Mr.Clean Duplicate File Elimination Utility
There are several duplicate file elimination utilities for the Mac — one of the best known being Allume Systems' $49.99 Spring Cleaning 7.0 Mac.
And then there's Mr. Clean, which is not nearly as powerful or richly featured as Spring Cleaning, but it's free, and it works quite well for simple purging of duplicates empty folders and orphaned aliases.
MrClean searches for duplicated files comparing (if same):
- Creation and modification dates
- File Types
- File lengths
- File names
Note well: file names comparing is disabled if "Remove duplicates with changed name" is checked; if in douby uncheck it. You also get a much faster scan if it's unchecked.
MrClean searches for empty folders — folders with no visible files. If a folder contains a folder containing a folder, all three will be trashed. After removing duplicates you could have more empty folders. Relaunch scan to remove them.
MrClean searches for all aliases, linked to original file or not.
MrClean does not search inside the System folder.
MrClean is being very actively developed. There have been four version releases since I first downloaded it to check it out last week.
As I noted, it works well. One thing that bugged me about the first version I tried was that there was no way to abort a scan, other than using Force Quit. However, that has been fixed, and now you just hold down the Command key to stop the process.

The program displays a log to inform you what has been done. Here is a log from a test folder I scanned.

MrClean is developed by Francesco Vinci, an architect and university teacher of CAD design, and is localized in English or Italian language.

I quite like the sterMachine interface, which is clear, intuitive, and convenient, and the little application works well. One criticism is that there is no progress bar for running processes, which keeps you guessing as to remaining duration.
New in this version:
• G5 Computer compatible
• Login screen feature
System Requirements:
Mac OS X 10.3 or higher
BSD subsystem (usually installed by default)
stermachine is freeware
