FWB Software Ships Greatest Hits Software CDR

FWB Software, developer and supplier of Macintosh storage solutions and developer of the award-winning Hard Disk Toolkit, announced today the availability of FWB's Greatest Hits - a CD containing most of FWB's Toolkit products from the past ten years.

Greatest Hits is fully loaded with past and present versions of FWB's storage utility products, including Hard Disk Toolkit, CD-ROM Toolkit, RAID Toolkit, DriveTest, and Partition Toolkit. Also included on the CD are Storage Wizard, and FWB's Windows drive cloning and restoration product, DriveUp '98.

Mark Hurlow, FWB's President said, "The idea of FWB's Greatest Hits was conceived when we received quite a few requests from consultants and support professionals for a CD that contains various versions of HDT and CDT. We liked the idea so much that we decided to expand on the concept and put all our hit products onto one CD."

Bookends 7.7.4 Bibliography & Reference Management

Bookends is a full-featured and cost-effective bibliography/reference and information management system for students and professionals.

With Bookends you can easily import references (information about journal articles, books, etc.) from hundreds of online sources. Import PubMed and Amazon references from Reference Miner by drag and drop. Import references with your browser directly from PubMed, Medline on BioMedNet, and some OVID databases without intermediary files.

Import references from EndNote, Papyrus, and Reference Manager databases. Here are step-by-step instructions.

"Scan" your manuscripts to generate finished versions ready for submission or publication, with full in-text citations and bibliographies that meet the most exacting requirements. Plug-ins let you access the power of Bookends from within Microsoft Word and Nisus Writer/Nisus Writer Express to directly format manuscripts for publication. Mellel is "Bookends-aware", with special features to manage citations and bibliographies. Bookends can also scan manuscripts saved by any word processor in RTF format.

Bookmark favorite web sites (such as PubMed, Ingenta (Uncover/Reveal), etc.) and instantly access them via your browser.

Attach any file to a reference and with a single click open it in Bookends (if it is QuickTime-compatible) or in the application that created it. This means you can, for example, search Bookends for an article and, if present on the hard disk or server, instantly open its pdf file. Pictures and graphics (figures, graphs, diagrams, etc.) are just as easily accessed.

Got an iPod? Want to take your references (including abstracts) with you? You can with Bookends.

New in this version:
• First-run installation of the Bookends add-in and template for Word X now works consistently (requires that Microsoft Office X be in the user's Applications folder).
• Adding letters after dates for an author-date formatted bibliography (e.g. 2003a, 2003b) works again.
• Journal Glossary names with accented characters correctly find a match during bibliography generation.
• The last column in the Hits Window can no longer be resized by the user (which incorrectly opened an empty and unused column).
• Import filters recognize the tag for a new reference only if the match begins on the first character of the text. This ensures that a false "tag" in the middle of the text doesn't match.
• Importing BibTeX: a closed curly bracket (right brace) is retained if it is part of a formatting instruction and occurs at the end of a field.
• Importing BibTeX: the characters '},' (without the apostrophes) are not removed on import if they are in the middle of a field.
• Setting certain options in BibTeX Preferences no longer disables the BibTeX group box.
• Commas are inserted in author names in which the surname is last when importing BibTeX references with author parsing enabled.
• BibTeX super (^{}) and subscript (_{}) codes are inserted correctly in BibTeX-formatted references.

Reference Miner 1.2.1 is a perfect (and free) companion for Bookends that uses the Internet to search PubMed, Amazon, and the Library of Congress for articles and books. Bookends users can save references and cover art by drag and drop. Download from URL below.

System requirements:
• Bookends runs natively in Mac OS X as well as Mac OS 9.x.

Bookends sells for $99.00

You can try a fully functional (but limited to 50 references per database) version of Bookends before you buy.

Adobe Creative Suite Now Shipping With PageMaker Plug-in Pack

Adobe Systems Incorporated has announced that the Adobe PageMaker Plug-in Pack is now shipping with Adobe Creative Suite. The PageMaker Plug-in Pack is a set of innovative plug-ins, templates and training materials that help PageMaker users make a quick and successful transition to InDesign CS software, Adobe's award-winning layout and design package that has established itself as a key component of the Adobe Creative Suite.

Adobe Creative Suite combines new full-version upgrades of the company's market-leading creative professional software -- Adobe Photoshop CS, Adobe Illustrator CS, Adobe InDesign CS, and Adobe GoLive CS. It also incorporates Acrobat 6.0 Professional, and introduces the innovative Version Cue(TM) file version manager. The Plug-in Pack adds essential PageMaker capabilities to Adobe Creative Suite, a complete design platform that gives creative professionals, business users and educators everything they need to publish content to print and the Web faster, more easily, and more efficiently than ever.

"Adobe Creative Suite with the PageMaker Plug-in Pack is the best way for PageMaker users to migrate to Adobe's next generation creative applications, including InDesign CS," said Jim Heeger, senior vice president of Creative Professional Products at Adobe. "Millions of PageMaker customers can now take advantage of the new levels of integration across Adobe Creative Suite components, as well as the performance enhancements and advanced design capabilities that enable our customers to push the boundaries of creativity."

The Plug-in Pack includes familiar features such as automated bullets and numbering, Data Merge, the Position tool, which works similarly to the Crop tool in PageMaker, the ability to switch keyboard shortcuts in InDesign CS to match PageMaker 7.0 shortcuts, and over 80 new professional templates, based on real world projects, created by well known designers, including: Clement Mok of The Office of Clement Mok; Roberto de Vicq of HarperCollins; and Matteo Bologna of Mucca Design Corp. The templates jump-start the process of creating corporate identity kits, advertisements and book jackets, among other design projects, helping solve the blank page syndrome by giving users a place to start.

PageMaker users also can take advantage of advanced design capabilities -- such as drop shadows, superior typographical and editable transparency controls -- through InDesign CS. Compatible with the latest hardware and operating systems, including Mac OS X Panther, InDesign CS also supports PageMaker workflows via the inclusion of enhanced versions of Story Editor and Control palette, as well as native file support for Photoshop CS and Illustrator CS assets.

"As a former PageMaker user, I am thrilled to see that Adobe has enhanced and extended some of the most-loved features of PageMaker to InDesign CS with the PageMaker Plug-in Pack," said Jack Connick, president and graphic designer, Jack Connick Creative Services. "For PageMaker users who have been waiting to upgrade to InDesign because of PageMaker features they felt they would miss, the wait is over."

Any customer who currently has a copy of Photoshop (purchased either as a standalone product or part of an Adobe Collection) can upgrade to Adobe Creative Suite Premium Edition for an estimated street price of US$749, or the Standard Edition for US$549. Estimated street price for the Adobe Creative Suite Premium Edition is US$1229 and US$999 for the Standard Edition. For more detailed information about the Adobe Creative Suite, please visit:

Linksys and Netopia Team to Offer Parental Control Services to Home Network Users

Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems Inc. and a leading provider of broadband, wireless and networking hardware for the consumer and Small Office/Home Office, and Netopia, Inc., a market leader in broadband equipment and software, today announced they have teamed to offer a Parental Control Service to select Linksys home networking customers. Linksys will incorporate Netopia Parental Controls into its flagship Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster (model number WRT54GS), which is now available nationwide at leading electronics superstores, through major online retailers, and other Linksys resellers.

"This new offering underscores our commitment to providing complete best-in-class solutions to our customers," said Victor Tsao, Vice President and General Manager of Linksys. "Netopia's Parental Control service improves the value of our products and offers parents an effective way to safeguard their families as they install broadband home networking."

The Linksys Parental Control Service provides parents a centralized, secure, flexible and easy-to-use management tool that can help protect their families from the perils of the Internet.

"As households continue to deploy broadband and Wi-Fi connections which deliver content and connectivity, a simple to use Parental Controls service becomes more important to parents who want to protect their children from inappropriate Internet content. This Parental Controls offering lets Linksys provide additional value to its customers," said Alan Lefkof, Netopia's President and CEO.

The Parental Control service uses a thin-client model, delivered on the Broadband Router, which functions as the "choke point" of Internet access going into a home. This solution automatically covers all Internet-capable devices (wired or wireless) on the home network and can deliver far stronger protection than desktop or ISP-based parental control software that is installed separately on each computer. While family-specific security functions are embedded in the WRT54GS, the core service is network-hosted in order to minimize deployment costs and offer the most robust features.

Parental Control Service Highlights

The Linksys/Netopia's Parental Control solution is the ideal home networking service delivering protection and peace of mind to broadband networked households. Advanced features include:

1 Manages access for all major Internet applications -- web
browsing, e-mail, chat, and instant messaging.

2 Enforces time-of-day and day-of-week restrictions

3 Router-based protection of all Internet-capable devices on the
home network including desktops, laptops, game consoles and
PDAs.

4 Support for popular operating systems including Windows (98,
ME, 2000, NT, and XP), Mac OS, Palm OS, Windows CE, Linux and
others.

5 Internet usage and governance based on personal profiles,
rather than devices, to reflect individual maturity levels and
needs.

6 Web site filtering based on millions of URL classifications
within 18 separate categories including, for example,
pornography or violence, which are updated on a daily basis by
an independent rating service.

7 Web site classifications can be overridden on a case-by-case
basis based on parental judgment.

8 Online reporting to monitor household Internet activities
(including Web surfing and chat), on-demand from any location
inside or outside the home network.

9 Intuitive setup and management allows any parent or guardian
to increase the safety of their household's Internet access.

Linksys will provide a 30-day trial of the Parental Control Service with the purchase of the Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster. If customers sign up for the extended service of the Parental Controls service within the first 15 days of the trial, they can take advantage of special pricing:

$24.95 for 6 months
$39.95 for 1 year
$59.95 for 2 years

For less than 10 cents a day, the Linksys Parental Control Service makes it easy for users to try to keep their families safe on the Internet, by monitoring web browsing, email and instant messaging, enforcing time-of-day restrictions, and providing complete activity reports by family member.
