MainMenu1.4.2 Maintenance, Cleaning And Optimization Menulet [OS X 10.3 up]

MainMenu is an easy-to-use menubar item that allows you to run a large set of Mac OS X maintenance, cleaning and optimization tasks. MainMenu can repair permissions, update prebindings, clean system and users caches, empty many browsers caches/history, force empty the trash, clean logs, repair disks, and much more. Most tasks provide feedback in the log window during execution. The batch task function allows you to run many routines at once. Bug reports, feature requests, feedback (positive as well as negative) and anything else are welcome. MainMenu is and will always be free, but donations to support development and future projects are appreciated.

Primary Features
• Repair OS X Permissions
• Run System Maintenance Scripts
• Update Prebindings
• Clean System, User & Browser Caches
• Clean Logs, Preferences & Trashes
• Feedback in Log Window
• Repair & Eject Disks
• Batch Task Execution
• Much More

New in this version:
• Big bug fix: MainMenu would crash on next launch if "I have donated" preference was set. Thanks to all who reported this (and who donated grin)
• Bug fix: Menu icon (default set) sometimes looked ugly when being clicked if a task was running
• Improved overall stability
• Fixed bug where "Show Log Window" didn't turn into "Hide Log Window"
• New feature (!): Erase free space [Tiger only] (Zero Out, 7-Pass erasure, or 35-Pass erasure). Files deleted in the Finder are not actually removed from the HD. Data can be recovered. However, once one of the erase free space features are used, data recovery of deleted files is near impossible. Thanks goes to Leon Calderon for this feature request.
• Fixed issues with update prebinding and update locate database (there was an accidental /bin/ in the command)
• New feature: Rebuild LaunchServices database (useful if Finder's "Open With" menu shows applications no longer installed, or shows some as duplicates). Thanks Tohru Okai for the suggestion
• New website (some pages still under construction though), new domain name (http://www.santasw.com)
• Empty trash, when part of the batch tasks list, no longer asks for confirmation, thanks to Tony Yazbeck for pointing this out
• MainMenu's menu bar icon now sits to the left of MenuExtras and to the right of StatusItems, so it won't disappear due to lack of menubar space
• Changed bundle identifier from nr.co.rakka.MainMenu to com.santasw.MainMenu (this is the last time, as the domain name is proper now)
• Fixed issue where Mail.app was used for bug reports instead of the user's default mail application, e.g Entourage. Thanks to Alastair Scott (thebrix) for this
• Moved various application related menu items (e.g Preferences, Quit, About) to a submenu named "MainMenu". The menu is now much more compact
• Moved preference verifying and removal menu items to a submenu named "Preference Files". Menu has become even shorter
• When MainMenu is started, a small window will appear briefly (except after authorizing) indicating that it is located in the user's menu bar (many users don't read the product description prior to downloading it. This will help them)

System requirements:
• Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) or 10.4 (Tiger)
• BSD Subsystem (installation default)
• Administrator name and passphrase

MainMenu is freeware

Xsanity Defrag 1.1 Xsan Defragmentation App

Xsanity Defrag runs the command line utility, snfsdefrag (the Xsan File System Defrag Utility that ships with Xsan), to defragment files on Xsan volumes or storage pools.

The much-anticipated Xsan 1.1 updates are finally available for download. While each of the three above are obtainable via Software Update, you might prefer to check out these standalone installers. The release brings Tiger compatibility, new documentations, and a number of performance improvements, but few new features. The updates are free, and your existing Xsan serial numbers will of course continue to work.

What's new in this version:
Xsanity Defrag 1.1 has been updated for Xsan 1.1. The app is a GUI wrapped around the snfsdefrag command-line utility that ships with Xsan, allowing you to defragment files on Xsan volumes or storage pools with ease. It indicates the level of fragmentation on your Xsan volumes or storage pools, and allows you to monitor the progress of the defragmentation process.

System requirements:
Apple's Xsan

Important Notes: If any system in your SAN is running Xsan 1.1 on Mac OS X v10.4, then your metadata controllers must also run the same. You can't use a metadata controller running on Mac OS X v10.3 if any client is running Xsan 1.1 on Mac OS X v10.4.

We read this to mean the following: If all your systems are running OS 10.3, a mix of Xsan 1.0.1 and 1.1 is O.K. But if any client has OS 10.4 and Xsan 1.1, then you must upgrade your metadata controllers to OS 10.4 and Xsan 1.1.

FileChute 1.9 Sends Large Files Easily [OS 10.2 up]

FileChute is an easy-to-use app that turns sending multi-megabyte files from a pain to a simple drag-and-drop. FileChute even lets you send multiple files or folders in one single step. Just drop them in the chute and off it goes - automatically creating your choice of a dmg, zip or tar on the fly. Your recipient simply clicks on the link to retrieve the file. Since no special software is required on the receiving end, it doesn't matter whether she uses a Mac or a Windows PC.

Why use FileChute?

Anyone who has ever tried to send large files as e-mail attachments knows the headache - either the mails won't get through at all, or the recipients' mailboxes get flooded. When you use FileChute, you're sending links to the files rather than the files themselves, so sending files hundreds of megabytes in size is just as easy as sending any file. FileChute doesn't stop there, it provides a host of features to make your life easier:

• On-the-fly archiving (zip, tar or dmg) so sending multiple files or folders is as easy as sending a single file.
• Automatic obfuscating of filenames to keep your files more secure.
• On-the-fly encryption (.dmg only) for even better security.
• Auto delete files on server after a configurable number of days.
• Generate short URLs using SnipURL

New in this version:
• Transport engine rewritten to make use of Apple's dotMac SDK
• Setting up for .Mac use is now easier than ever if you already have iDisk set up on your Mac
• Updated Japanese localizations

System requirements:
• Mac OS X 10.2 or later
• One of the following:
° Apple .Mac account
° EarthLink account
° Account on a WebDAV-enabled webserver
° Account on an FTP-accessible webserver

Bochs 2.0.2 Cross Platform IA-32 Emulator

Bochs is a highly portable open source IA-32 (x86) PC emulator written in C++, that runs on most popular platforms. It includes emulation of the Intel x86 CPU, common I/O devices, and a custom BIOS. Currently, bochs can be compiled to emulate a 386, 486 or Pentium CPU. Bochs is capable of running most Operating Systems inside the emulation including Linux, Windows® 95, DOS, and recently Windows® NT 4. Bochs was written by Kevin Lawton and is currently maintained by this project.

Bochs can be compiled and used in a variety of modes, some which are still in development. The 'typical' use of bochs is to provide complete x86 PC emulation, including the x86 processor, hardware devices, and memory. This allows you to run OS's and software within the emulator on your workstation, much like you have a machine inside of a machine. For instance, let's say your workstation is a Unix/X11 workstation, but you want to run Win'95 applications. Bochs will allow you to run Win 95 and associated software on your Unix/X11 workstation, displaying a window on your workstation, simulating a monitor on a PC.

New in this version:
• fix possible segfault in wxWindows (Volker Ruppert)
• fix instrumentation (Stanislav Shwartsman)
• fix cdrom read_toc() function for
• BSD (Keith Matthew Jones)

Charles:

I do agree MainMenu is excellent. I did encounter a “situation” which I am unable to escape from.

I am running the 35 pass erase and it’s taken two days and the end seems nowhere in sight. (I have a 100GB hard drive with 40GB free on my Powerbook G4 867Mhz).

There is a warning which says I should not interrupt the process. The website says if I do interrupt it it’s a long process to get the drive up and running. I’ve emailed them for help but have not got any response.

Would you have any suggestiosn, leads, clues as to what i can do to interrupt this and get my drive back. The finder reports 0kb (which I believe is normal) but that does not allow me to run or launch any apps on my laptop other than safari!

I guess this was a bad idea to begin with !!

Regards as always.
