xGestures 1.3 Mouse Gestures Suite For Mac OS X [OS X 10.3 up]

Mouse gestures are a neat user interface gimmick that allow you to perform common functions using quick mouse movements. They made their big break in web browsers such as Opera and Mozilla, though I can't say as of now who exactly pioneered them, since they have been around for a while in various forms. The basic idea, though, is that you can perform certain functions quickly and easily by combining mouse movement and pressing a mouse button. For example, if you wanted to "gesture left," it could be done by holding down the right mouse button, moving the mouse to the left, and then releasing the right mouse button. Or gesture up and right, by holding the right mouse button, moving the mouse up and then to the right, and then releasing the button. There are also "rocker" gestures that are performed by holding the right mouse button and then pressing the left button, or vise versa. It's a very quick, easy, and convenient way for interacting with your computer.

xGestures is a shareware program for Mac OS X 10.3 that allows you to use mouse gestures in all aspects of your Macintosh computer. You can define gestures for individual programs, or for the whole computer, and map them to useful functions like closing or minimizing windows, switching or launching applications, picking menu items or performing keystrokes, triggering Exposé, and much more!

It gives you a lot of control over how your computer will manage mouse gestures. You can specify global gestures that will apply to all applications, but you can also specify that certain applications shouldn't use global gestures. Also, if there's a program that you don't want gestures enabled in, possibly because you need to use your mouse and all of its buttons normally, you can disable gestures in that application and it will continue to function normally. Better still, you can enable gestures in a program without changing the functionality of any of the mouse buttons, allowing xGestures mouse gestures to be available in a program that already has its own mouse gestures, like Opera or Mozilla!

If you have a mouse with multiple buttons, you can specify that the third or fourth button be used to perform gestures if you want the right mouse button's functionality to remain the same. Also, you can specify a combination of modifier keys that need to be pressed in order for a gesture to happen, so that it's possible to perform mouse gestures even with a one button mouse.

The program works by installing a kernel extension that allows certain mouse buttons to remapped. By default, the extension is disabled and will not affect your system unless activated by the xGestures program. When xGestures is launched, it will then begin monitoring your mouse movements, and will perform specified actions and a mouse gesture is performed.

xGestures is known to be currently incompatible with some Kensington Mice and Wacom Tablets. The way the drivers for these particular products work unfortunately prohibits xGestures from being able to receive mouse events. Concerning Kensington Mice, users have reported that xGestures won't respond to the upper mouse buttons (i.e. buttons 3 and up), though the left and right buttons still function as normal. I am currently trying to fix this problem and hope to get it soon, but don't hold your breath just yet.

xGestures is currently entirely compatible with the following software: DoubleCommand, Sidetrack, USB Overdrive. (In USB Overdrive, be sure to set the gesturing mouse button to "click nth button" where n is the number of that button.)

xGestures is partially compatible with uControl. The features of uControl that affect the mouse currently do not work, but all other functions of uControl do work. If you want the functionality of both xGestures and uControl, consider getting Sidetrack, which is by the same author of uControl, provides the same functionality (and more), and is compatible with xGestures.

New in this version:
• (1.32) Bug fix: "Pick menu" in global gestures crash fixed for real this time
• (1.32) Minimizing window with shift key gesture doesn't go in slow motion anymore
• (1.31) Bug fix: Defining keystrokes in pref pane works again
• "Apply to window where gesture occurred" feature added for hiding/quitting applications.
• Compose email works with most email clients now
• Can add MS Office applications in pref pane now
• Menu item gestures perform better
• Bug fix: some keystrokes shouldn't be delayed anymore
• Bug fix: defining keystroke gestures works better now
• Various UI bug fixes concerning pref pane

Mac OS X 10.3 or higher

Deep Thought v1.0

Deep Thought is a front end for Boinc, a software platform developed at Berkeley which allows volunteers such as yourself to contribute unused processor cycles to help solve problems in physics, medicine, climatology, astronomy, and more. Combining tens of thousands of computers, Boinc users form what is effectively the most powerful supercomputer on the planet.

Until now, Boinc was only available as a command line application which required users to have a basic working knowledge of UNIX. Deep Thought, on the other hand, provides a very simple user interface for Boinc allowing anybody who wishes to contribute a chance to do so.

Steam 3.1 Displays Schedules For BBC Radio/TV & plays them [OS 10.2 up]

The BBC made some significant changes to its site in January which prevented previous releases of Steam from playing some of the stations. Release 3.1 fixes this as well as introducing several exciting new features.

The program reads and stores the schedules for the user's choice of BBC Radio and TV stations and displays a list of what's currently on in a small window. It will remind you when a favorite programme is about to start and allow you to quickly start that programme playing through RealNetworks' RealPlayer.

New in this release:
• An "Embedded" player, you no longer need to use the Real Player application (though it must be installed on your system)
• Now Playing window can show the time in the UK and has even more flexibility in appearance options
• Added flexibility in using the Find command
• Personalize the "listen again" page for each station to pick a different URL

The Embedded player is a major new feature. As Steam no longer needs to launch a separate application to play the BBC streams, your programme will be playing that much quicker. Having everything in one program makes things that much more convenient.

The interface improvements aren't just eye-candy, they make Steam even easier to use.

Advantages over just using your browser:
• Schedules only stay on the BBC web site for 24 hours after broadcast and they are gone forever, Steam will retain them for 30 days or any other interval you choose.
• If you use your browser to track what's on you have to use a significant portion of your screen to do so, Steam will fit in a small corner.
• You have to be on-line to read the web site but not to use Steam. Using iCal and iSync you don't even have to be at your computer!
• Steam always shows you times in your own time zone and stitches together in one schedule window what may actually be broadcast on different days in the UK.
• Daylight saving time is automatically taken care of (this is a big deal during the spring for North American users).
• You can simultaneously search all the stations' schedules for several weeks in one second or less (the program you just missed on Radio 4 may be repeated later on the World Service.)
• You can be reminded of the start of particular programmes or any programme whose description matches something or someone you are interested in.

System requirements:
• Mac OS X 10.2 or higher

ThermographX 1.2.6

ThermographX monitors the various temperature sensors inside your modern Macintosh G4 or G5.

• Records maximum and minimum temperatures.
• Shows temperature records over time, using a zoomable display so you can analyze short-term or long-term.
• Shows individual sensor temperatures on models that have them.
• Graphs customer-submitted temperature results for comparison with your own system.

ThermographX compatibility is still being determined. So far, it is known to provide accurate sensor readings on these models:

• 12" & 17" PowerBook G4.
• "Aluminum" 15" PowerBook G4.
• "Mirror Door" G4.
• Power Macintosh G5.
• iBook G4.
• G4 Cube.
• iMac G4 & G5.

Note: Motorola's MPC7450CE/D Rev 5 errata indicates "The thermal assist unit (TAU) is no longer supported on the MPC7450, MPC7451, or MPC7441.". Because of this, you will not be able to measure the junction temperature on any system with these processors. At current, this includes the "Gigabit" PowerBook G4 and the "2001 Quicksilver" G4's.

Note: Mac OS X 10.3.5 eliminates compatibility with some older Mac's, like the G4 Cube. I'm investigating if there is a workaround.

Thermograph 1.2.6 (5 February 2005):
• Added support for iMac G5.
• Updated with latest user-submitted temperature measurements.

ThermographX has a $7 registration fee.

Home Tidying Up 1.2d Helps Clean Up Your Home Folder [OS X 10.3 up]

When you decide to arrange a room at home, you proceed generaly by examining each element to see whether it is in double, if it is too old and useless or if it takes too much place. Then you decide to throw away this element or move it in another less used room (cellar, attic).
Home Tidying Up is an application which allows to use this method with the files which are in your Home folder.
Home Tidying Up analyzes in a recursive way all folders and sub-folders to classify each file according to 4 lists:
- duplicate files,
- biggest files,
- oldest files,
- image, movie and music files not in right folders,
- others files.

In each list, sorting are possible according to:
- file name,
- extension,
- size,
- age in days,
- path.

Then, for each file, 4 actions are provided:
- move to trash,
- reveal,
- move to another folder,
- make an alias.

This last action is reserved for the image, videos or music files which are not arranged in the right folders such as Pictures, Movies and Music. This action makes it possible to preserve the file in its folder while creating an alias in the folder of its type.

Home Tidying Up provides:
    •    an easy to use interface,
    •    a way to arrange files in your home,
    •    code written in AppleScript Studio so you can easely add other features.

New in this version:
