SafariStand 2.0b14 Thumbnail Tabs For Safari - Mini-review - OS X Odyssey 796 [UPDATED]

5939 Like the thumbnail "tabs" feature in the OmniWeb browser, but not so smitten with OmniWeb's $29.95 price? SafariStand is a free solution that adds a Sidebar with thumbnail tabs and a bunch of other feature enhancements to Safari, and you still get to keep the conventional tabs as well.

Indeed, I like SafariStand's implementation of thumbnail tabs better than OmniWeb's because the tab sidebar stays within the main browser window area, rather than in a slide-out drawer - a significant consideraation when you work on a 1024 x 768 display. The sidebar can be positioned either on the left or the right.

SafariStand has actually made me like using Saari, something I've never been able to say before. I always thought the thumbnail tabs feature in OmniWeb was kinda' cool, but I didn't like getting along without conventional tabs. SafariStand gives you a choice.

Installing SafariStand adds a menu to Safari with controls for the program and its added features.

- Sidebar with thumbnail tabs.
- 'Stand Bar' (Bookmark, History, Side Bar compatible, Simple RSS Reader)
- 'Quick Search'

Key Action Tab

This feature uses ignored keys to provide functional enhancements.

Bookmark Tab

Allows colorisation of bookmarks.

Site Alteration Tab

Gives users the option to add sites to a list which then can be edited to alter the way these sites are viewed within Safari.

SafariStand Operation

The stand menu itself is added to the right hand side of the Safari Help menu-bar location. This drop down menu enables you to change the text encoding as well as accessing the preference settings for Safari Stand.

The Sidebar

The sidebar is equipped with OmniWeb style thumb-nailed tabs. It can be switched on and off with the 'Toggle Sidebar' option from the menu bar, or you can add a 'button' to the Safari Toolbar via Safari's customise Address bar option.

Each new tab opened will appear in the sidebar with a windowed image of the site. To open a new window just double click in the sidebar, then enter the required URL or click on the appropriate bookmark.

Thumbnails can be re-ordered by dragging and dropping them into the positions you require.

In the Safari Stand settings you can choose either regular or small window sizes. You can also alter their width by dragging the Sidebar separator bar to the left or the right.

The Bookmark Shelf

I couldn't find any documentation on this feature, and frankly, couldn't figure out exactly what its intended function is or how to make it work.

UPDATE: Applelinks reader Winston writes:

Hi Charles

SafariStand's "Bookmark Shelf" is actually similar to Opera's "Save Workspace". After opening the "Bookmark Shelf", select "Create Shelf from Current Workspace" from the Stand menu, and you'll get a new Shelf in the "Bookmark Shelf" window containing the addresses for all your opened tabs. To open the saved Shelf, select it and press "Open in Tab" in the lower left corner.

Thanks for the mini-tutorial Winston!

This is too cool. One of my favorite features in Opera, and I like the way it works in SafariStand even better.

The Stand Bar

The stand bar feature is similar to that of the side bar of Mozilla. With SafariStand this sidebar appears as an independent window. It can be toggled on and off by way of a user definable hot-key (defined in the SafariStand settings).

It gives users four options, Bookmarks, History, Side bar, and a simple RSS Reader.

The Action Menu

This menu is accessed via the action menu button on the Safari toolbar. It provides access to 7 options.

Copy URL - copies the current URL into the clipboard.

Copy Title - This copies the current pages title into the clipboard/

Copy Link HTML Tag - this copies the current URL into an HTML format e.g. Hetima:SafariStand

Show Page Info - Opens a new window with information such as server kind and the option to view the pages sub resources.

Sub Resources - shows links to the current pages sub resources such as its CSS file and associated page images.

Arrange Tabs - This allows the current tabs to be rearranged and viewed at different sizes.

Stand Search

Stand search is an independent window that can be toggled off and on using a user defined hot-key. It provides two search options; first to search bookmarks and a user's browser history for an item, and Second toenable a spotlight search of your web archive and html on your system. You can select for the latter whether or not you wish to include file contents in your search.

English documentation is not available yet. But User Interface is "almost English".

In summary, SafariStand is worth downloading for the thumbnail tabs feature alone, and the other features are icing on the proverbial cake.

• Universal Binary
• Action Menu : added "Copy Link as Markdown"
