LyX/Mac 1.3.5: LyX on Mac OS X [OS 10.2 up]

LyX/Mac is a fully-featured implementation of LyX on the Mac OSX native graphics display, with the familiar Aqua look & feel and anti-aliased text. LyX/Mac does not require X11. LyX/Mac was runner-up in the Qt/Mac Application Developer Contest. In addition to standard word processor functions, Lyx includes an interactive math editor, interactive table editor, version control, a table-of-contents window acting as an outline browser, foot and endnotes, margin notes, and many tools for working with complex documents as well as simple ones.

LyX/Mac is available as a self-installing binary based on LyX 1.3.5 and the GPL Qt/Mac library. The prerequisites are Mac OS 10.2 or later and teTeX. If you prefer to build LyX/Mac, instructions are included in the LyX source.

The latest version of LyX/Mac 1.3.5 (October 13, 2004) contains a fix for problems with fonts in math environments.

Users upgrading from pre-1.3.4 versions of LyX/Mac directly to 1.3.5 should download a script to clean up their installations. (On multi-user systems, the script needs to be run once in each account.) The script will clean up old versions of preferences files, remove old fonts, and offer the option of deleting ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist, all of which are no longer needed for LyX/Mac 1.3.4 and greater.

Start LyX by double-clicking the icon. For those familiar with other versions of LyX, the Mac key functions as the CONTROL key for LyX key-mapping, and the Mac OPTION (ALT) key functions as both a META key and a COMPOSE key. For batch commands or debugging, you can start LyX from the command line with the case-sensitive /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx — modify as needed if you install LyX somewhere other than the Applications folder.

Note: Make sure there are no spaces in the path to LyX. (This will prevent LyX from finding your TeX installation, and you will be unable to generate outputs.)

Drag files to the open LyX window to open them. To enable double-clicking LyX files in the Finder, set LyX as the default application in Finder → File → Get Info → Open With.

Mac-like keyboard shortcuts for commands and cursor movements (like “OPT-LEFT” to move left one word) are provided as the default for new installations. (Users upgrading from earlier versions of LyX/Mac can specify mac.bind as their bind file in LyX → Preferencs → Look and Feel → User Interface. (Simply type “mac.bind” in that field.)

LyX/Mac uses the system default viewers, and should require no configuration for PDF and HTML. If you have MacDviX or MacGhostView installed, LyX will use them to preview DVI and Postscript. To specify a non-default GUI viewer use open -a app-name or open -a ‘Application Name’ in Preferences → Outputs → File formats → filetype → Viewer.

Spellcheckers compatible with LyX/Mac include aspell, ispell, and hspell. To use cocoAspell make a symbolic link from /Library/PreferencePanes/Spelling.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/cocoAspell to /usr/local/bin/aspell.

System requirements:
Mac OS X 10.2 and up

ClipClavin 1.0 for Mac OS X Released [OS X 10.3 up]

ClipClavin is a fun little utility that sits up in the menubar and will allow you to quickly copy & send Safari text, Safari URL's and even your clipboard to you or any other eMail address–it can even store your clippings to the iPod if you have one! We always found ourselves wishing to send a small paragraph or text, or even a URL from Safari to other friends–it got tedious to select the text, copy the text, move to Mail, create a new mail, paste the text, pick an address, and hit send...We always wanted a fast way to just select a block of text in Safari and just have it send instantly. On other occasions, we found that we liked to send clippings to our own eMail addresses, and found the numerous steps above to be just to cumbersome.

There are small JavaScripts out there that attempt to put this functionality into Safari, but we found they were just not feature-rich enough for our liking. Plus, what about sending our clipboard contents to ourselves or another user or saving the text to our iPod? ClipClavin to the rescue! You can even highlight a phone number on a Safari webpage and have it entered right into your Mac OS X address book This version will launch 5 times before asking you to puchase the software for $4.95.

Requirements:
Mac OS X 10.3 or later, Safari (for best results)

MacBibble 4.0 For Processing Raw Photos From Professional Digital SLRs [OS 10.2 up]

Bibble is designed to allow you gain the most quality from your digital SLR through the manipulation of?raw CCD files from the camera. Raw files are the digital equivalent of a film negative. They record up to 12 bits of information per pixel and store the data in an uncompressed form without any additional color corrections, sharpening or compression. By providing access to this virgin data, Bibble allows photographers to exercise maximum creative control over their final images, while simultaneously delivering the maximum quality possible. Conversely, Jpegs should be thought of as digital prints. Jpegs only records 8 bits of data per image, and are heavily processed in camera. Much like prints delivered by a photo lab, Jpegs have someone else's interpretation of what the color is supposed to look like. Additionally, while smaller in size, Jpegs have been compressed which introduces artifacts and reduces sharpening. Tiff files do not have the compression problems of Jpegs, but can be very large and slow to use. Even with all their size, they still only contain 8 Bits of data per channel, though they do not have the compression issues of Jpegs. With Bibble, you can quickly and easily browse through your raw files, edit and adjust them, and then save them in final form as either Jpegs or Tiffs. Additionally, Bibble offers many powerful tools that allow you to adjust the images to your satisfaction.

System requirements:
Mac OS X 10.2 or higher

GURL Watcher 1.8.0 Records URLs Visited By Browser [OS 7.6.1 up/OS 10.1 up]

Now you can take charge of what your children, employees or anyone else is doing while they're surfing online, without resorting to usually futile attempts at censorship or using complicated filtering software.

GURL Watcher helps you to establish a system of trust and responsible use, rather than trying to impose filtered access that may inadvertently cut people off from perfectly legitimate sites.

GURL Watcher silently watches the web sites displayed in a browser. Just install, configure, turn it on, and that's it. Every time your machine restarts GURL Watcher will automatically watch any browser activity and report it.

GURL Watcher works completely in the background to record all the sites visited by a computer's users. You can either save these URLs in a designated file known only to you, or email them to a designated address.

GURL Watcher for Mac OS X now supports page checking for inappropriate content. You set the words and phrases you deem inappropriate. GURL Watcher will then close the browser window if these words or phrases are found in the page. This function is completely optional and can be used independent of the URL reporting capabilities of GURL Watcher. See the Mac OS X Help page for more details.

No filter lists. No subscriptions. Just plain and simple Internet monitoring.

What customers are saying about GURL Watcher:
• "I like this software because it allows me as a manager to let my group know that they are being monitored passively. I am not denying them access through a filter. This tends to be cumbersome at best, and is easy to work around. "
• " I like the simplicity and power of this software. It doesn't slow down browsing or my system. It doesn't cause problems, it just does what it is supposed to do and lets me do what I am supposed to do."
• "Filtering simply doesn't work and can't work well, for obvious reasons. GURL Watcher works well and I can easily review a day's activities within a few seconds. GURL is also a useful URL historical log for me. "

Teach anyone that you want them to use the Internet responsibly, and that you trust them to visit only appropriate sites.

GURL Watcher observes all sites visited using most popular Internet browsers.

New in this version:
• Added support for multiple email recipients. Email addresses only need to be separated with a comma.
• Fixed potential bug where the background app could continually try to send out a single email report if it did not receive the proper responses from the SMTP (mail) server.

System requirements:
Mac OS X 7.6.1/10.1 or higher

Mac Classic System Requirements:
• A PowerPC Macintosh with an Internet connection (no 68K version available at this time).
• MacOS 7.6.1 or later with Open Transport v1.1.1 or later (not yet OS X compliant)
• A popular internet browser (Netscape Navigator/Communicator, Internet Explorer, iCab or Opera). No AOL browser support at this time.
• A direct way to send email via your ISP's SMTP server (if you wish to receive URL reports via email).

Mac OS X System Requirements:
• A PowerPC Macintosh with an Internet connection.
• Mac OS X 10.1 or later.
• A popular internet browser (Safari, Netscape Navigator/Communicator, Internet Explorer, iCab or Opera). No AOL browser support at this time.
• A direct way to send email via your ISP's SMTP server (if you wish to receive URL reports via email).
