Classic RolleiFlex Camera Goes Small and Digital; New RolleiFlex MiniDigi Has the Look and Feel of the Original Twin Reflex Camera
Two lenses, one above the other. The hand crank lever. The shutter release. The hooded viewfinder. The exposure meter. The coal-black casing. And the RolleiFlex logo.

They're all part of a new Rollei camera that will hit the U.S. market in November. What's different from the original, a classic that has attracted the world's top photographers from its introduction in 1929 to this day, is that it's much smaller and digital.
Much as auto manufacturers who have applied modern technologies to classic designs, such as the Jaguar "S"series, Ford's Thunderbird, or the Volkswagen New Beetle, the new RolleiFlex MiniDigi has the look and feel of the original, but easily fits in the palm of your hand or pocket. Most importantly, it's a camera with features that are not only nostalgic, but also unique in the digital world.

Take the hand crank. Like its parent, the hand crank is an integral part of the camera, but instead of advancing film (which it obviously doesn't have), the Rollei MiniDigi's crank prepares the camera for the next shot. Another unique feature is the classic pop-up hood and viewfinder. The hood means no stray light gets in the way. The hood also provides a quick finder function since it can fold down to allow "see through" quick framing.

Still another nostalgic design feature that has modern applications is the square format. The square format means no shutter opportunities or valuable seconds are lost having to choose between horizontal or vertical position. You simply look downward into the viewfinder at waist level, aim, and then shoot from the waist. This results in minimal "camera fright' for portraits or taking pictures of babies or animals because the eyes of the photographer and the person don't meet. In addition, the square format doesn't force the photographer to choose between landscapes or portraits orientation.
Besides the features unique to RolleiFlex, the MiniDigi incorporates digital camera technology -- SD memory cards, white balance, fast shutter speeds, 2-megapixel sensor, LCD monitor, etc. However, it's not intended to be a full-featured digital camera.
"While the MiniDigi, because of its size, doesn't have some features like USB or flash, it does have a unique, retro styling that will likely appeal to camera buffs and consumers who want something classic, original, fun, and extremely portable," stated Dick Dischler, who is in charge of US distribution for Rollei Logistics. "The MiniDigi has really taken off in Japan where the first reaction is often 'this is really cool.'"

That's certainly my reaction. I'm a Rollei twin-lens reflex fan from way back, and used one as my main tool when I made my living as a wedding and portrait photographer 25 years ago. My old, early-'70s Rollei still works great and taked beautiful pictures, and I think the twin-lens reflex format is the best ever devised for general photography.
The new Rollei will begin shipping in early November and be available through specialty retailers. Pricing is expected to be in the $350.00 range.

Rollei Logistics based in Tokyo, is under contract with Rollei Fototechnic GmbH Germany to manufacture the Rollei Mini Digi in Japan and to distribute the camera in the U.S. The original Rollei 6x6cm was first developed in Germany by Rollei Fototechnic, and has been in continuous production since that date. The classic Rollei has established itself as one of the leading cameras for top photographers.

To make it easy for people to show and share their photos, the Verbatim Digital CD Photo Album includes Pinnacle Systems' highly acclaimed Instant PhotoAlbum LE software for organizing and burning slide shows. For added value, the complete package also includes a 10-pack spindle of Verbatim premium-quality 2-4x Rewritable CD-RW discs, Verbatim's unique Touchless Label Kit and 20 labels as well as an attractive CD Photo Album that safely stores up to 40 recorded discs.
The convenient, all-in-one kit will appeal to the growing number of consumers that use digital cameras to capture special memories and want to enjoy them with friends and family as quickly as possible. The kit also makes an excellent gift for new digital photo enthusiasts.
"Verbatim Digital CD Photo Album includes everything you need to produce and share events without having to shop around for all of the components," said Ron Hanafin, Verbatim Product Marketing Manager. "In minutes, you can organize your photos in a sequence that tells a story and can bring them to life by creating a multimedia slide show that you can proudly enjoy with friends and family. Then, instead of having everyone crowd around your computer monitor, you can simply take the disc out of the album case and pop it into your DVD player so they can view the show on your TV set."
With the Instant PhotoAlbum LE software, even novices can quickly turn their digital photos into captivating slide shows. Users have the option of creating their own personal slide show or selecting one of the ready-to-use templates. The software supports importing digital photos from most devices, including digital cameras; flash memory cards, including Verbatim SD and Compact Flash Cards; CDs or a hard drive. Basic editing tools are also included that make it easy to crop, rotate and resize the photos. Then, for a professional look, slide shows can be customized by adding background music or narration. A real-time preview window is included so users can view their results at any time and can try out different enhancements.
After creating the slide show, the same software can be used to burn it to one of the Verbatim premium-quality CD-RW discs included with the kit. The Video CD discs are compatible with most popular DVD players in use today.
Digital CD Photo Album users can then personalize the recorded disc using the Verbatim Label Kit. The Label Kit comes with Verbatim's proprietary Touch-Less application system which enables users to neatly and securely center the label on their CDs without touching the label adhesive. The kit also includes 10 labels, 10 inserts and Label Design Software with more than 1,500 background images and clipart images that make creating and printing personalized disc labels fast and easy.

"Spam Kings" Released by O'Reilly
At one time, spammer Davis Wolfgang Hawke grossed more than $600,000 per month selling herbal male enhancement products over the Internet. His customers came from all walks of life--CEOs, mutual fund managers, soldiers, housewives, landscapers--in other words, people who should have known better. Most people consider spam to be at least an irritation; many consider it to be more: a scourge, a significant drain on resources and money, a violation of the sanctity of one's personal computer, even an assault against one's moral sensibilities.
With spam making up more than sixty percent of today's email traffic, it is indeed a problem, but is the problem solely the fault of the spammers? Brian McWilliams, author of "Spam Kings: The Real Story Behind the High-Rolling Hucksters Pushing Porn, Pills, and @*#?% Enlargements" (O'Reilly, US $22.95, hardback), explores the shadowy world of the people responsible for today's junk email epidemic. McWilliams reveals the motivations and practices of the people who fill our email in-boxes with spam, but he also points out, "Hawke's customer list just underscores one of the key issues of the book. Spammers are willing to put up with all sorts of wrath and attacks because they honestly believe customers want what they have to offer."
McWilliams, an experienced investigative journalist who gained international attention in 2002 when he wrote about the contents of Saddam Hussein's email in-box for "Wired News," offers a fascinating account of activities of spam entrepreneurs in search of easy money. He chronicles the careers of several spam kings, including Hawke, the notorious Jewish- born neo-Nazi leader. The book traces this twenty-year old neophyte's rise in the trade, which would make him a major player in the penis enlargement pill market--and eventually a millionaire and the target of lawsuits from AOL and others.
"Like a lot of people, I get tons of junk email," McWilliams explains. "But in May, 2003, I was deluged with over one hundred spams for pills from the same company, all in a two-week span. I managed to trace the messages to a firm in nearby Manchester, New Hampshire. I discovered spammers practically in my backyard, and I decided to tell the world about it."
"I set out to write about the dozen or so spammers whom I thought were the best representatives of this strange species," McWilliams continues. "But in the process of researching the book, I was surprised to learn how interconnected many of them were. There's definitely less than seven degrees of separation between the spam kings--and sometimes even between the spammers and their antagonists, the anti-spammers."
In addition to Hawke, McWilliams introduces readers to other bizarre denizens of the spam underworld, including Sanford Wallace, one of the original spam kings, who insists that spam is a First Amendment right; Jason Vale, the champion arm-wrestler and cancer survivor whose spam messages promote Laetrile as a cure for cancer; Alan Moore, known as Dr. Fatburn to his diet-pill customers; Rodona Garst, middle-class, white-collar suburbanite by day, running stock pump-and-dump scams in her spare time; and a fascinating assortment of others.
But "Spam Kings" isn't just about spammers; it also tells the story of anti-spam cyber-activists, like Susan Gunn, a computer novice in California whose outrage led her to join a group of anti-spammers. McWilliams reports that in September 2004, the FTC recommended that Congress consider creating a bounty system for people who help catch spammers. Says McWilliams, "At present, anti-spammers hunt down spammers as unpaid volunteers, but that could change if Congress decides to put a bounty on a spammer's pelt."
In June, 2004, McWilliams notes, "AOL revealed that one of its employees had sold AOL's entire member database to spammers. One of the people who bought that list was Davis Hawke, the central figure of 'Spam Kings.' Hawke's partner, Brad Bournival, was the unidentified source who cooperated with law enforcement and enabled them to arrest two men in June for the theft. The case is still pending, with indictments due any day."
McWilliams acknowledges that there are much bigger problems in the world than spam, "But on the Internet, it's arguably THE biggest problem, since junk email is limiting our ability to communicate, and communication is the whole point of the Internet." McWilliams believes that eventually technology will reduce spam back to a minor nuisance. "But in the meantime," he says, "the root of the spam problem is people; specifically, the folks who buy from spammers. There's a big market out there of what I call 'furtive shoppers'--people who want convenient, anonymous access to shady products like porn, fake Rolex watches, drugs without prescriptions, cable de-scramblers, and 'free' government grants."
"Spam Kings" sheds light on the technical sleight-of-hand--forged headers, open relays, harvesting tools, and bulletproof hosting--and other sleazy business practices that spammers use; the work of top anti-spam attorneys; the surprising new partnership developing between spammers and computer hackers; and the rise of a new breed of computer viruses designed to turn the PCs of innocent bystanders into secret spam factories.

SilverFast HDR STUDIO 6.4.0r3 48-bit Enhancement Tool
SilverFast HDR Studio is an enhanced version of SilverFast HDR with new features, that make the processing of your digital images much more easier and convenient:
Beginners and professionals will appreciate the intelligent automatic functions as well as the possibility to manually adjust the image at any point. Since any operation can instantaneously be undone, the beginner can easily get aquainted with the software's interface. The professional user can adjust any operation via numerical input and can precisely monitor the results using a densitometer. The unique workflow guidance with ScanPilot helps the novice user to follow the optimum workflow to get to a brilliant image right from the start.
AACO - Auto Adaptive Contrast Optimisation
SilverFasts AACO is an excellent tool for the correction of dark, high-contrast areas of the image while preserving the details in the highlights. It operates automatically when selected, but can also be manually manipulated. The intensity and the complexity of the shadows that are to be lightened can be adjusted without affecting the highlights of the image.
The Clone Tool
A powerful 16-bit Clone Tool which extends the previously implemented SRD function has now been developed. By this, major defects and severe scratches on the image may easily be removed or corrected. Furthermore, entire areas of the image may be removed, retouched, altered, etc. For example, SilverFast may now be used for complex catalog production - without the need for additional imaging programs or tools.
Unsharp mask PLUS
The USM dialog and its preview windows may now freely be resized and enlarged. This can be done by click dragging the lower right corner of the window. Now, a better control of the image is achieved before scanning that allows a much larger preview of the final sharpening effects.
Automatic image import with re-naming function
This new function of the SilverFast Studio versions allows the direct import of images into the Virtual Light Table (VLT). Special tags may be added to the EXIF or IPTC lists. Furthermore, meta tags within the EXIF and IPTC lists are administered at ease. The re-naming of images can be done while unloading them or at another time, via previously saved image files.
Conversion of RAW-Data
SilverFast allows a quick conversion of RAW-Data files in the background. This is done by choosing the images to be converted in the overview of the Virtual Light Table VLT, and dragging them into an Album. The user can decide on his own if and when the conversion of the selected Album should take place.
JPEG 2000 support:
The support of the JPEG 2000 format enables SilverFasts strongest compression to process such data 3 to 7 times faster than Photoshop. In combination with SilverFasts HiRePP function, even 3GB files may be compressed and re-opened very quickly. It is important to note that Photoshop internally calculates with 15 bit, while SilverFast uses true 16 bit
The extended print dialog of the Virtual Light Table VLT
For each image, texts from the meta tags of the IPTC or EXIF lists may be selected and added above, beside or next to the image. If the image is moved, the text is as well. The print menu in the Virtual Light Table (VLT) contains not only the possibility to print contact sheets of Albums or printing an overview, but also includes the advanced printing dialog for printing out a selection of images from an Album or from the overview. The images can be scaled, rotated or cropped. The images can be positioned automatically or manually on the print sheet. That allows an optimized positioning to save paper and costs. Additionally, ICC profiles and rendering intents can be individually selected in the extended print dialog. Rendering intents are color conversion methods for a specially defined color conversion of two different gamuts.
Main highlights are:
Real-Time Correction on large Preview
Auto-Adjust with Artificial Intelligence
Selective Colour Correction
Predictable Colour with CMYK Softproof
ICC Colour Management with IT8 Calibration
Unique LAB Unsharp Masking
RGB to RGB soft proof
SRD Dust & Scratch Removal
ACR Adaptive Color Restoration
SC2G Selective Color to Gray#
GANE Grain & Noise Elimination
MidPip4 Remove Multiple Color Casts
QuickTime Movies
JobManager included

Import all your stuff onto your digital shelves using your Apple iSight, the wireless barcode scanner, or just your keyboard.
Quickly importing your stuff into Delicious Library doesn't require a dedicated barcode scanner - you can use any QuickTime-supported digital video camera, like your Apple iSight. Just hold the barcode on the back of any book, movie, CD, or video game in front of the camera and your item magically shows up on your digital shelf seconds later. Using the same technology found in $800 industrial-strength CCD barcode scanners, Delicious Library reads every single frame of digital video; seeking out, targeting, and instantly decoding any visible barcodes. This results in a seamless process of scanning that lets you import about 750 items an hour (assuming you can move your arms that fast). At that rate the staff of the new downtown Seattle Central Library could import all of their 1.4 million books into Delicious Library in just over 5 hours.
Delicious Monster doesn't sell iSight cameras, but you can buy one from your local Apple Retail Store or at the Apple Online Store. An iSight can also be used for much more than barcode scanning - you can use it to video conference with friends, set up a webcam online, and even play interactive games.
If you have tons of items, or don't want to have to take your items to your computer to scan them in, check out our wireless scanner.
If you have tons of items, or don't want to have to take your items to your computer to scan them in, check out our wireless scanner.
If you're a serious collector (or seriously love cool gadgets), check out the Flic Wireless Laser Barcode Scanner. This scanner connects wirelessly (via Bluetooth) to Delicious Library to look up barcodes as you scan them off your shelves. You can wander around your house (up to 50 feet away from your computer) scanning everything in your library, instantly importing items into Delicious Library as they are scanned, without being tethered to your machine. If Delicious Library has trouble looking up a barcode you will be notified immediately with a spoken message, letting you go back and figure out what's wrong (and fix it). And, if you wander outside the 50-foot wireless range, no worries: the scanner's on-board memory will automatically kick in and record up to 500 unique barcodes. When you walk back into range (after, say, scanning your collection upstairs) Delicious Library connects to the scanner and imports all the stored barcodes. This gives you a wireless barcode scanner with a virtually unlimited range. You can scan all your stuff no matter where it is located. No cords, no limits.
If you want the absolute best experience importing your library, the Flic Wireless Laser Bar Code Scanner is definitely the way to go. It scans barcodes quickly and accurately, and it works well in low light conditions. You can buy the Flic wireless scanner directly from us when you buy Delicious Library, for about the price other companies sell bulky, low-quality, corded, CCD (non-laser) barcode scanners without decent software.
If you have a small library, or you're just getting started, you don't have to invest in an iSight or a dedicated barcode scanner. To get your stuff into Delicious Library, all you have to do is type in the titles (or the UPCs) from your books, movies, CDs, and video games and Delicious Library will instantly fill in all their details and covers for you.
If you've got hundreds of items to import you should look into buying an Apple iSight or the Flic Wireless Laser Barcode Scanner; it'll save you a ton of typing and it's a heck of a lot more fun.

.com Solutions Inc. Releases FmPro Migrator 2.35 Enterprise Edition for MacOS X and Windows
.com Solutions Inc. Releases FmPro Migrator 2.35 Enterprise Edition for MacOS X and Windows - New Release Adds Repeating Fields Extraction Feature for FileMaker to MySQL Database Migrations.
.com Solutions Inc., a developer of multi-platform database migration and development tools, has released FmPro Migrator 2.35 for MacOS X and Windows with a new repeating fields extraction feature for FileMaker Pro to MySQL migrations. Another new feature which has been added is the generation of Perl CGI scripts for FileMaker 7 database migrations.
Many FileMaker databases include non-relational data elements called repeating fields. These fields store multiple values within each field and are associated with the main database record by the FileMaker database engine. Manually extracting these repeating fields into a relational database structure can be a time consuming and error-prone process. FmPro Migrator easily extracts FileMaker repeating fields into a separate database table in which the records are related to the main table by the primary key. Each iteration of a FileMaker repeating field is inserted as a new record within the repeating fields table.
FmPro Migrator standardizes and automates FileMaker database migration procedures including data type matching, field to column renaming, table creation, FileMaker field size determination and data transfer for 8 different database servers. Supported databases include MySQL, Oracle (8, 8i-9i, 10g), Access, SQL Server, Sybase, DB2, PostgreSQL and FrontBase.
FmPro Migrator Features include:
-- Repeating Fields Extraction to MySQL - Data from FileMaker repeating fields is now extracted into individual records within a repeating fields table related to the primary database table. Any number of non-container field repeating values are easily extracted to the child table and related to the primary table record by the primary key. Differing numbers of repeating field values are supported for each individual record within the primary database table.
-- Repeating Field Table Creation SQL Code Created Automatically - Table creation SQL code is automatically generated for each repeating field within the FileMaker database. Each repeating field table also includes primary key and foreign key constraint code to insure data integrity.
-- MacOS X and Windows Compatibility - FmPro Migrator runs on MacOS X and Windows, thus enabling developers to use their preferred platform for creating the migration scripts.
FmPro Migrator is available for MacOS X and Windows. A free demo version of FmPro Migrator may be downloaded from http://www.fmpromigrator.com/downloads/index.html For more info see: http://www.fmpromigrator.com/products/fmpro_migrator
