OpenOSX WinTel 2.0.1 Now Accelerated for Intel

661 Press Release Edited By Applelinks Contributing Editor Charles W. Moore

Windows never felt so right on the Mac!

Experience full-compatibility with x86/Pentium processors with disk images, CD-ROM support and much more on your Mac.

WinTel is our popular Cocoa graphical user interface used to control the included powerful underlying open-source "Bochs" x86 emulation software (Bochs is pronounced as Box). We now include both PowerPC and Intel optimized binaries.

We have successfully tested this version of WinTel/Bochs running Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows XP Professional in addition to the included ten ready-to-use operating systems (see below).

WinTel offers limited support for the following: a virtual Network Interface Card (NIC), "Sound Blaster" compatible card, USB, and 32-bit color SVGA Video.

A CD-ROM drive is supported and floppy disk support may be achieved by creating a disk image with Apple's Disk Utility software. Use the Finder to transfer data between the emulator and the Mac OS X operating system.

We have developed a tutorial for installing Windows XP at: WinTel XP Tutorial, we have a tutorial for installing Windows 98 at: WinTel 98 Tutorial and a tutorial for installing Windows 95 at: WinTel 95 Tutorial. Note that for the use of XP we recommend a Intel based Mac or a fast G5, regardless, our host Windows operating system of choice is 98 mainly due to the substantially longer boot times required for XP compared to 98.

Our WinTel product includes the following separate disk images with 10 different popular open source x86 operating systems pre-installed:

FreeBSD   Red Hat Linux OS
  GNU Hurd   MuLinux
  FreeDos   PicoBSD
  Minix   NetBSD
  Debian Linux   DLX Linux

Our smart "Universal-Binary" is fully compatible and optimized for Intel Duo Macs, PowerMac G5s and PowerMac G4s, with more optimizations under development.

Simply copy any of your VirtualPC files over to a WinTel disk image by using the Finder (note that you must be able to mount the VPC Disk Image). Most ".img" files can even be used directly!

Thanks to Mac OS X's advanced architecture, multiple G4/G5 CPUs can be utilized and emulated as a single powerful Pentium® processor or as dual Pentium Processors. Mac OS X is a true chameleon of operating systems, users may now run a long list of operating systems within it: Mac OS 9, Windows 95/98/2K/NT, DOS, Linux, Unix, BSD, etc. software, seamlessly and on your Mac today.

Just drag WinTel to the location of your choice to start enjoying OpenOSX WinTel 2.0.1 with fully configured Bochs 2.2.5 with ready-to-use disk images of various x86 operating systems. Note that commercial operating systems such as Windows® are not included which you must have a license to use.

We recommend a G5, Intel Macs are ideal. CPU intensive games/software are not recommended for non-Intel Macs, please see our WinTel FAQ.
