiira can directly display the contents of RSS feeds, and scbscribe to them regularly.

When a web page you are browsing has a link to an RSS feed, Shiira displays the "RSS" button on the top right of the browser window.

If you add an RSS feed to your bookmarks folder, Shiira monitors it regularly. Updated RSS feeds appear in the RSS sidebar. Titles in bold style means that the articles are unread.

Also you can check the number of unread articles on the Dock icon, and bookmarks bar and menu. In addition, Shiira supports Growl notification for incoming articles.

Page holder

In the sidebar, Shiira supports what is called "Page holder", which basically displays anthor slim browsing area. This is useful whe you are browsing a website with a lot of links, for example, table of contents page.

New icon

This is the fourth icon for Shiira, designed by Niram+Nunca who is a member of Shiira team.

One of the most important features of Shiira is the sidebar. Many features are put in it. Shiira 1.2 adopts a vertical tab vuew for the sidebar, because the horizontal tabs we used in previous versions was not good enough to hold all of the features in the sidebar. In addition, you can change the order of tabs by dragging and dropping.

Universal Access Support

Shiira supports Universal Access.

Shiira 1.2 also implements a sound effect feature. For example, you can set Shiira to play a sound file when the page is loaded, and a different sound for when there is a page load error.

You can also choose whether to load images automatically, use smooth fonts, page transitions, URL tooltips, and more

Tab Exposé

The most impressive feature we have in Shiira is Tab Exposé. Tabbed browsing is useful, but you can't loog at all the open pages at once. Instead of showing tiny thumbnails on the side or over the tabs, Tab Exposé displays all open tabs the same way that Exposé shows all open windows.

Open All Links in Tabs

Shiira provides a quick way to open all links in page such as link pages or the update notice pages. First, highlight links, then, choose "Open All Links in Tabs" from the contextual menu.

Shiira can change browsing mode. You can choose from different modes: open a link in a new tab, open a link in a background tab, at etc. As of Shiira 1.1, we added a toolbar button to change this between these modes so that you can change browsing mode on the fly.

Private browsing

Safari 2.0 provides private browsing feature which enables to browse pages without any leaving any traces. Shiira also supports it, your browsing, download and searching history are not recorded whe private browsing is enabled.

Firefox bookmarks

Shiira has been supporting Safari bookmark integration that allows you to use Safari bookmarks without importing. Now it supports Firefox bookmarks, too. Firefox user can switch to Shiira without having to import/export bookmarks.
