Featuring a native Serial ATA (SATA) interface and high-speed 16X DVD+R and 16X DVD-R recording, the internal drive combines fast performance, 150 MB/sec bandwidth, and recording features that ensure reliable, high-quality results across a broad spectrum of media.
The drive achieves blazing fast 16X CAV performance on recommended 8X DVD+R media, and burns a 4.7GB DVD in less than six minutes, one minute faster than leading ZCLV competitors. The new drive also supports dual-layer DVD media, enabling users to burn up to four hours of high-quality MPEG-2 video on a single 8.5GB DVD disc in approximately 28 minutes.
The internal PX-716SA drive features an integrated Serial ATA connection, enabling OEMs and System Integrators to leverage the benefits of SATA, including 150 MB/sec bandwidth, elimination of master/slave configuration jumper issues, a substantial pin count reduction, and thinner cables to help air-flow and improve cable routing.
"The newest 16X DVD drive from Plextor is specifically designed for personal computer manufacturers who want to integrate a DVD/CD burner that sets new standards for performance, convenience, and reliability," said Howard Wing, vice president of sales and marketing for Plextor. "The combination of Serial ATA interface, support for dual-layer media, and the Intelligent Recording features can really help OEMs differentiate their PCs from competitive offerings."
The Plextor PX-716SA is a highly versatile 9-in-1 DVD/CD burner that supports 4x DVD+R Double Layer, 16X DVD+R, and 16X DVD-R Writing; 8X DVD+RW and 4X DVD-RW Rewriting; and 16X max DVD-Reading; as well as high-speed 48X CD-R Writing, 24X CD-RW Rewriting, and 48X max CD-Reading.
The PX-716SA has an 8 MB buffer and features Buffer Underrun Proof Technology to prevent buffer underrun errors and allow multi-tasking. Lossless Linking/Zero Link technology enables users to perform basic editing tasks directly on the DVD disc.

The PX-716SA also features Intelligent Recording, a combination of technologies designed to achieve high-quality recordings across a broad spectrum of media with varying grades of quality:
-- Intelligent Tilt is a precise laser and three-dimensional tilt control to reduce jitter and achieve optimal recording and reading on uneven disc surfaces.

Adobe Introduces Acrobat 7.0 Software
Adobe Systems Incorporated has introduced Adobe Acrobat 7.0 software, a family of desktop applications that provides capabilities far beyond converting documents into the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). Now, workgroups can use Acrobat 7.0 and Adobe PDF to manage a range of essential business activities such as assembling documents from multiple sources, creating intelligent forms, and more securely collaborating on projects inside and outside the firewall.
For the first time, Acrobat 7.0 Professional customers can now include virtually anyone in an electronic review of a PDF document by enabling access to commenting tools in free Adobe Reader 7.0 software. Adobe Reader users can quickly provide feedback on a PDF file that consists of several content types -- from scanned paper to spreadsheets, presentations, and now, 3D computer-aided design (CAD) content.
The Acrobat 7.0 family, the latest update to the Adobe Intelligent Document platform, now offers enhanced integration with Adobe LiveCycle software, the company's product line for document services that connect people with business processes. The inclusion of Adobe LiveCycle Designer, the company's professional form design tool, with Acrobat 7.0 Professional provides users the ability to create sophisticated XML and PDF forms that can be integrated into back-end systems. Also, Acrobat 7.0 Professional and Acrobat 7.0 Standard are tightly integrated with Adobe LiveCycle Policy Server. The combination enables organizations to apply and manage document policies for helping control access, auditing, expiration, and revocation rights to a PDF document.
"Over time, PDF has evolved from a static format for publishing final documents to a flexible technology more widely and thoroughly leveraged by workgroups and enterprises," said Timothy Hickernell, vice president at META Group, a leading provider of IT research, advisory services and strategic consulting. "As the format's evolution has taken place, the market for products that offer more than basic PDF creation has begun to flourish."
The Acrobat 7.0 family offers different functionality to address specific customer workflows. Acrobat 7.0 Professional provides more advanced control over engineering and design documents for technical and creative workgroups that rely on specialized software such as CAD and publishing applications. Acrobat 7.0 Standard is ideal for business professionals in organizations of all sizes, where the ability to effectively find, use and manage vital information -- from emails and Web pages to everyday application files -- is key to getting work done on time and budget. Acrobat Elements is a license-only product that allows enterprises to put Adobe PDF creation capability on every desktop for more secure document distribution.
Adobe also announced Adobe Reader 7.0, the company's free, universal client software. The product, which continues to deliver on the ability to reliably view and print Adobe PDF files across various operating systems, hardware and mobile device platforms, now offers more powerful capabilities, as well. Adobe Reader users can participate in document reviews, have Yahoo! Search capabilities at their fingertips and can interact with 3D objects placed in PDF. The product is also the client for intelligent document services, enabling individuals to participate in business processes, interact with many types of specialized content more securely on- and off-line, and enforce security and control policies on PDF files. Adobe has distributed over half-a-billion copies of Adobe Reader since its 1993 introduction.
Acrobat 7.0 Professional and Acrobat 7.0 Standard for Microsoft Windows 2000 (with service pack 2), Windows XP Professional, Home and Tablet PC Editions, and Mac OS X v10.2.8 and v10.3, are expected to ship in English by the end of the current calendar year, and in French, German and Japanese in early 2005. Acrobat 7.0 Professional is expected to be available for an estimated street price of US$449. Registered users of Acrobat 4.0, Acrobat 5.0, Acrobat 6.0 Standard, or Acrobat 6.0 Professional can upgrade to Acrobat 7.0 Professional for an estimated street price of US$159. Acrobat 7.0 Standard is expected to be available for an estimated street price of US$299. Registered users of Acrobat 4.0, Acrobat 5.0 or Acrobat 6.0 Standard can upgrade to Acrobat 7.0 Standard for an estimated street price of US$99. The products also will be available through Adobe's Open Options licensing programs.

"DVD Studio Pro 3: In the Studio" Released by O'Reilly
The highly sophisticated yet easy-to-use DVD Studio Pro 3 allows independent filmmakers, video producers, trainers, event videographers, and enthusiasts to create professional-grade DVDs on the Mac. "DVD Studio Pro 3 can make quick work of simple projects, yet still enable you to build some of the most complex discs available today," says Marc Loy, author of the new "DVD Studio Pro 3: In the Studio" (O'Reilly, US $44.95). Loy claims that admiration of the DVD Studio Pro 3 application drove him to write the new book, which aims to be the definitive guide to DVD authoring with Apple's program. "I was impressed-- really impressed--with the amount of control creative professionals had over DVD creation with DVDSP," says Loy. "And I was impressed way back in version 1.5. Things only got better with 2.0 and 3.0."
Written for both the intermediate DVD Studio Pro user and the experienced video professional, "DVD Studio Pro 3: In the Studio" helps readers fully understand the process of creating DVDs from start to finish. It's ideal for Macintosh ProApps developers--those who use Final Cut Pro 4 and Shake 3--as well as for "pro-sumer" and professional filmmakers who wish to transfer their projects to DVDs. "To take full advantage of DVDSP, you need other applications like Final Cut Pro and Photoshop," says Loy. "We aimed the book at folks who know digital video and want the best possible way to present and distribute their productions. But since Apple puts so much power in everyone's hands," Loy adds, "we tried to fill in the details for newcomers who have the time and energy to make their home videos, wellââ¬Âœsomething better than your average home video!"
With full color illustrations throughout, this highly visual tutorial covers the protocols involved with the DVD files and filesystems; pixel aspect ratio issues; common "gotchas" using both still and motion media; importing from Photoshop and Final Cut Pro; effective looping of video and audio; adding multilingual menus and subtitles; encoding rules for DVDs; mass duplication; and more. The book explores most everything readers need and want to know, including how to:
-Master the DVD Studio Pro user interface -Storyboard your DVDs
-Understand how to prepare and import assets for DVD authoring
-Use the library of templates with DVD Studio Pro to simplify authoring -Work effectively with timelines, transitions, and subtitles
-Understand the myriad of DVD formats and features -Create and mix Dolby Digital 5.1 audio
-Design and create effective menus, including motion menus and advanced, scripted behaviors
-Create an internationalized DVD
-Understand the DVD Studio Pro scripting language
-Build and burn a DVD-9 (dual-layer) disc
"The more you practice and experiment, the more skilled you'll become," Loy figures, so he delivers several dozen projects focusing on particular aspects of DVD production. The companion DVD included with the book contains both the completed projects and the raw materials to build them.
"More and more individuals and companies are using DVD as their primary means of storing and distributing video," notes Loy. "This book is ideal for those looking to make sure their projects make the most of DVD technology." As he points out, the technology is growing: "Dual-layer DVD burners are out and our book covers using third-party software to burn a DVD-9 project authored in DVDSP 3. I think the ability to make high-quality, big projects is just around the corner. Beyond that, I'm looking forward to the new DVD specs settling down so we can get more interactivity from the DVD interface. DVD Studio Pro is in an excellent position to harness that forthcoming power. Apple is clearly planning for the future of DVDs already."
With Loy's expert advice, tools, and hints, anyone can master DVD Studio Pro 3 and experience the program's powerful capabilities as they create high-impact, innovative DVDs.
