More Details Emerge On ASUSTeK’s Lamborghini Laptop

1594 The Register's Tony Smith reports:

Asus has dropped a few more hints about what's going to be inside its upcoming Lamborghini-branded notebook. The company confirmed this week that the machine will indeed be based on Intel's Centrino Duo platform, and said it will contain more than 1GB of memory and a hard drive offering over 120GB of storage capacity.

As we've previously reported here on Applelinks, the new Lamborghini Notebook Series incorporates the industrial design and styling themes of a true Lamborghini exoticar, and is projected for release in April. No photos of the whole machine are available yet, but some partial teasers in ASUSTeK's press release reveal that it's going to be a stunner.

It will be available in both red and black with Lamborghini design details and special mirror painting finish.

Lamborghini, if you're not a motorhead, has been Ferrari's most formidable competition in the exotic sports car arena for the past 40 years. As legend has it, Italian factor manufacturer Ferruccio Lamborghini bought a Ferrari in the early 60s, experienced problem with the clutch, and decided to drop by the Ferrari works at Modena for a chat with Enzo Ferrari himself about the fault. However, the great man was unimpressed, dismissing lamborghini with: "What does a tractor maker know about super cars? "You stick to tractors and let me build sports cars" Insulted and miffed Mr. Lamborghini took his Ferrari home, fixed the problem himself using a tractor clutch, and vowed to build a sports car that would out-Ferrari Ferrari.

Current models are the 2005 Lamborghini Gallardo, which sells for $173,600 - $173,600, and the Lamborghini Murcielago which will set you back $290,900 - $328,150. I trust that the Asus Lamborghini Notebook will be substantially more affordable.

Lamborghinis have always looked spectacular, and it appears that this ASUSTeK laptop will be no exception.

As I've said, I wish Apple would make an exoticar cobranded MacBook Pro. Two of the most illustrious nameplates are now contracted to PC makers (Acer has a deal with Ferrari), but there are still Bugatti, Bentley, (also both part of the Volkswagen empire), Porsche (also with close ties to VW), and Maserati, which like Ferrari now belongs to FIAT. There are also possible Formula One motor racing tie-ins with teams like McLaren Mercedes or Williams or BMW. I don't think most North Americans are aware of how big motorsport - especially Formula 1 - is in most of the rest of the world, is sport only second to soccer.

And it isn't as if Apple has never done cobranding. There have been the HP and U2 iPods for instance. How about it Mr. Jobs?
