Pepsi/iTunes (take 2) begins

572 Pepsi and Apple's second go at an music/sugar water promotion kicked off for real today, as people lucky enough to find a winning code under specially-marked bottles of Pepsi's products will be able to redeem them for songs. The companies have promised a 1-in-3 chance of winning, with a total potential giveaway of 200 million songs.

The two companies did a similar promotion last year, but were plagued by problems of getting the bottles into locations, with a result that out of 100 million "winning" caps, only about 5 million were redeemed.

Pepsi appears to have gotten the kinks worked out, at least at the early stage: many locations were reporting that the specially-marked bottles (with yellow caps) had started showing up as much as a week before the redemption period began.

Another change from the original promotion (apart from the increase in the number of winners) is that other drinks besides Pepsi and Diet Pepsi were included. Get your caffeine from Mountain Dew? You're in luck, along with drinkers of Pepsi Wild Cherry, Diet Mountain Dew, Mountain Dew Code Red and Sierra Mist.

One issue that has not been resolved is "The Tilt." During last year's promotion, users quickly noticed that if they held a Pepsi bottle at a slight angle and looked up through the clear plastic, they could discern whether the bottlecap read "Play Again," which of course meant that users could quickly determine whether or not you would get a free song. I have been able to verify (after purchasing the bottle) that you can indeed still read the bottom of the cap through the clear plastic of a Diet Pepsi bottle, though the green Mountain Dew bottle prevents this.

As an aside, the number of winners may be a bit more evenly distributed this time around. Last year, the vast majority of my caps were winners, but out of three bottles this year, I'm only one for three.

Bill's been using Macs since the late 80s. When he's not making smartass remarks to amuse Kirk Hiner, he enjoys fighting for the user.
