Datacolor and Pantone Debut COLORVISION Spyder2 Color-Management Technology

ColorVision, the digital imaging unit of Datacolor, and Pantone Inc., the global authority on color, will unveil COLORVISION Spyder2, the next generation of affordable color-management technology, at the Photokina International Trade Show in Cologne, Germany, on Sept. 28, 2004, and at GRAPH EXPO in Chicago on Oct. 10, 2004.

The Spyder2 colorimeter, the latest addition to the PANTONE COLORVISION product line, delivers a new level of on-screen color accuracy. The sleek, redesigned, dual-phase hardware features precise calibration and highly accurate ICC profiles for CRT, LCD and laptop displays. The new software and graphical user-interface provide ease-of-use previously unavailable in professional-level monitor calibration products.

Based on the research and development work of ColorVision's physicists, the Spyder2 state-of-the-art optical science and new light detectors deliver a five-fold increase in sensitivity. Additionally, the new filter pack system and patent-protected light baffle further increase the accuracy of on-screen color measurement. Improvements to the calibration software utilize sophisticated gray-balance and tonal-response algorithms to produce superior color images, including exceptionally smooth gradient steps, life-like flesh tones and neutral grays.

The original Spyder system leveraged the first screen-calibration software to implement integration with ICC-compliant applications such as Adobe Photoshop -- and did it at an affordable price-point. Now, Spyder2 makes the process easier and more accurate while maintaining cost effectiveness.

"Monitor calibration doesn't have to be expensive and complicated and a process mastered only by color experts," stated Richard Herbert, president of Pantone. "Continuing our tradition of providing the best technology at the best price, the improved Spyder2 and its software's enhanced wizard walks the user through the calibration process for superior results."

"The new engineering and technology we employed in Spyder2 anticipates the rise in technical expectations and is designed to meet the continuing acceleration of growth in the photo and imaging markets with affordable, precise, color monitor calibration," remarked Brian Levey, vice president of ColorVision. "Spyder2 shows that ColorVision and Pantone listen to our customers and are once again first-to-market with the latest technology. As always, our products are based on design excellence and backed by superior customer support."

For power users, Spyder2PRO software delivers a wide range of advanced features such as improved white-point correction routines, automated black and white luminance adjustments, and an improved methodology for loading calibration data at start-up. A Profile Chooser makes it easy to select and change profiles. Additionally, multiple monitor calibration support can be achieved for both Macintosh and Windows systems.

Spyder2 will debut at Photokina in Cologne, Germany, Sept. 28 to Oct. 3, 2004 at the ColorVision booth in the Professional Imaging Hall #14.2, Aisle L, booth No. 040. It will also be available at GRAPH EXPO in Chicago, Oct. 10 to Oct. 13 at the Pantone booth, No. 5431. Spyder2 can be purchased from Pantone and ColorVision at:

Turning Microsoft Outlook, Apple iCal Into Dollars and Cents

Small Town Software has released Time and Budgets version 1.2, the latest version of its web-based time tracking and budget monitoring software. This new release features seamless connectivity for Microsoft Outlook users (previously enjoyed only by Apple iCal fans), new tools for data export and MYOB integration, as well an upgraded CORE report engine. With this release, tracking and billing for time is now as simple as keeping your appointment book up-to-date, with no additional software required. Time and Budgets enables users to seamlessly convert their appointment calendars to dollars and cents, monitor project budgets, and print time sheets.

Time and Budgets version 1.2 enables Microsoft Outlook users to enter appointment and project data into only one software application, eliminating double entry, and to have that data seamlessly converted to useable billing information. Data can now flow easily from Outlook through to Quickbooks -- with detailed project reports, time sheets and budget alerts made available to project managers in real time.

This release also introduces new stand-alone software "widgets" that connect to the Time and Budgets network and display project information in unobtrusive translucent windows -- presenting information to project managers in the form of a project dashboard. "TaBulator widgets allow important project information to be visually available at all times, even as part of a user's desktop..." says Small Town's C. Scott Gilbert, "This gives our users a virtual dashboard showing the status of important projects, and project budgets, in real time."

The new TaBulator [projects widget displays a handy project number reference -- useful for entering and tracking time -- with project phase names and numbers showing in convenient tool tips. A small but informative project monitoring tool can be found in the TaBulator [monitor widget, which shows detailed project financials -- including budget overruns -- in a tiny 1" by 3" square. Clicking on a project in either widget opens a web page showing detailed project information, courtesy of timeandbudgets.com. Both widgets support user selectable color themes and transparency options. Designed for the forthcoming Mac OS X "Tiger" operating system, TaBulator widgets run today using Pixoria's Konfabulator software ( http://www.konfabulator.com ).

Time and Budget's strength lies in its ability to collect time data from industry standard WebDAV data sources, and then convert that data into useful information. Fans of Apple Computer's iCal software, and now Microsoft Outlook users, can seamlessly convert their appointment schedule to dollars and cents. Any calendar program that supports the WebDAV format (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) will work with Time and Budgets, though for seamless data input a WebDAV server is required (and is provided, if needed, for a nominal charge).

Reports available in Time and Budgets include time sheets with visual time charts, project reports (including details about time logged to individual phases and tasks), and aggregate workgroup reports. These workgroup reports enable a business owner, team leader or project manager to keep tabs on accumulated time for multiple people.

Time and Budgets allows you to create multiple budgets for each project, combine selected budgets, and use them to generate email-based alerts when a project has reached a financial goal -- such as "when 50% of the budget has been consumed."

This product is web-based, sports a clean and attractive user-interface, and supports 128-bit encryption to keep your data secure.

Two versions of Time and Budgets are available:

- a no-hassle, low-cost "hosted" version (your data hosted at timeandbudgets.com) is available for $15 per user (volume discounts apply)

- a server-based version (for your company's private intranet) is available for $4,900

Time and Budgets version 1.2 is a free upgrade. Downloads and more information can be found online at:

Verizon Wireless and Lucent Technologies Launch EV-DO Data Services in Additional U.S. Markets

With Monday's upcoming expansion of Verizon Wireless' third-generation (3G) wide-area BroadbandAccess network to include 14 major metropolitan areas and 24 airports across the United States, Verizon Wireless is offering its enterprise customers mobile high-speed data services that are changing the way people do business. Developed with a range of users in mind, the BroadbandAccess network allows large enterprises, small-medium businesses and mobile professionals to conduct business anytime, anywhere in the BroadbandAccess coverage area via a secure, true high-speed data connection with typical user download speeds of 300-500 kilobits per second (kbps).

The BroadbandAccess network is based on CDMA2000 1xEV-DO equipment, software and services provided in part by Lucent Technologies

Beginning Monday, the BroadbandAccess network will be available in Atlanta; Austin, TX; Baltimore; Kansas City, KS/MO; Los Angeles; Miami/Fort Lauderdale, FL; Milwaukee; New York; Philadelphia; Tampa, FL and West Palm Beach, FL., in addition to Washington, DC, San Diego and Las Vegas and 24 airports from coast to coast.

Lucent, one of Verizon Wireless's primary network infrastructure suppliers, said it is pleased to support the launch in a significant number of the new markets with equipment, software and services, as well as data and research that is part of Lucent's Market Advantage Program.

"Lucent has long believed that 3G mobile high-speed data would bring tremendous benefits to businesses of all sizes," said Lisa De Laurentis, sales vice president at Lucent Technologies. "We congratulate Verizon Wireless on its launch of the BroadbandAccess EV-DO network in these markets. With service available in additional markets, Verizon Wireless' enterprise customers can access a wide range of applications, and enjoy increased productivity and efficiencies in their operations while on the go."

BroadbandAccess allows enterprise customers to access information when they are out of the office at speeds that are faster than those offered via any other commercially available wide-area wireless data service in the United States. With data transmission bursts of up to two Megabits per second (Mbps), BroadbandAccess customers can download a one Megabyte e-mail attachment (for example, a small PowerPoint presentation or a large PDF file), or receive three digital pictures (each 400 x 600 pixels) in less than 30 seconds. Customers can also use this high-speed data service to view rich graphic content, video, music and more.

"We continue to build on our strategy to provide business and individual customers superior voice and data networks in the United States," said Dick Lynch, executive vice president and chief technical officer of Verizon Wireless. "Lucent has been a reliable equipment provider, helping us deploy BroadbandAccess and expand the fastest commercially available wireless network in the nation today."

Last year, Verizon Wireless and Lucent worked together on the successful commercial launch of the BroadbandAccess service in Washington, D.C. In July 2004, Lucent and Verizon Wireless announced a $5 billion contract for equipment, software and services from Lucent that enables Verizon Wireless to increase the coverage and capacity of the high-speed, wide-area BroadbandAccess data network based on CDMA2000 1xEV-DO technology, as well as its existing next-generation voice network.
