Apple reclaims US' third biggest PC seller spot

The Register's Tony Smith reports:

Apple is now once again holding third place in the US PC market, sales figures from market watcher IDC have revealed. A return to form? Not quite, since its 5.6 per cent share is well below the double-digit share Apple commanded in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Apple was also tied for third place with Gateway, which likewise took 5.6 per cent of the US PC market in Q2. Below them came Toshiba with 5.3 per cent and Acer with 5.2 per cent. No guesses as to which companies outsold these four.....

Like Formula One racing, the interesting battle in the US PC business is not for first or second place, but who'll get the remaining place on the podium and a share of the points. Here, Apple fans have plenty to shout about...

Mac sales outpacing industry 3:1

APCMag's Danny Gorog reports:

Look Mac, our market share is shrinking! Look Mac, our market share is shrinking! The news from IDC PC Tracker market share analysis is in again and it looks like Apple had a strong quarter with plenty of growth.

IDC reports that US PC shipments grew by 7.2% in Q2 2007 while Mac shipments rose by over 26.2% year-on-year. Like it or not, that makes Apple the 4th largest vendor in unit shipments with 5.6 percent of the US market (Apple's share the same time last year was 4.8%.) 5.6% of the market puts Apple in front of other big name Wintel brands like Toshiba and Acer.....

Overall growth of the worldwide PC market was 12.5 percent..

Future Implications: Apple's complete home dominance

News.com's Don Reisinger reports:

In a report that is guaranteed to make Apple fanboys proud and Apple haters scoff, the market research firm IDC has released a study claiming that Apple has officially become the third-largest computer vendor in the United States.

According to the study, Apple shipped 960,000 units in the second quarter of 2007, and the Cupertino, Calif.-based company now commands 5.6 percent of the U.S. market--a jump of 0.8 percent from the same time last year.

On the Windows side of things, Dell, while still firmly entrenched as the nation's No. 1 computer vendor, witnessed an 11 percent decline, and HP, the country's No. 2, enjoyed 26 percent growth.

So what do all of these numbers mean to the average consumer? Not too much. But if we were to take a more well-rounded view of the news, one thing immediately comes to my mind: Apple is well on its way to dominating the home.

How to Move Your Email to Another Mac

MacInstruct's Matt Hoult says:

If you use Apple's Mail, there will probably come a time when you'll want to move your email messages and email account to another Mac. Maybe you just purchased a new Mac. Or maybe you've kept your personal email at work, and you now want to move those emails and that account to your Mac at home. Fortunately, there's an easy way to move your mail!

We'll assume that your email account is located on only one Mac, and that you do not yet have an email account set up in Apple Mail on the Mac you'll be moving your email to.

Here's how to do it:

The Widening World of Widgets

LinuxInsider's Craig Crossman reports:

Widgets aren't only for the Macintosh, although as far as I can determine, they began on that platform with a little program called "Konfabulator." Today, widgets are available for Linux and many now transcend the operating systems barrier by working on most any Web browser. These are referred to as "Web Widgets."

What's a widget? According to Widgipedia, "a widget is a small application that runs on your desktop or in a Web page. Widgets enrich your desktop or Web pages with functionary, useful information and a lot of fun."....

If you own a Macintosh running one of the later iterations of the OS X operating system, then you most likely know about Dashboard. Dashboard is the operating system's feature that runs widgets on the Mac. As described by Widgipedia, they are indeed little programs, but they differ from mainstream applications in that they are for the most part, a one-trick pony.....

The IBM ThinkPad Turns 15

The Register's Tony Smith reports:

The ThinkPad is 15... Sort of. Launched by IBM and now made by Lenovo, the black-clad laptop family quickly established itself as an icon, in many ways re-establishing Big Blue's reputation as a PC maker after years in the shadow of the clone manufacturers.

The first two clamshell-styled ThinkPads, the 700 and the 700C, were launched on 5 October 1992. Some people claim they were announced at Comdex Fall, but that took place more than a month later, on 16-20 November. Still, the new notebooks would have had their first full public outing at the show.

'Mac Worm' Hacker In Death Threat Farce

The Register's John Leyden reports:

Claims by an anonymous author that he was paid to create a worm targeting Mac OS X systems are turning into a soap opera-style farce. Infosec Sellout said his 'Rape-OSX' worm uses an undisclosed vulnerability in the mDNSResponder component of Mac OS X to spread.

Low-threat malware targeting Mac OS X systems is unusual, but far from unprecedented. Claims that the supposed author of the worm is being paid to create proof-of-concept malware lack credibility or rationale, aside from creating mischief.

Logic3 i-Station IS10 iPod Alarm Clock Review

The Register's Scott Snowden reports:

At first glance, Logic3's i-Station IS10 may seem like just another one of the infinite number of iPod accessories currently available. But actually, when you think about it, the IS10 offers the forgotten freedom of waking up to music of your chosing.

Let it sink in for a moment. Oooh, yeah... Why should we have to endure the self-indulgent, sycophantic drivel that pours forth out of the mouths of almost every DJ on air? Instead we can wake to the sounds of Beethoven's 6th Symphony - should the sunlight of a Spring-like morning stream through the bedroom window, for example. Or something more upbeat to inject a little energy into the otherwise painful process of getting out of bed: Trash City by Transvision Vamp. Perhaps something by The Prodigy, if you plan to extend that lie in and rush getting ready in the morning.
