Y'know, it's fascinating that Microsoft is getting more press than it has for months because of a story vectored off Apple. Here's some links to a small sampling of the tsunami of commentary over Microsoft having hired Jerry Seinfeld as a pitchman for Windows Vista for a rumored $10 million.
WSJ: Microsoft Hires Seinfeld To Bite Apple
Macworld UK's's Steven Schwankert reports:
Apple keeps pummeling Microsoft in its ads, and yadda yadda yadda, the world's largest software maker plans to hire comedian Jerry Seinfeld for its new marketing campaign, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
Continually painted by Apple and other rivals as uncool and unsafe, Microsoft plans to spend US$300 million on a new series of advertisements designed around its "Windows Not Walls" slogan that will feature Seinfeld and Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.
Seinfeld will take home $10 million for his role in the spots....

Snide Seinfeld Won't Undo Apple's Friendly Image
U.S. News And World Report's David LaGesse says:
I don't think "Mac Nazi" jokes will do it. I'm a fan of Jerry Seinfeld, the comedian Microsoft has reportedly hired as a key pitchman in ads for Windows Vista. The campaign is designed to boost the image of its beleaguered operating system and answer Apple's wildly successful "Mac vs. PC" ads. (Those ads succeed partly because they poke Windows with gentle humor. The hip Apple guy even appears sympathetic to PC's plight.)
Sympathy and empathy don't come to mind when thinking of Seinfeld.....

eWeek's Joe Wilcox says:
Microsoft is about to unleash its $300 million Vista marketing campaign. Can negative perceptions be changed?...
I've got my doubts about what Microsoft can do. According to the Journal, Microsoft is paying Jerry Seinfeld $10 million to appear in some of the advertising.....

Can $300 Million, a Veteran Stand-up Comic, And A Recent Retiree Spruce Up Windows' Battered Reputation?
Technologizer's Harry McCracken says:
The big news in the blogosphere today involves new details about Microsofts upcoming $300 million Windows ad campaign: It will apparently feature Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld, use the slogan Windows, Not Walls, and begin on September 4th. Im not a professional ad critic, and I cant even play amateur critic before Ive seen the ads in question. But I cant stop my mind from racing ahead, either.....
Seinfeld? The Bee Movie guy? The husband of that cookbook author? The fellow whose sitcom (1989-1998, RIP) dates from the heyday of Windows 95? (Correction: When the show premiered, the current version of Windows was 2.0!) Again, its odd to see Vista associated with someone whos most famous as the leading comedian of a previous era. Not that theres anything wrong with that.
How big a problem is it that Jerry - at least the fictional Jerry on his show - was famously a Mac user? Does that affect the credibility of his pitch? Did he switch allegiances for an easy $10 million? Did he actually move to a PC in, say, 2001 or thereabouts, but nobody noticed? Is the whole question moot, since no rational person would choose an operating system because a famous comedian told them to?....

Microsoft's Turn To Seinfeld May Need Virus Protection
BusinessWeek's David Kiley says:
When Jerry Seinfeld starts appearing in Microsoft Windows ads, will the fact that he always had a Mac on his desk during the iconic TV series figure into the work created by Miami ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky?
As reported by The Wall Street Journal today, Microsoft, frustrated that its Vista operating system becomes less and less attractive with each passing week, is turning to an ad strategy that will feature the uber-successful comedian Seinfeld, and even company founder Bill Gates.
Its difficult, and unfair, to pass an opinion on ads I havent seen yet. But, going in, Im suspicious of the strategy of using Seinfeld, 54, to attract new users and would-be Mac users to Vista and thus PCs.
One doesnt have to look very hard to find the foil to this strategy. Its the Apple campaign for Mac computers. Quick: name the two actors who play in the ongoing story in Mac ads

Why did Microsoft Pick Seinfeld? Because 1998 was when MSFT was last Relevant
The DigitalLifestyleTV says:
Look out Apple! You're uncontested ribbing of Vista in all those "Mac and PC" ads is about to be challenged. Yes the sleeping Redmond dragon is waiting. And if you thought "The Mojave Experiment" made marketshare dip (it didn't), wait til you see what Jerry Seinfeld will do!..
Yes, last relevant in the 90's, like Microsoft itself, Seinfeld is the new pitch man as part of a $300 million ad campaign. Ya know, Microsoft, for that much money you could probably hire away a few app engineeers, and actually fix Vista. But I digress...
