One workaround I use a lot is to press the Control key while taking a screenshot, which copies the captured image to the clipboard rather than creating a file, and you can than paste it into an image editor document for editing, resizing, etc. This works with both the Command>Shift>3 and the Command>Shift>4 shortcuts.
Another workaround is to use a third-party file conversion utility to transform the PDF image into something more tractable.
One that I like is is a little $5.00 shareware utility called Kunvert 1.5 that transforms PDF image files into JPG or PICT files via simple drag & drop. In addition, Kunvert can optionally scale images during conversion.
If you pay the $5,00 registration fee to upgrade to the Pro version, Kunvert will convert more formats like gif, pict, bmp, and png, to jpg or pict, as well as the ability to convert all the pages in a pdf file.

To use Kunvert, just drop the files to convert onto the application icon, or to the program window.
In the preferences window you can choose some extra options, like Delete the original item after conversion or Quit the application when finished.

One trick: if you have the option key pressed when conversion is finished, the original file will be deleted.
New in version 1.5
Choose the destination folder.
Set the final picture size using percentages.
Can convert any single page from a multipage PDF file.
Automatic conversion of all the pages from a multipage PDF (Pro version only).
I've found that Kunvert works well, and is a lot more convenient than the Preview export rigimarole.
System requirements:
Mac OS X 10.0 or higher
Kunvert is freeware
Kunvert Pro is $5 shareware. When you register Kunvert, it gets automatically updated to Pro version.
