Impression Cocoa-Based Backup Utility For Mac OS X
Impression is a straightforward, reliable backup application that can back up directories to (and restore them from) multiple optical discs (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW) or disk images on any mounted hard drive (i.e. - iPod, FireWire drive, Network server, etc.). It offers incremental/differential backup options, bookmark based backup management, compressed/encrypted disk image options and MD5 checksum validation for files to guarantee their integrity and your peace of mind.
The following list offers a general overview of Impression's features:
Full, incremental and differential backups.
Back up files and folders to reliable, open-standard hfspax archives or to plain, Finder-readable file archives.
Back up to CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW and disk images on any mounted hard disk (i.e. - iPod, FireWire drive, Newtork server, etc.)
Multi-session disc burning offers 'write until full' capabilities for supported optical disc formats to reduce disc waste when running multiple small or incremental backups.
Encrypt disk images with AES-128 disk encryption and keep your passwords stored safely in the OS X Keychain.
Compress disk images for local archive storage.
MD5 file checksum validation to ensure restoration accuracy.
Segment large files between two optical discs.
'Root' user runtime authority to avoid permissions issues.
Powerful grep-based regex filename pattern exclusion system.
Bookmarked session backup management system.
Preflight system to verify, check validity and estimate backup routines.
Preservation of all Macintosh HFS/HFS+ file meta-data.
The ability to back up hidden and system files.
CD-RW/DVD-RW disc erasing utility.
Full, detailed logging of all application actions.
Restore files from 'pax' archives back in place, or to a location of your choosing.
Choose to overwrite or leave existing files in place during restoration.
Restore UNIX files with original permissions.
Provide you with a streamlined, beautiful UI to accomplish these tasks.
.Impression is being developed as an absolutely reliable, open-standards solution to back up/archive personal files to optical discs and locally-mounted media. It uses the 'hfspax' archiving tool, which offers a reliable method for preserving all the facets and attributes of a complex Mac-based file. In addition, Impression offers the option to copy files to the destination media (using 'ditto') for archiving purposes. Large files are automatically segmented to span multiple discs with no need for operator input, save swapping CDs/DVDs when requested.
Both propellerheads and infrequent computer users should find that this application addresses their needs for a reliable, reasonably priced, open-standard personal backup solution. We all need to back up our data to keep it safe, and a single ~650MB CD is proving too limited to hold the multitude of files that we generate from our various digital input sources (video, music, photo, etc.)
Issues addressed and new features in Impression 2.6 include:
Impression now uses a new '.imps' restorable archive format. Backup and restore operations have both been enhanced to accommodate this new format, and both have been noticeably sped up as a result. The restore engine now seamlessly handles both older '.pax' based, Impression-generated archives as well as those in the newer '.imps' format archives. Full instructions are still included as to how to work with these archives from the command-line, and while they offer a new package-based format they are still open in their architecture and can be restored manually without using Impression's interface. This new format allows Impression to finally restore hfspax-based archived files containing regex characters in their names (i.e. - bracket characters '[' and ']').
Added Unicode support for session, log and archive catalog files. This enables session lists to load file lists with Unicode-based paths (i.e. - Asian, etc.), and also enables the restoration of files with complicated Unicode-based paths as well. Please move, archive or trash your pre-2.6 generated '~/Library/Application Support/Impression/impression_log.txt' file and Impression will write a new Unicode (UTF-16) format file in its place. Older, non-Unicode session lists and archive catalogs can still be seamlessly read by Impression, though all new text-based documents will be written in Unicode (UTF-16) format.
Added initial UI support for forthcoming scheduling features, scheduled for completion with Impression 3.0. Thanks for your feedback, patience and patronage - all three have contributed to this feature finally making its way into Impression's life. If you haven't registered yet and regularly use Impression - please register your copy to encourage the addition of this and other features. Thanks!
Refactored the large file segmentation module for use with the new '.imps' archive format, which offered the side benefit of reducing the amount of scratch space necessary (1 x largest file size + disc image size, as opposed to 2 x largest file size + disc image size) and also allows for better scratch handling on non HFS filesystems with 32-character filename limits.
The log drawer is now auto-shown if errors are encountered during a backup session.
Reworded several alert panel statements and transcript entries to offer brevity and further clarity for various error and alert notifications.
Added support for the Preferences window to be closed when the 'Esc' key is pressed, and also made the window key and ordered front when the Preferences window is selected for display and is already shown.
Added some small enhancements to Impression's main window title bar to offer the information as to which tab is displayed.
Enhanced the text reporting routines to correctly discriminate between single and plural states when reporting file counts (i.e. - '1 file' versus '42 files').
Most likely fixed a crash that was occurring when the root backup list was initially processed that was reported by members of the community, though we were unable to reproduce internally. If you were experiencing this issue, please test it out and file a bug report if it isn't completely fixed. Thanks!
Fixed a bug in which the burn speed list couldn't be set of a drive had a top speed that wasn't a standard speed multiple (i.e. - 15x instead of 16x).
Fixed a bug in which a few file types weren't being processed if added directly to the backup list.
Fixed a bug in which certain long-path names were causing troubles during file segmentation routines on AFP- and SMB-mounted scratch volumes.
Fixed a bug in which the progress bar wasn't displayed correctly if the initial item processed for a disk was quite large.
Fixed a bug in which certain interface buttons could get into a half-clicked state if operated when the application was in the background and the buttons were pressed using OS X's 'click-through' mode.
Fixed a UI bug that reported a count of zero files backed up in the transcript if only a '.part_b' segment file was added to a final disc in the backup set.
Fixed a UI bug in which the 'Cleaning up...' panel was occasionally being overwritten by other archiving functions.
Fixed a UI bug that occasionally caused grayed-out selections to be highlighted in the burn speed setting popup button.
System requirements:
- Mac OS X 10.2.x or 10.3.x with the optional BSD subsystem components
- iTunes/DiscRecording supported CD-R/W drive or DVD-R/W(if backing up to optical disc)
- Blank CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R or DVD-RW media (if backing up to optical disc)

iText X 3.1.4 Text Editor/Word Processor [Mac-OS 7.1 /OS-X]
iText is a text editor with simple word processing. It has stability and lots of nice features selected from LightWayText. iText will definitely let you recall 'the Macintosh mind of the early days.
Editing operations are intuitive. There are many ways to change the appearance of your document; besides styles, there are decoration lines, the ability to change all paragraph indents or margins, and to paste in PICT images. Also, you can work with big text documents of even more than 32 kbytes at very high speed.
iText 3.1.1 onwards also supports importing and exporting Rich Text Format files (RTF) , and iText-X fully complies with Mac OS 10.3 (Panther) including a spell checker.
iText is widely used, from programming to the writing of various documents, in any language not only English and Japanese.
New in this version:
Fixed some bugs in the Wordwrap, so that when Flow Lines is checked, the 'smart quotes' are not separated from the text at a soft line break.
Fixed some bugs to improve stability.
System requirements:
iText covers Mac-OS 7.1 onwards including OS-X.
iText-X completely complies with Mac OS 10.3.
iText is Freeware. but you can change your copy of iText to iTextPro with Key-registration ($15 per user). iTextPro is almost the same as LightWayText except for the advanced features including Macro, Word Services, and Stream Editor, but is only for Macs. KDX 1.4 Hotline-Like Client/Server System With Encryption [Mac OS X or Mac OS 9]
KDX is a powerful "BBS"-style (Bulletin Board System) encrypted internet communications system that provides voice chat (Internet Telephone), text chat, messaging, news, file and folder transfer, remote access, trackers and more. It uses strong encryption to protect your communications for security and privacy. It is very useful for groups that need to collaborate on a project via the Internet. It is also very useful for remote administration of a computer. KDX uses a client/server architecture (NOT peer-to-peer).
While KDX works very well over the Internet, it also works very well on a LAN (local area network). KDX does not require an Internet connection, and is thus suitable for use on an internal company LAN, and for home or small business networking.
New in this version:
KDX Mini-Monitor appears on top of all other windows when you receive a message/chat when KDX is in the background or minimized/hidden, allowing you to read messages without bringing KDX to the front.
The Mini-Monitor can be enabled/disabled in Settings.
Clicking in the Mini-Monitor window brings KDX to the front.
MacOS: The "Show Messages When In Background" option is replaced with the Mini-Monitor option.
"Alerts Enabled" option in context menu on a chat button allows you to turn off the sounds and Mini-Monitor on a per-chat basis. Useful when you want to stay in a chat but do not want to be disturbed by it (for those of us who are already disturbed enough).
Hold down Shift key at startup to temporarily disable auto-connects.
Second-click on a user and choose "Ignore" if they are bothering you. Blocks messages, chat, invites, broadcasts.
New UltraSpiffyPlusÂ? Error window. Instead of multiple error windows piling up and flooding your screen, now if an error occurs when there is already an error window displayed, that same window grows "Next" and "Prev" buttons.
Error window shows time at which error occurred.
The standard built-in title font, Myoklonika, now includes Greek and Cyrillic/Russian characters.
Address Book items can now be individually colored, using the "File Label" colors from the current appearance. (G threatened to go public with my lamp fetish unless I added this.)
Recognize ".mp4" files as "video/mpeg4" (and ".m4a" already recognized as "audio/mpeg4").
Allow typing into the preview in font chooser windows. Useful for checking if a font includes certain characters.
MacOS X: Fixed problem where MacOS X stupidly disabled some keyboard layouts in the keyboard menu.
Sometimes the last chat button could disappear when resizing window. Fixed.
The maximize button on the chat window was broken.
MS Windows: When KDX was minimized to the system tray (by second-clicking any minimize), and you received a message, you couldn't see KDX flashing in the start bar.
MS Windows: When unminimizing KDX, no window was selected/focused.
MS Windows: Prevent multiple instances of the same program file from running because this can lead to problems and confusion.
"kdx://" URLs with no port number specified now assume Server instead of erroring.
Messages window now switches the server icon according to which user is selected.
System requirements:
Mac OS X or Mac OS 9
