Terra Soft Ships G4 ATX Workstation

Terra Soft Solutions, Inc., developer of integrated Power Architecture Linux solutions, announces a VAR relationship with Genesi for provision of the Open Desktop Workstation with Yellow Dog Linux pre-installed.

Kai Staats, co-founder & CEO of Terra Soft Solutions states, "This is an exciting engagement for Terra Soft, perfectly timed given recent shifts in the market place. What's more, the Open Desktop Workstation is small in size, inexpensive, and can be used with existing monitors, keyboards, mice, even external storage devices. Designed by Genesi to offer tight Linux integration, we are thrilled to ship a system that just works."

A well rounded, expertly designed product, the Open Desktop Workstation introduces a choice in PowerPC Linux workstations. The fully configured ODW with Yellow Dog Linux pre-installed offers a complete home/office workstation, code development platform for embedded, server, and end-user applications, as well as the traditional Linux offering of a full featured email, web, ftp, and database server.

Bill Buck, president of Genesi states, "We are pleased to have Terra Soft on-board as an official Value Added Reseller for the Open Desktop Workstation. Their Yellow Dog Linux operating system lends a level of recognized integrity, enabling the ODW to move into the hands of end-users in a more diverse market place."

The Open Desktop Workstation is based upon the Pegasos II motherboard featuring the Marvell Discovery II Northbridge and a high-performance PowerPC processor from Freescale Semiconductor of the same G4 family that ships in several Apple systems. This PowerPC processor boasts a 128-bit wide AltiVec vector processing engine that can more than double processing performance for many applications while maintaining low power consumption and heat dissipation.

"When we worked with Terra Soft last fall to produce a Yellow Dog Linux Board Support Package, it set in motion what is launched today, a flexible, powerful workstation with support by an industry-leading Linux distribution," said Chuck Corley, Applications Engineering Manager at Freescale Semiconductor. "The Open Desktop Workstation from Genesi represents an established platform for Linux application development, as well as a proving ground for a variety of end-user solutions on the PowerPC architecture, such as home media centers, web servers, and self-serve kiosks. Freescale is pleased to see this platform available to our customers."

The base ODW configuration is as follows:
- Low Profile Small Footprint Case
- Tower or Desktop Orientation.
- Pegasos II with 1GHz G4 processor.
- 512MB DDR RAM.
- 80GB ATA100 Hard Disk.
- Dual-Layer DVD¬Ã‚±RW Drive.
- ATI Radeon 9250 graphics card.

... built upon the Pegasos II motherboard:
- Micro ATX form factor (236mm x 172mm).
- OpenFirmware (IEEE1275) boot interface.
- Marvell Discovery II (MV64361) System Controller.
- G4 PowerPC CPU.
- 184-pin 266MHz DDR RAM sockets.
- 1x AGP slot.
- 3x PCI slots with riser connector.
- 2x ATA100 IDE Channels.
- 3x IEEE1394 ports (400Mbit).
- 3x USB 1.1 ports (12Mbit).
- Gigabit and 10/100 Ethernet.
- AC97 Audio Subsystem.
- IrDA, Serial, Parallel, and PS/2.
- Floppy drive connector.

The Open Desktop Workstation grants PowerPC what has been common place in the Lintel market for years: an inexpensive Linux platform built upon industry standards that meets the price-point and needs of a diverse set of end users.

Diskology Introduces New 12'' Cables for Ultra Portable Disk Jockey Hard Drive Duplicator

Diskology, Inc., manufacturers of the award winning Disk Jockey (Editor's Choice Award, Mac Addict Magazine April 05), the world's smallest hard disk duplicator, diagnostic and backup device, announced today the release of longer 12" cables designed to help Disk Jockey users get to hard-to-reach drives such as those mounted inside of a PC or Macintosh computer.

The Disk Jockey has been called "a dream come true for any PC hobbyist or technician" -- Computer Power User, Oct. 04 and has been deemed "a worthy addition to the IT professional's toolbox" -- Macworld, December 04. MacAddict magazine called it "geekily cool and useful."

"We're trying to make our customer's jobs easier" said Diskology CEO, Tony Overbay. "Many are copying hard drives that are already out of the machine. In forensic examinations and new systems deployment scenarios, for example, a large percentage of our customers must first remove an internally mounted drive from their computer before making a sector-by-sector copy, testing or erasing a drive. With the new cables customers can hook the device directly to the drive mounted in the PC."

The Disk Jockey is a Swiss Army Knife of a product. It can be used on Microsoft Windows or Apple Macintosh computers or as a stand-alone device. The Disk Jockey mounts IDE hard drives via USB 2.0 or Firewire (IEEE 1394) as well as mirrors, spans, copies, compares, tests and erases hard drives using either a 1-pass or a 3-pass erase per the National Security Administration (NSA) guidelines. The Disk Jockey can copy drives containing virtually any operating system, including: NTFS, FAT 16, FAT 32, HFS, HFS +, SCO/Unix, Linux, SUN Solaris and proprietary operating systems.

The Disk Jockey works with serial ATA (SATA) devices with the addition of a SATA adapter available via the Diskology web store. The Disk Jockey retails for $349, the 12" cables for $15. More information on the Disk Jockey or on Diskology, Inc., can be found at:

RBrowser 4.0.8 Graphical FTP, SFTP, SSH client & sync engine

Remote Browser version 4 provides access to files on the local host as well as remote systems with an easy-to-use graphical interface. RBrowser provides secure File transfers as well as Folder Sync that preserves HFS Metadata.

â—Š Folder Synchronization: local-to-local and local-to-remote using any protocol. If folder sync's target is a local or remote Mac with ssh access, fork/type/creator data is preserved!
â—Š Retains fork data, type/creator and attributes on Mac-to-Mac transfers.
â—Š Automatic detection protocol capabilities on the remote host - no need to know whether to use FTP, SFTP or SSH, just leave it on "Auto" and let RBrowser figure out the best protocol to use.
â—Š Definitely faster in all protocols and operations.
â—Š Protocol independent transfers - remote-to-remote transfers between any hosts.
â—Š Intelligent combining of ssh/sftp for optimal performance to get the best of the secure world - no longer have to decide which protocol is better for file operations or transfers.. RBrowser's intelligent sftp/ssh protocol layer picks the optimal tool for the job for you automagically.

Who is RBrowser for? Anybody who has accounts on remote UNIX systems of whatever flavor, or on any host that has an FTP server. Working on documents, managing files over the network can be fairly painful, especially for those who are not experts in the cryptic UNIX shell commands. If you work on remote systems or have to move files back and forth often, RBrowser can make your life a lot easier. RBrowser provides an easy way to manage and edit your HTML pages on the directly on the remote WEB host. RBrowser provides connectivity with FTP and SFTP. Maintain your web pages and sync the changes with a single click! Backup your important files using the Folder Sync Engine in RBrowser.

• RBrowser is a full featured free graphic FTP-SFTP client. RBrowser allows the user to manage/browse files on the remote host with an easy-to-use graphic interface. File management includes move, copy, duplicate, compress, delete, set permissions, make links, etc...
• Remote Editing, Folder Synchronization.
• Entire file trees can be moved between local and remote host, or between remote hosts by simple drag & drop.
• Remote-to-Remote File Transfers between any hosts, regardless of protocol
• Run Any number of operations simultaneously.

Here is what other SFTP clients do: simply connect to an SFTP server and use whatever is available under that protocol. However SFTP has serious limitations:

• No metadata: SFTP is not Fork/Finder info aware
• No Recursive commands: SFTP does everything file-by-file, which takes a long time if it operates on a big file system.
• No Direct Remote-to-Remote transfer
• Cannot reach hosts behind a firewall
• Cannot copy files between folders on the remote host, so file management is problematic.

RBrowser combines all the secure tools available on both the local and the remote system. The SFTP, SSH , DITTO , the Bourne Shell, and SCP clients are all part of OSX. Other UNIX systems do not have DITTO but have the rest. Each have their strong points and their limitations as well. SFTP is better for file transfers because unlike scp it can hold a continuous connection and create links. Ditto is used if both hosts are macs, so fork data is preserved during file transfers. SSH is used for file operations on the remote hosts, since SFTP has major limitations: for example it cannot make a copy of a file from on folder to another on the remote host! Also, SFTP does everything file-by-file, which takes a long time if it operates on a big file system. ssh, using a remote shell can do recursive file operations like rm, chomod very fast. Direct remote-to-remote operations require SCP. RBrowser automatically selects the best available tool for the job, so you do not even have to think about it.

New in this version:
• Stability bugfixes
• Redesigned Inspector panel, single pane featuring octal number entry for permissions.
• Bugfixes to enable connecting to non-english linux hosts

System requirements:
Mac OS X 10.4 or higher

RBrowser sells for $35
