smugmug 1.0 Easy To Use Photo Sharing For Mac Lovers
smugmug offers online photo sharing at its best. easy to use. unlimited photos. gorgeous galleries. amazing albums.
Photo sharing has never been this easy. The internet's best photo galleries are at smugmug. share yours now.
Most of the smugmug team uses and loves Macs too.
In addition to the standard uploader which works across all Macs, they offer a Java uploader that supports OS 9.2 and OS X, and an OS X uploader that can synchronize with iPhoto.
OS X uploader (0.99)
Unlike the Java uploader, which works inside your browser, the OS X uploader is a program you install that can be found here.
smugmug recommends using Safari to install because it auto-grabs and installs the uploader. (If using IE, you'll have to hold your mouse button down over that link, then choose Download Link to Disk from the menu that pops up.) You'll be asked for your smugmug account information when it installs.
It's a simple matter of selecting files to upload and dragging them into a window.
You can drag as many as you like as long as the total does not exceed 100 megabytes per upload. The number of files you successfully drag into the window is listed below it.
Select a smugmug gallery and click upload. That's all there is to it.
This is a candidate for release. If you find any bugs or have problems, we'd love to hear from you!
To synchronize with an iPhoto album, first create a gallery at smugmug. It needn't have the same name as your iPhoto album. Then choose an option depending on whether the names match. Click upload.
The Java uploader works best with the latest versions of Safari or Firebird, but IE usually works well too. Unfortunately, Java's user interface is un Mac-like, so prepare to wince.

Marathon Releases Vertical Rackmount for G5 Power Mac
The Power Mac G5 Apple managed to pack a tremendous amount of computing power into a surprisingly compact case. When it comes to rackmounting, though, compact can still be a bit too large.
To get around the size limitations of the G5 case, Marathon has created a rackmount solution that allows one (or two) G5s to be rackmounted standing upright.
Marathon's vertical rackmount for G5 grips the curved handles of the G5 case to lock it down. The reinforced aircraft-grade aluminum deck holds firmly without sagging, with support at both front and rear. Best of all, it installs in minutes and requires no modification of the G5 case.
Did I say "case"? Make that cases. Marathon's vertical G5 Rackmount provides for two G5 cases, standing proudly, side by side. But if you are rackmounting a single G5, Marathon's thought of you, too. With this rackmount, you can put a single G5 to either the left or the right, leaving room to stack other equipment alongside it. Or you can mount a lone G5 spang in the middle.
G5 Vertical Rackmount Features and Benefits
Heavy-duty aircraft aluminum construction
Rigid cross-bracing prevents sagging
Strong steel rear supports adjust to fit rack depths from 19" to 34"
Requires no modification of the G5 case

312, Inc. Launches LeanIndex and LeanSwap, a Powerful Personal and Social Search Solution for Windows, UNIX, Linux and Macintosh Users
312, Inc., a software development and Web services company, has announced the release of LeanIndex, a platform-independent personal search engine and LeanSwap, a free Web-based information sharing service and key component of 312's LeanOn312 Web services solution.
LeanIndex personal search engine is simple to use and finds information fast. It runs from a profile created by the user that contains keywords to look for, Web sites to search, the time between searches and how the user wants to be alerted. LeanIndex only searches Web sites the user pre-selects and trusts to keep them up-to-date with reliable news and information. LeanIndex is platform-independent and runs on Windows(R), UNIX(R), Linux(R), Macintosh(R) or any other JAVA(R) enabled system.
LeanIndex simplifies a user's ability to find what they need allowing them to make better-informed personal and business decisions. Three Twelve's LeanSwap service creates a new Web community for sharing LeanIndex search profiles, tips, tricks and ideas. "312 created LeanSwap so people searching the Internet can now find other people who have similar interests and exchange ideas, tips and Web information sources," said Brian Neilson, 312's co-founder and chief executive officer.
"LeanIndex and LeanSwap join together to introduce the concept of LeSS - 'Lean Social Searching' - by establishing a process methodology for retrieving and distributing information, the foundation of knowledge management and most importantly, knowledge transfer," said Andrew Kiolbasa, 312, Inc. Chief Operating Officer and head of product development. "The value stream map has been reduced to a single Lean process. With LeanSwap, companies can establish a community for collaboration their customers and suppliers can Lean on for timely information and knowledge transfer," Kiolbasa explained.
312's LeanIndex ends the information overload and frustration of searching the Internet. "I used to surf my favorite Web sites, page-after-page, scanning the headlines looking for pertinent information, now LeanIndex does it for me and saves me a lot of time and aggravation. It also alerts me throughout the day with breaking news and information that could impact my business," said beta tester Kathy Yurks, founder and President, All Things Environmental, Inc. "With LeanSwap for sharing search profiles and ideas, LeSS is more. I'm searching more topics and getting important data in the time I used to spend just scanning. Now I'm researching not searching and that represents real value to me and my business," Yurks added.
LeanIndex is $19.95 and available for immediate download at

BRU Server - Next Generation Mac OS X Client/Server Backup
TOLIS Group has announced BRU Server for Mac OS X, a robust native Mac OS X client/server-based backup software solution. Delivering the reliability of the venerable BRU technology, BRU Server is packed with functionality that includes: three interface options that allow flexible and fully customizable operation, Disk Staging, the ability to backup systems that are intermittently attached to the network, and virtually limitless scalability.
BRU Server offers 3 interfaces that allow specification of the backup operation to support unique business requirements. The graphical interface delivers intuitive point-and-click access to BRU Server's robust feature set. The character-based and command line management consoles provide local and remote control, and headless backup and restore operations can be managed via telnet or ssh sessions. BRU Server is also fully scriptable from the command line.
BRU Server for Mac OS X provides 100% coverage of all Mac OS X file attributes, including support of case-sensitivity under the new 10.3 Server HFS+ filesystem and compatibility with the 10.3 FileVault feature. Installation is exceptionally straightforward and is aided by the automatic recognition and configuration of client systems and tape devices.
BRU Server can write client system data to a centralized Disk Stage (D2D) attached to the server system to address today's shrinking backup windows. Staging the backup to disk first virtually eliminates the apparent backup window realized at the client system level, and provides near instantaneous access to recover client system files. Xserve RAID or JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) subsystems can comprise the Disk Stage, and the Disk Stage can be "stacked" to support parallel data streams, thereby further enhancing throughput. BRU Server also supports disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) backup operations and the traditional model of disk-to-tape (D2T).
BRU's industry-unique ability to fully verify backups in a self-contained out-of-band process eliminates the need for continued access to system disks and further minimizes the impact of backup time on overall system availability.
Hardwired client systems are increasingly being replaced by mobile systems that are intermittently attached to the network. BRU Server for Mac OS X can be configured to automatically back up these mobile systems when they are physically plugged-in, or enter into the business' wireless coverage area. Following recognition by BRU Server, these backups typically complete in a few seconds, depending on the amount of data to be backed-up following the first full backup.
BRU Server for Mac OS X is able to write multiple, simultaneous streams of non-interleaved client system data to the Disk Stage or to SCSI/Fibre Channel tape libraries containing any number of tape drives and tape cartridge slots. Additional tape support includes: native device support that eliminates special drivers, tape barcode support, tape library Autobalancing, intelligent cataloguing that supports QFA (Quick File Access) to select files contained on tape, and comprehensive monitoring tools. Able to pull single streams of data off a 2GB/Fibre configured Xserve RAID in excess of 130 MB per second; BRU Server can stream the most modern tape drive technology and assures a return on tape hardware investments made today and tomorrow.
BRU Server Basic, BRU Server Network, and BRU Server Enterprise are available to provide support ranging from two networked systems to the largest enterprise. Pricing starts at $379 USD for BRU Server Basic, Additional client licenses are available individually and in cost-effective packs of 5, 10, 25, and 100 seat licenses. Annual technical support agreements are available that provide access to expert knowledge and free updates as they may become available.
At announcement time, client system support includes: Mac OS X, all Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, HP-UX, IRIX, AIX, SCO OpenServer and UnixWare. Additional client system support is under development, including broad-based x86 Windows system support.

BRU Light Edition From TOLIS Group Delivers Reliable Backup On Standalone OS X Systems
TOLIS Group has also announced the availability of BRU LE for Mac OS X to provide ultra-reliable data backup and recovery services on standalone Mac OS X systems. Any PowerPC based G3, G4, or G5 system capable of running Mac OS X is supported by BRU LE.
"The pervasiveness of the support that Apple systems provide continues to impress us since engaging in the OS X market," says Tim Jones, president of TOLIS Group. "People are doing incredibly intriguing work on their standalone systems, and the need to protect that work is equally as important as the data contained on networked systems in large organizations. BRU LE to the rescue."
Based on the venerable BRU engine that has protected the data on UNIX systems for over 18 years, BRU LE can be operated from the Aqua compliant graphical interface, or from the command line for more customized operation. BRU LE properly backs up and restores all OS X filesystems attributes.
BRU LE for Mac OS X writes to disk-based files (D2D), and supports a breadth of target devices include those that are FireWire and USB-connected as well as all tape drive technology regardless of format. BRU LE also supports any SCSI or Fibre Channel-connected autoloader containing a single tape drive and up to ten cartridge slots. Support for Apple's SuperDrive is under development and will be provided free of charge to BRU LE customers when it becomes available.
Tapes created by BRU LE are fully compatible with BRU Server for Mac OS X, TOLIS' client/server backup solution. Should the need arise; an easy migration path from BRU LE to BRU Server is available.
BRU LE for Mac OS X is available immediately and is priced at $129. A choice of cost-effective technical support agreements is available to provide expert technical support and free updates.

NetShade 1.0.1 Internet Security Tool
NetShade is an Internet security tool which makes your Web presence anonymous and secure.
Instead of your web connections going directly to the website you're visiting, they are automatically routed through a network of Internet proxy servers. The servers on the list are contacted on a daily basis to ensure that they are online and running quickly. Each day, your copy of NetShade downloads the updated list to make sure you're dealing with a live network of proxies.
Whenever you surf the Internet, your IP address is sent to every site you visit. These sites record your IP address in a log. In a perfect world this data would be used only for statistics, Internet connection optimization, demographic information, etc. But your IP address can be dangerous information in the hands of a hacker, or worse yet an Internet marketing company! When running NetShade, your identity becomes the identity of whichever proxy server you're currently using.
Since your connection is being routed through a middle-man proxy server (sometimes located half way around the world,) there will be some slow-down in your browser. But NetShade makes every effort to serve up only the fastest and most available proxy servers to minimize any impact on speed.
The trial version will only run for 10 minutes, at which point you'll need to quit and re-open it. To get the full version, visit the Register page on the NetShade Website.
System requirements:
NetShade requires MacOS X Version 10.2 or higher.
