Parliant Corporation Upgrades PhoneValet for Mac OS X
Parliant Corporation has announced the availability of the first major upgrade of PhoneValet, its multi-line-capable computer telephony solution for Mac OS X. PhoneValet keeps track of your calls, dials numbers quickly and accurately, tells you who's calling and keeps you in touch with your calls while you're out. This upgrade is free to current PhoneValet owners and includes the following enhancements:
PhoneValet 1.1 supports dialing numbers directly from Apple's popular Address Book application. Additionally, PhoneValet 1.1 integrates smoothly with Apple's revolutionary iChat audio/video instant messaging program to automatically set iChat's status to "on the phone" when you're on the phone.
PhoneValet 1.1 includes the ability to dial from many third-party applications using new AppleScript and "Apple Events" dialing support. These services make full use of PhoneValet's powerful dialing rules that automate long-distance and calling card dialing. Parliant provides plug-ins and example scripts that automate dialing from FileMaker Pro applications and Microsoft's Entourage.
With PhoneValet 1.1, incoming calls can trigger AppleScripts you create. To get you started, this release includes additional scripts and samples.
Responding to customer suggestions, PhoneValet 1.1 has redesigned real-time "quick searching" and improved sorting support. Management of items is sharper, with improved export and multi-select features.
PhoneValet 1.1 supports Apple's latest operating system, Mac OS X Version 10.3 "Panther". PhoneValet's updated user interface takes full advantage of Panther's new look, and Version 1.1 includes support for Panther's new Fast User Switching technology.
"Since installing PhoneValet on my Mac G5 running Panther, this product has done everything it said it would do and more," said customer Peter Stremic. "PhoneValet makes dialing a snap and its feature set is full of options that allow complete configuration flexibility, including the ability to write custom AppleScripts. A real blessing to my office and personal productivity."
PhoneValet is a Personal Telephone Assistant built from the ground up to harness the power of Mac OS X. Instead of hiring a personal assistant, let PhoneValet screen calls, lookup and dial phone numbers and maintain your phonebook. With PhoneValet as your Personal Telephone Assistant, you can focus on the important tasks in life and work.
PhoneValet includes all required hardware and software to help you get more out of your existing telephones. No modem needed. At $129.95 (USD) Parliant's PhoneValet makes an ideal Christmas gift for anyone. Additional lines are $89.95 each. Order online at:

New FileMaker Donations Application Ships
Aiming to assist organizations boost their fund raising results and donor support base, FileMaker, Inc. announced today shipment of FileMaker Donations, a fundraising and donor management application that helps charitable organizations and other non-profits intelligently manage a broad range of donor and fund raising information. Built on the popular FileMaker Pro 6 database software, FileMaker Donations provides fundraisers with an affordable, simple to use tool for managing and reporting on fund raising initiatives and donor programs.
FileMaker also recently launched a site dedicated to assisting non-profit organizations at:
http://www.filemaker.com/nonprofit .
There are nearly 1.5 million non-profit organizations in the United States, and thousands of other informal organizations and schools that hold fund raising drives each year. According to an annual study just released by the American Association of Fundraising Counsel Trust for Philanthropy, for the first time in 12 years, contributions to the largest U.S. charities declined in 2002.
"With more organizations competing for a piece of a smaller pie, charities and other non-profits need the best tools for making their fund raising initiatives more productive both for short term success and for strengthening long term donor relationships," said John Dasher, product manager of FileMaker Applications. "FileMaker Donations is an easy-to-use solution that lets fundraising executives focus more of their time on higher value fund raising tasks and building stronger donor relationships."
FileMaker Donations is a purpose-driven fundraising and donor management application that gives organizations more effective use of existing information about their donors, volunteers and fundraising activities. FileMaker Donations is easy to install and use since no knowledge about database software is required.
"Most fundraisers already have much of the information and donor networking contacts they need for their fundraising campaigns, whether it's in a digital format or on paper," said Dasher. "FileMaker Donations increases the power and productivity of your current network of donors, volunteers, activists and clients so you can expand the network and turn more prospects into long-term donors."
The application provides several task-specific features that help fundraising managers streamline and prioritize tasks associated with fundraising and donor management.
-- Donor Networking Management
Leverage your people network so you can quickly identify "who knows
who." Powerful contact management features allow you to centralize
and manage important contact details so you can effectively
coordinate all aspects of prospect and donor communication. Working
with people you already know often leads to a "multiplier" effect,
where existing contacts provide introduction to new people, and so
on, and FileMaker Donations tracks this.
-- Volunteer Management
Organize and track your volunteer troops, their strengths and their
relationships. Templates make it easy to keep them informed,
motivated, and ready to go.
-- Communications Management
Managing a full range of correspondence and communications --
including event invitations, donor solicitations, thank you notes,
email and donor receipts -- is especially important in fundraising.
Communications templates and mail management tools make it easy to
personalize "one-to-many" correspondence and email.
-- Donor and Campaign Histories
Custom reporting features gives you a clear history of every
campaign's effectiveness, donor histories and the resources used in
fundraising events. Getting a handle on donations flow allows
managers to analyze and focus on those fundraising activities that
generate the best results.
-- No Software Maintenance Fees
Unlike many other fundraising software packages, there are no
ongoing "hidden" maintenance fees that add incremental costs to an
already challenging operating budget.
-- Works with your current business processes
As a FileMaker Pro 6 based application, FileMaker Donations supports
major Internet and data standards. Users generally do not have to
change their current computing environment or other office
applications. The application fits well with today's email
applications and other software productivity tools.
System Requirements
FileMaker Donations requires FileMaker Pro 6 and runs on Microsoft Windows XP and Apple's Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) and 10.3 (Panther).
FileMaker Donations is priced at $129.00 (U.S.) and is sold through FileMaker's Web Store ( http://store.filemaker.com/applications/ ). It is currently available in North America only and can be downloaded or purchased as a CD-ROM. Customers will also need to have FileMaker Pro 6 installed to run FileMaker Donations. For those customers who do not already have FileMaker Pro 6, there is a special price of $363.00 (U.S.) for both FileMaker Donations and FileMaker Pro 6. Volume licensing is also available.
QuickBooks: Pro 6.0 for Mac Designed for Mac Small Businesses
Intuit Inc. has announced a new version of its highly successful QuickBooks program for the Mac. QuickBooks(R): Pro 6.0 for Mac incorporates customer-driven enhancements designed to address the unique needs and work style of the Mac small business owner. This new release, part of Intuit's continuing commitment to Mac small business owners and the Mac platform, is the second annual release since Intuit's announcement last year of its multi-year plan for annual upgrades.
QuickBooks: Pro 6.0 for Mac is the easiest Mac-based solution for everyday accounting tasks, while offering advanced tools like job costing, time-tracking, estimating and payroll capabilities. The product was designed for Mac small business users by Intuit's dedicated Macintosh development team. It retains the same familiar and easy-to-use Mac interface of the previous version while offering greater data sharing capability, tools to make users more efficient and additional customization options.
The new version incorporates feedback not only from customers, but also from accountants who support Mac clients and have valuable insight and understanding of their customer's unique needs. As with the previous version, QuickBooks: Pro Edition 6.0 for Mac is optimized for Mac OS X and supports Mac OS 9.
"Listening to customers is our number one priority," said Anouk Holleran, Business Leader, Macintosh Products. "New features as well as improvements on last year's version were a direct response to what our users were telling us. Our dedicated QuickBooks for Mac team is committed to supporting the Mac small business community and we look forward to continuing to provide essential and easy-to-use products they need to run their businesses now and in the years to come."
"Mac OS X Panther's 150 new features, rock-solid stability, and ease of use, make it a perfect fit for the small business market," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "Intuit's new release of its popular QuickBooks program for the Mac, now including data bridges to Windows, makes daily accounting tasks for Mac small business owners even easier."
A key feature of QuickBooks: Pro 6.0 for Mac is the ability to easily share QuickBooks Mac data with Windows users. This two-way, seamless data interchange was the feature most requested by QuickBooks Mac users and their Windows-based accountants.* Data exchange is fast and easy. A simple menu selection converts a file for QuickBooks for Windows, which can then be transferred to the Windows machine. Conversion is also easy going from Windows to Mac: users simply open the Windows file in QuickBooks: Pro 6.0 for Mac, and the data is automatically converted to the Mac format. *QuickBooks Basic, Pro, Premier and Premier Accountant for Windows versions 2004, 2003 and 2002. Premier Contractor for Windows versions 2004, 2003.
In addition to QuickBooks' broad reporting flexibility, the program can now export reports to Microsoft Excel 2001 or X for Mac, for further customization and analysis. The exported file includes formulas for subtotals and totals, as well as formatting for font, size and color. Customers can then analyze, customize and work with others on their reports without having to re-enter data, formulas or formatting.
"QuickBooks doesn't need to be a desktop publishing program; Excel does that just fine," said Andrew Miller, (QuickBooks: Pro 6.0 for Mac beta tester) "Being compatible with Excel means that both products play to their strengths."
QuickBooks: Pro 6.0 for Mac helps Mac small business owners work smarter, by increasing efficiency and productivity tools that save small businesses valuable time. Invoices, statements and reports can easily be sent electronically using Adobe's Acrobat (PDF) format. The Email as PDF feature saves the selected item as a PDF file and automatically attaches it to an email, ready to address and send. (The feature is available only to Mac OS X customers. Customers can send e-mail using Apple Mail 1.2.5, Microsoft Entourage X for Mac (Version 10.1.0) and Eudora Version 5.2.1.)
QuickBooks: Pro 6.0 for Mac further protects against data loss by offering users the ability to automatically back up data files. Users can select the frequency of backups they want to create, and QuickBooks: Pro 6.0 for Mac will automatically save the files to a hard drive, writable CD-ROM or other medium.
QuickBooks: Pro 6.0 for Mac's additional customization options provide Mac small business owners with the flexibility they're used to on the Mac platform. The new release includes a more customizable toolbar that allows users to add and remove chosen icons representing their favorite forms. Users can now customize reports by dragging and dropping select columns and by sorting by columns.
QuickBooks: Pro 6.0 for Mac is now available for a suggested retail price of $299.95. Existing QuickBooks customers are eligible for a $100 rebate for an upgrader price of $199.95. The package can be purchased at Amazon.com, Apple Retail Stores, CompUSA, MacMall, Mac Zone, MacWarehouse, PC Connection and online from Intuit at:

SpeedTools Test Suite 1.1 Disk Benchmark & Data Transfer Test Utilities
Intech's QuickBench utilities are applications which can measure eleven different data transfer sizes under four different scenarios: Sequential Reads, Sequential Writes, Random Reads and Random Writes. The results take into account four of the following influences: drive performance, driver performance, bus capability and your drive's onboard caching capability.
QuickBench provides two ways to view your benchmark results; in a dynamic graphing presentation or in a precise numeric presentation. In addition, the QuickBench utility provides a way to save your test results as a file which can be viewed and/or printed using Apple's SimpleText™ utility.
QuickBench is universal too, in that, it can measure more than just hard drives. QuickBench can be used to benchmark just about any mounted writable volume - like RAM disks! Additionally, it is compatible with any Macintosh model that supports "drag and drop"... even a Mac Plus!
The QuickBench utilities even offer Extended tests! Extended tests measure the speed of transfer sizes between 2 and 10 Megabytes. While this is far beyond what most drives will see with real applications, it nevertheless offers an interesting look at the maximum sustainable speed your drive and computer can achieve together within your current configuration.
Please note that QuickBench's Extended tests are very different from what normally happens when other applications read from and write to very large files. When most applications access very large files, they do so by breaking up the file transfer into smaller pieces. This dramatically reduces the amount of free RAM required to access very large files. For example, if an application program wanted to read in a 100 Megabyte file all at once, it would require 100 MB of free RAM. To save memory, the application may break up the transfer into a series of 100 transfers, one Megabyte for each. This method would require only one Megabyte of free RAM to read or write the entire 100 Megabyte file.
The QuickBench testing methodology is straight forward. The smaller test sizes of the Graphic and Numeric views use multiple iterations which are averaged together to produce an accurate and repeatable measurement for data transfers for each transfer size category. We do not believe anomalous spikes or dips in transfer rates, which are characteristic of smaller data transfers, tell us anything useful about given drive. Furthermore, we also do not subscribe to the notion of an overall "average" transfer rate, because this forces the software designer to make decisions about which measurements should and should not be included in the "average." Our experience is that sustained transfers are more useful to compare one drive variable against another.
On the other hand, the Extended tests are calculated based upon a single data transfer for each transfer size category. The Extended test is highly synthetic (meaning nobody ever really transfers data in chunks this large), but is a good way to measure the maximum rate which your device can sustain. Keep in mind that in almost every instance we know of, the device driver controlling the device you are testing will break up the Extended test transfers into multiple smaller transfers. The number of chunks that the driver breaks a given transfer into and the efficiency with which a driver does this will vary and can be a useful point of comparison between different device drivers which can be installed for a given storage device.
New in this version:
Quickbench 2.1 adds "Jumbo" extended transfer sizes, bar graph view, and volume selection popup menu. Integrity 1.1 fixes memory leak which will slow test over time.
System requirements:
MacOS X 10.2 or higher for OS X products.
MacOS 7.0 through 9.2.2 for Classic products.
SpeedTools Test Suite sells for $19.95

TriCN Introduces DDR FCRAM II Interface Technology
TriCN, a leading developer of intellectual property (IP) for high-speed semiconductor interface technology, has announced the immediate availability of its DDR FCRAM II (Double Data Rate Fast Cycle RAM) interface, the latest member of the company's Interface-Specific I/O (ISI/O) product family. Based on the Stub Series Terminated Logic (SSTL)-18 interface spec, the DDR FCRAM II interface is backward compatible with the DDR FCRAM, introduced by TriCN in August 2002.
FCRAM II technology, also known as Network DRAM II, offers Random Read/Write Cycle Times similar to that of SRAMs, making it well-suited for high bandwidth applications in the communications market, such as Edge Routers, Storage Area Network (SAN) Switches and Optical Network Switches. TriCN's DDR FCRAM II includes I/Os that can be used to drive DATA, CLOCK and ADDRESS/COMMAND signals of the memories, providing a complete interface solution for designers. Maximum operational bandwidth of the DDR FCRAM II interface is 666Mb/s per I/O, the fastest available in the market today.
"As performance targets rise and geometries continue to shrink, it is becoming even more difficult for chip designers to develop highly reliable interfaces that can achieve their targets," said Ron Nikel, CTO of TriCN. "This is driving customer demand for our constantly expanding ISI/O product family. Today's release of our DDR FCRAM II product will enable chip designers to dramatically reduce the complexity of developing a dependable interface while shrinking time-to-market cycles."
TriCN has created a family of validated and complete ISI/Os that are tailored to specific interface applications. Based on generic, broadly applicable interface standards (such as HSTL, SSTL, LVDS), these products have been developed to account for the complete range of environmental constraints at the chip and system level. This enables seamless integration into chip development, and allows customers to achieve high performance targets, while reducing time-to-market. Just as important, this pre-validation of the design significantly reduces risk for IC developers. In particular, TriCN's ISI/Os are targeted towards communications, memory, and graphics applications, and include products such as DDRII-SDRAM, GDDRII, QDR-SRAM, DDR-FCRAM, SPI-4 (Phase I & II), Low Power LVDS, and HyperTransport.
TriCN's DDR FCRAM II interface is immediately available for flip chip and bond wire applications in the TSMC 0.13um process and IBM 0.13 process.

Imation and Exabyte Announce Strategic Agreement
Imation Corp. , a specialist in removable data storage media, and Exabyte Corp., a maker of tape backup systems, have announced an agreement that establishes Imation as the exclusive worldwide distributor of Exabyte brand media products. As part of the agreement, Imation will also make an equity investment in Exabyte, representing less than five percent of total equity. The total dollar value of the transaction, when fully completed, is $20 million, the majority of which is for distribution rights.
Under the agreement, Exabyte will sell all of its media products exclusively to Imation. Imation will manage the Exabyte media brand and provide sales, marketing and distribution services for Exabyte media products worldwide -- including VXA and Mammoth technologies. This partnership utilizes Imation's worldwide distribution capabilities and global customer reach to enhance the sales and distribution of Exabyte media products, particularly in Latin America, Europe and Asia, where Imation has a long-established presence and customer base.
"Imation is committed to delivering the broadest portfolio of removable data storage media to the market as we leverage our efficient supply chain and global distribution capabilities. Adding the Exabyte VXA line to our portfolio is a powerful statement of our commitment to invest in profitable growth opportunities, and we expect it to be accretive," said Frank Russomanno, president, Imation's Data Storage and Information Management business. "Leading storage OEMs, end-user customers, and distributors continue to trust Imation's industry leadership -- from technology development and manufacturing know-how to our broad portfolio and extensive customer experience -- to meet their needs for high-quality, reliable removable data storage media."
"Imation is a widely recognized business and technology leader in the data storage media market. Our relationship with Imation represents a major vote of confidence for the exciting opportunity we all see for VXA technology and the future of Exabyte," said Tom Ward, Exabyte president and CEO. "The Imation investment clearly validates the VXA format, provides capital for future product development and will help secure the VXA roadmap."
VXA Packet technology is a powerful solution for the fast growing small and mid-sized server markets that require high-capacity, high-performance data backup and disaster recovery solutions at an affordable price. The growing acceptance of Exabyte's VXA Packet Technology by VARs and major OEMs, such as IBM's selection of VXA-2 Packet Drives for its popular business class eServer lines -- pSeries, iSeries and xSeries -- was a key motivator that brought the companies together. During the last 14 months, Exabyte has signed nine new OEM agreements and enrolled more than 700 new resellers for its VXA products. In the nine months ended September 27, 2003, Exabyte reported $32 million in storage media revenues.
"We expect Exabyte media customers will experience little change in their business after a brief conversion period during which we will transition customer accounts to Imation," added Bob Ariniello, vice president of media, Exabyte's team leader of the implementation plan. "Imation will use the same product part numbers previously used by Exabyte, which will help minimize the effort to switch sourcing to Imation. We believe all of our customers will benefit from Imation's proven excellence in distribution and service."
Imation will be equipped to take orders from a select number of U.S. distributors for Exabyte media beginning November 17, 2003, with full transition expected to be complete by end of the year. For more information, visit:
