Called Etude, it combines traditional sheet music with an
on-screen keyboard whose keys light up to reveal the position
of notes. The app also uses its own synthesizer to
simultaneously play the piece aloud. It ships with access to
an in-app music store that users can download new songs from.
"We haven't seen any apps with quite the same approach," says
Dan Grover, Etude's primary designer and a self-taught
musician. "There are a lot of game-like music apps, but it's
hard to learn much from them. We've tried to create the most
fun and engaging way for people to discover music as it's
really written and played."
Today, the songs available for download in the app are largely
public domain, but it hopes to finish negotiations with sheet
music publishers to offer users more contemporary music like
pop songs and film soundtracks. But for now, the music
selection spans everything from classical pieces like
Moonlight Sonata to nursery rhymes like The Itsy Bitsy Spider.
System Requirements:
The app runs on all models of iPhone and iPod Touch devices
running OS version 3.1 or higher. A version for Apple's
upcoming iPad tablet computer is also in the works, with a
preview available on the app's website.
