795 DEVONnote is DEVONtechnologies' new note pad capable of storing and organising plain or rich texts and file aliases. Think of it as a "lite" version of DEVON's powerful and versatile DEVONthink freeform database and information manager, and you won't be too far off. The two programs share many features and interface conventions -- DEVONnote just has fewer features and capabilities and sells for half as much (or less -- see below).

You can store and manage your bookmarks in DEVONnote, browse the Web using the integrated browser based on Apples's WebKit, capture interesting notes immediately or organise webcams. DEVONnote also helps you sort in new stuff and supports cross and Wiki-style links.

To import a few of your documents you want to manage with DEVONnote, for example Word docs, plain and rich texts or links, drag-and-drop them to the DEVONnote icon in the dock or into the browser window DEVONnote. After a short while, the documents should appear in the browser and are now ready-to-use.

DEVONnote supports plain and rich text files (RTF/RTFD), source codes, SimpleText files, Word documents (on Mac OS X 10.3 or with DEVON's free AntiWordService installed), iChat logs, text clippings and Internet locations (URLs).

Besides simply dragging files or complete folders onto DEVONnote, there are additional ways to get you stuff in. Here are some of them:

- Use "File > Import..." to import files or folders or "File > Link To..." to create links to files

- Alternatively, you can create links to files in the file system by pressing the and keys and dragging files into a browser window.

- Copy some text to the clipboard from your word processor or web browser and choose "New with Clipboard" from DEVONnote's dock menu and select the destination group. Alternatively, you can choose "Content > New > From Clipboard" from DEVONnote's main menu.

You can also select text in any Cocoa application, for example Safari, or in service-aware Carbon applications and choose "Services > DEVONnote > Take Plain Note" or "Services > DEVONnote > Take Rich Note" from the application menu (the one named after the frontmost application). The Service menu commands "Append Plain Note" and "Append Rich Note" append the selected text to the last note taken.

- Drag selected text or URLs onto a browser window.

- Drag text, images, movies, files or URLs into rich text documents

Based on Apples WebKit, the engine behind Safari, DEVONnote's complete, built-in web browser can conveniently view web pages, capture and search them without leaving the application.

To view a web page in DEVONnote, you have to create a link document first via the menu "Content > New Link". Name the new document and type the URL it shall point to into the URL field. Alternatively, drag any Internet Location document from the Finder to any DEVONnote browser or onto the application icon in the dock. It's of course also possible to drag links or bookmarks from Safari or other web browsers to DEVONnote.

If you enter a URL as the name for a new link, DEVONnote automatically sets the URL of the item too. E.g. create a link, enter "www.apple.com" - that's it.

DEVONnote is a nice little much better than basic database and information management application. For DEVONthink users like me, it's hard to evaluate it objectively since it essentially is a leaned-down version of DEVONthink, and thus one finds oneself missing the things that aren't there from the elder sibling program, which isn't really fair, because DEVONnote offers considerably more than half the useful capability of DEVONthink for half the price. If you don't need (or haven't gotten used to) the really advanced power-features of DEVONthink, then DEVONnote is a great value and a real bargain.
