OS X Odyssey 585 - Bible Reader Free 0.98 Bible Viewing Application

816 Hiddenfield Software has announced the release of the latest update to Bible Reader Free, taking it up to preview version 0.98.

A Bible reading and search package, allowing quick access to any book, chapter or verse of the Bible, Bible Reader Free provides access to multiple books/chapters simultaneously. Features include the ability to search for words across all or select parts of the Bible, and apply 'swaps' automatically (where one word can be changed for another - like 'you' for 'thee').

Being a Cocoa application, Bible Reader Free supports OS X Services, which allows you to copy selected blocks of text into supported applications like DEVONthink or Tex Edit Plus with a quick menu selection.

There is also a Notes feature allowing for the creation of study notes, and the Copy Formatted feature allows one-click formatting of selected verses to the clipboard or a study note.

Bible Reader Free does supports the following Bible Bible translations and commentaries:
KJV
BBE
Strong's
ASV
Derby's
Webster's

Switching among the different translations is simplicity itself; just select an alternative one from the translation popup menu.

I really like the Bible Reader Free interface and navigation/search features, and I've found over the past six months or so that Bible Reader Free is the Bible software application I use most largely because it is speedy and I like its search interface best.

To conduct a search, open up the search dialog [Edit->Find], type in the word or phrase you wish to find. Choose the scope of the search from the popup menu. To select specific books only to search, click Select Books and make your choice there. Check 'whole words' to only find 'heal' and not 'healing' or 'healed', for exmaple. Finally, click Find to retrieve all matches.

The Search Results window will appear. While the program performs the search, an indication of what book is currently being searched will be shown at the top. At any time, hold down Command to stop the search.

Selecting a search result from the list will display the context of the word/phrase in the field below the list. Double-clicking a search result will open a new Browser window [or use a currently-open one] and display the passage that contains that verse.

The search dialog has been changed in this release to make it more intuitive to use, but the excellent functionality remains.

To use Bible Reader Free, open up a new Browser window [File->New Browser], then select the book of the Bible to read. If required, enter a chapter [and verse, separated by a ; ] into the chapter;verse field, then click Go (or press Return).

You can Open as many Browser windows as you like, to view different passages simultaneously.

The Copy Format option from the Edit menu will take the selected verses and format them, before placing the text into the Clipboard.

The formatting encloses the selection in speechmarks, applies '...' to the start and/or end -- depending on whether the selection extends to the beginning/end of the verse/s -- and adds the verse reference below in brackets.

For example:
"...God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world..."
[John 3:16-17]

Click the Notes button at the bottom of any Browser window to show the Notes editor. This window can be left open for continued viewing/editing of notes as you browse the Bible.

On the Text Tab of the Preferences dialog, there is a Reading Mode option. Normal presents the Bible as you have most likely always seen it: with verse numbers before each verse.

Changing the Reading Mode to Story removes the verse numbers and formats the text with paragraph indents, more like a standard book. This is a quite a nice alternative way to read the Bible.

Another handy feature is Swaps. In essence, any word or phrase found in the text can be automatically swapped for another when browsing the Bible. As an example, the list of swaps that ships with Bible Viewer aims to replace many of the old-english words in the King James Version of the Bible with more modern words.

I have noticed a few bugs in Bible Reader Free 0.98 that were not evident in the 0.96 build. The scroll arrows in the search results window don't work properly, and I has an "unexpected quit" which was not typical of the earlier version.

New in this version:

[FIX] A Browse window with the Strong's drawer open would always force itself to the front of other windows.

[FIX] Saving a Note did not change its name in the Window menu.

[NEW] Quick Jump feature. Press Cmd-J to open the Jump window. Type the first few letters of the book to jump to and optionally enter the chapter and/or verse and press Return to go there in the frontmost Browse window. Hold down Cmd when pressing Return to open the chapter in a new window

[OPT] Optimised searches when Swaps were activated

[CHG] Simplified the Swap options where searches are involved. Now, whenever Swaps is activated in the Preferences, Swaps is also active in searches and search results

[NEW] Cmd-1 to Cmd-9 changes the translation of the frontmost Browse window, in then order they are listed in the translation popup menu. Additionally, Cmd-0 will show the Search results window

[NEW] Search results window: it's now possible to adjust the divider between the listed results at the top and the verse shown at the bottom

[FIX] It's now possible to Copy text from the Search Results window (the lower field showing the selected search verse) and from the Strong's definition in the Strong's drawer

[FIX] Save As was not working at all for Notes.

[CHG] Searches only find the original words in the biblical text, not the Swaps that replace them. For example, searching for 'you' where it is a Swap for 'thou' will not return it as a result, but searching for 'thou' when they have been swapped for 'you' will.

System requirements:
Mac OS X

Dear Charlie,
Thanks for this exhaustive review. As a publisher of Preacher’s Outline & Sermon Bible® verse-by-verse software, we are often asked by our users for a simple Bible text software program. BIBLE READER FREE seems to be the answer we’ve been looking. Keep up the great work for the Macintosh community.

Charles, the additional bible translations are nowhere to be found on hiddenfiels’s site.

Hi Al;

They are there; just, well, sort of hidden..... wink

I just downloaded the ASV this afternoon.

Try this URL:

I’ve moved the links for Bible Reader, and the extra translations, to the homepage to make them easier to find!
