OS X Odyssey 442 - Finder Icon Tweaks And Tricks

1878

I’m always finding out new stuff about OS X, and I expect I’ve hardly scratched the surface yet (see Mark Rushton’s letter below). This week, I’ve been experimenting with some of the optional features for displaying icons and file information in the Finder.

One neat wrinkle in OS X that didn’t obtain in the Classic OS is that you can specify icon display sizes in individual Finder windows. Just open a window, press Command > J to summon the View Preferences dialog, and adjust the Icon Size slider to the desired magnitude of icon display. You can also have this preference apply to all windows, or just the one you’re in.

While you’re in the View Preferences dialog, you can also specify that file info be displayed in each file’s text field. With folder icons, the number of icons in each folder will be shown. With QuickTime movie icons, the runtime will be displayed.

And last but not least for today, if you click “Show Icon Preview,” generic graphics document icons will be replaced with cool little thumbnail preview renderings of the picture. Very useful when you’re rooting around in a large folder of images for the one you want.

Your response to “Powerbook problem”

From Mark Rushton

Charles,

May I respectfully suggest you jumped over a helpful shutdown option in your response to DG, whose husband’s Powerbook G4 wouldn’t respond.

The order of fixes would be:

1/ Command-Option-Esc to force quit the app. 2/ Command-Control-Power to do a soft restart 3/ Press and hold the power key for five seconds for a proper parked-head shutdown. 4/ All-else-fails-scenario: pull the battery.

#3 is the one you missed, and it’s a definite “do” before #4, which does not park the hard drive heads.

ciao!

Hi Mark;

I learn new stuff all the time, and am always happy to. Thanks for the four point plan. If I’d ever heard or read the #3 tip, it had slipped my mind (not the only thing, alas wink ).

BTW, in the case of DG’s husband’s TiBook, Command > Control > PowerKey worked.

Charles
