Moore’s Omnibus Guide To Mac POP 3 Email Clients and Utilities - 2008 Edition

3254 The Mac POP 3 email client category has continued to evolve over the past year, notably with the release of several Eudora 8 public betas of the "new Eudora" being developed by Mozilla.org, to which Qualcomm bequeathed the Eudora brand after terminating development their classic Eudora email client. More about the new, Open Source Eudora application, provisionally code-named "Penelope" below. The release of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, with its abandonment of Mac OS Classic Mode support has further marginalized some of the older Mac email client software, and most ofe the newer offerings are based on Mozilla.org's Thunderbird technology.

So here's the state of Mac POP 3 email clients in 2008.

___

Mac POP 3 email clients from B to T

The email clients appear here in alphabetical order. Which Mac OS platforms they support are noted. I have used some of the applications listed, but not all of them by a long shot, so these profiles should not be construed as reviews.

With so many choices available, you should be able to find an email client that will set your needs and tastes too a "T".

___

Balzac 1.0 b29 Email Client
(OS 10.3 up)

Balzac is a relatively new email application for OS X 10.4 and above, which aims to provide a simple view on your mail whilst allowing fast, sophisticated searches of past correspondence. It has been written to utilize all the advanced services available in OS X, from the address book to the built in spell-checker.

image

The list below is a short summary of the most interesting features of Balzac.

• Dynamic views on your mail (ie 'Smart Folders')
• User defined categories - messages can be in several categories at once
• An inbox which shows you messages from the last few days
• Fast searches on header fields or text content of all messages
• Customize the way you view your mail with HTML templates for list views and message views
• Send custom HTML email using templates
• Supports Growl notifications

The latest betas move over to a new mailbox format in preparation for adding support for Spotlight searches, and also add a lot of other features, including Ruby in outgoing messages.

Mail Views
On the left hand side of the Balzac window is a list of Mail Views - mail views are analogous to folders in normal mail applications, however they constantly update to show all of your messages. The advantage of views being based on searches is that once you have set up a few views to your taste you won't need to file manually.

To see the messages in a mail view, you click on that view, just as you would a folder in another mail program - the messages matched by the view will then be displayed in the main browser window. Views which are inside other views (ie child views) search only the messages from the view above, so as you move down a hierarchy of views you will see fewer and fewer messages. You can see child views by clicking the arrow beside a view which has children. You can drag views around to reorder them, and double click them to change the title, just as you would expect.

Searching
To search the messages within a view, you can type a few words into the 'Search View' box at the top of the Browser window, and hit return to begin the search. Searches use Apple's Search Kit and are very quick, so you won't have to wait for results. You can also search on various parts of the messages - for example their date, or the from and to fields, or the flavour of the message. To do this you prefix your search terms with from:, to: etc. More sophisticated searches are also possible. Changing the search criteria for a view is a simple as clicking the 'Replace View' button.

This beta version is not limited in any way. Please report any problems with it to me at the email address at the bottom of this page. Balzac has not yet been thoroughly tested on Tiger. Support for Spotlight searches will be added in the 1.1 or 1.2 release, when I get round to them.

The latest beta fixes a few small bugs and adds detection of an internet connection after wake from sleep.

New in version 1.0 beta build 29:

• Fixed bug in whitelister dealing with numeric HTML attributes
• Removed spurious status messages in Leopard
• Worked around date parsing bug in Leopard causing inbox to display as empty

Known Problems:
• Balzac is not compatible with TypeIt4Me (an Input Method for Panther and Tiger)
• When sending via mail.google.com, you must use port 465 and turn on SSL (NOT port 587)

System requirements:
Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

System support:

Entourage 2008 For Mac
(OS X 10.4.9 up)

Entourage for Mac is a descendent of the old Outlook Express 5.x, retaining the general interface conventions, email, and newsgroups capabilities from Outlook Express, adding a personal information manager to keep track of tasks, notes, appointments, contacts, and more.

It is an understatement to say that I'm not a Microsoft software fan, but some people like Entourage. Entourage stores all messages in one huge database file - definitely not my cup of tea, too inflexible and a corrupted file (MS email databases have a reputation for being fragile and corruption-prone) means you could lose the whole enchilada if the included Database Utility fails to repair and rebuild it successfully, unlike email programs that store archives in separate, discrete mailboxes that can be opened in a pinch with a text editor. The single file motif also causes problems with Time Machine since every time the database changes (even a single email added or deleted, Time Machine interprets that as a signal to make an entirely new copy, which can be several GB in size, and backs the whole thing up every hour.

There's a new Entourage for Mac in Microsoft Office 2008, with a fresh, more Mac-like interface and a number of new features, such as a Spotlight search field in the main toolbar which replaces the former Advanced Search dialog. Entourage can save searches to the Folder List or the Favorites Bar, and Spotlight integration reportedly makes searching your message archives much faster than it was with Entourage 2004. Entourage 2008's junk mail filter has been updated as well and there's a new anti-phishing feature that blocks a blacklist of file attachments.

Entourage also has a Calendar module, supports integration with MS Exchange, and includes address book, notes, tasks, and project center modules, a new My Day companion application that lets you view your Entourage data without the main program running, including your upcoming calendar events and To Do items.

Unfortunately, in order to get Entourage you have to buy the whole MS Office suite which will set you back about $130.94 for the Home and School version if you buy it online.

Entourage System requirements:
• Mac OS X version 10.4.9 (Tiger) or a later version of Mac OS

Eudora 6.2.4
(OS X - Version 6.1 still available for Classic users)

Unfortunately, Quallcomm, which owned and developed Eudora since 1991, decided last year that an email client no longer fits their business plan, and development of the classic Eudora was terminated, with version 6.2.4 the final and ultimate Mac iteration. Qualcomm handed the Eudora name off to an an Open Source product code-named "Penelope" based on Mozilla.org's Thunderbird email client. The Open Source product, wich is currently in public beta (see separate section in this roundup) will be free to all customers.

As a longtime Eudora fan and enthusiast who has never been terribly smitten with Thunderbird, I was not enchanted with this news. I'm trying to keep an open mind, and hope that the Qualcomm press release's affirmation about "while retaining Eudora’s uniquely rich feature set and productivity enhancements" has substance, but I haven't seen much evidence of it in the Eudora 8 betas, in which Eudora's classic interface conventions have been abandoned in favor of a "three-box" (or optional "two-box") UI.

I'm continuing to use Eudora 6.2.4 as my main email client for now. It works great on my Pismo PowerBooks running OS X 10.4.11, but not so hot under OS X 10.5.2 Leopard on my workhorse PowerBook G4. However, the writing is on the wall, so to speak, and at some point in the future it can be safely anticipated that a Mac OS version upgrade will break Eudora (the OS X version of which is a Carbon port of the old Mac OS Classic Eudora which dates back nearly to the dawn of the public Internet), or some new Web standard will not be supported by the old application.

So for now I'm continuing to include classic Eudora in the Guide To Mac Email Clients and Utilities for 2008, since it remains available for download, and is still an excellent solution if you;re using OS 10.4 Tiger or an older version of the Mac OS. However, if you're running Leopard, an/or are not already a Eudora user, I would suggest adopting another email client that's still under active development. I just wish I could find one tha I like remotely as well.

System requirements:
• Mac OS X 10.0 or higher
• Eudora 6.1 is still available for download and sale for Mac Classic users.

Eudora 6.2.4 for Mac will continue to be available until a final Open Source version (see "Penelope" section below) is available.

Qualcomm has posted a compatibility note for the no-longer-being-developed Eudora email client and OS X 10.5.2 Leopard. Note that this applies only to Eudora 6, and not "Eudora" 8.

In order for Macintosh Eudora to work well under OS X 10.5.x 'Leopard', you need to turn off the use of specific sounds in Eudora. These are the sounds Eudora plays when you get new mail or Eudora needs your attention, or are played by Filters. The sounds that are problematic are the ones that contain 'Eudora' in their name as they were created using a sound synthesizer that Leopard does not support. To disable or change the sounds used in Eudora, do the following:

Turn off or change the 'New Mail' and "Attention" sounds:
• Open Eudora->Preferences and select the 'Getting Attention' panel
• In the 'Sounds' section, for both 'New mail sound' and 'Attention sound', select a sound OTHER than one that has 'Eudora' in its name (ie. NOT 'Eudora Attention', 'Eudora New Mail' nor 'Eudora Short Warning')
• Click OK to the close the Preferences

Turn off sounds triggered by filters:
• Open Window->Filters
• Look through all your filters for filters that have a 'Play Sound' action.
• Select a sound that does NOT have 'Eudora' in its name, or disable sounds all together by selecting 'None' from the action popup menu.

I've done this, and it does seem to improve Eudora performance in Leopard somewhat.

Eudora 8.0.0b3 (Penelope/Open Source Version)

As noted above, Quallcomm has terminated development of the venerable Eudora email client, and handed off future development for the brand to Mozilla.org, which is developing a new, Open Source Eudora based on its Thunderbird application.

By moving Eudora to an open source product, Qualcomm can exit the Eudora business gracefully while still supporting Eudora users and they contend - advancing the Eudora email client at a faster pace than before, through the power of the open source development community.

That remains to be seen. Thunderbird, is a better than OK conventional email client, but in my humble opinion it has never come close to Eudora in power and user experience, so I'm hoping the Penelope project can follow through successfully on its mission statement:

"The 'Penelope' project's intention is to join the Eudora user experience with the Mozilla platform. We intend to produce a version of Eudora that is open source and based on Mozilla and Thunderbird. It's *not* our intention to compete with Thunderbird; rather, we want to complement it.

"We are committed to both preserving the Eudora user experience and to maintaining maximum compatibility, for both developers and users, with Thunderbird. It is our goal to build a single development community around Thunderbird and Eudora, so that both mailers advance faster than they previously have."

The most recent beta release of Eudora, version 8.0.0b3 (which includes the Penelope extension version 0.1a22) is now available for download. Use the links below to download.

Whereas "Eudora" is a branded version of Thunderbird with some extra features added by the Eudora developers, "Penelope" is an extension (also called an "add-on") that is used in Eudora and can also be used with Thunderbird. The Eudora installer includes the corresponding version of Penelope along with it so there is no need to install Penelope if you are installing Eudora. Most features in Penelope can be accessed when used with Thunderbird, but there are a few that require Eudora in order to work correctly and it's not something that gets tested.

Sometimes in documentation there is a need to differentiate the older versions of Eudora made by Qualcomm from current Thunderbird-based versions of Eudora. This will normally be done by labeling the older versions of Eudora as "original Eudora" or "Classic Eudora".

CHANGES IN 8.0.0b3

• Includes Penelope version 0.1a22.

See:
http://wiki.mozilla.org/Penelope_Extensionsfor Penelope version notes.

Mac OS X Leopard Mail 3
(OS X)

One of the cool features in Mac OS X is a powerful email client built right into the operating system. Personally, I've never cottoned to OS X Mail, but Classic Eudora, if it appeals to you, tends to ruins you for other email applicaitons. Mail is a pretty good email client.

• Personalize messages with Stationery
You can add a personal touch to messages by applying stationery templates. In anything from invitations to birthday greetings, the templates offer professionally designed layouts, fonts, and colors. Use the new Photo Browser to find photos in your iPhoto library and add them to your messages.

Mail provides other features to help you work more efficiently:

Set up new Mail accounts in one step. Enter your current email address and password, and Mail will configure other settings for you.

Place your mouse pointer over data in messages and use Data Detectors to transform an email address into a new contact in your address book, a street address into mapped directions, or a date and time into an iCal event.

Use improved Spotlight searching to find the exact message, note, to-do item, or attachment you're looking for.

Make messages easier to read with new and richer formatting, such as bulleted and numbered lists, indentations, and background colors.

Mailsmith 2.1
[OSX 10.2 or later required; Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later recommended]

Mailsmith is an extra-strength and very expensive email client designed for Macintosh users by BareBones software, developers of the formidable BBEdit professional-grade text editor and its excellent TextWrangler freeware companion program. Thanks to its flexibility, customers can customize Mailsmith's powerful editing, filtering, and searching capabilities to suit their particular needs.

Mailsmith provides a depth of functionality that makes it an appropriate tool for both casual email users and “power users” who receive and store thousands of messages. New users will appreciate its graceful and flexible interface, and sophisticated users will find its range of powerful features indispensable from the outset.

Mailsmith 2.1 has added seamless integration with SpamSieve, integrated support for Mac OS X technologies including the Apple Address Book, integrated support for PGP 8.0, and over 150 distinct improvements.

Mailsmith incorporates the text editing power and functionality of BareBones Software's flagship product, BBEdit. Like BBEdit, Mailsmith's text editing architecture is scriptable and extensible. In short, if you like writing text in BBEdit, you'll love writing email in Mailsmith. Mailsmith's composition features include:

• Glossary -- insert frequently used text snippets with a single mouse click or keystroke.
• Quoted Text Rewrapper -- Cleans up poorly formatted messages.
• Configurable Keyboard Shortcuts -- Mailsmith allows you to change (or remove) the keyboard shortcuts for any menu command, AppleScript, Glossary item, or Plug-In.
• Multiple Clipboards

Mailsmith makes email filtering both easy and powerful. There is no limit on the number of criteria to match against or actions to take. Criteria can match against any header, the contents of the message body, as well as many other message properties. You can put together powerful, multi-criteria filters with just a few mouse clicks. Plus, filters can take advantage of Mailsmith's powerful grep pattern matching engine, which provides a Perl-compatible regular expression syntax.

Filter actions can do a lot more than simply moving messages from one mailbox to another. They can apply message labels, play sounds, and much more. Filters can even run AppleScripts.

Not only is Mailsmith a scriptable mail client -- giving you scripting access to checking mail, sending messages, and moving messages between mailboxes -- but it's also a fully scriptable text editor. Most AppleScripts written for BBEdit work in Mailsmith.

Plus, because Mailsmith is recordable, you don't have to know how to program in AppleScript to create scripts of your own. To start recording a new script, just choose Start Recording from Mailsmith's Script menu.

Mailsmith feature highlights

• Powerful filtering system to organize and process email
• Stationery and Glossary support
• Pervasive AppleScript support
• Integrated support for SpamSieve

Mulberry 4.0.8 Email And Calendar Client
(OS 10.3 up)

Mulberry is an Internet mail and calendar client supporting the IMAP (IMAP4rev1, IMAP4, and IMAP2bis) protocol for accessing mail messages on a server, and the standard SMTP protocol for sending messages. It also does many things with MIME parts to handle mixed text and different types of attachments, and supports POP3 email as well. Mulberry is back under new ownership and is now available for free.

Since November, 2007, Mulberry has been Open Source, Mulberry is Open Source. The full code for Mulberry (Mac OS X, Windows and Linux) is now available as open source under an Apache 2 License. See the Website for details.

Mulberry started off life as a software project that was really meant to help the author learn more about the internet and internet protocols used for email. However, it became much more than that and garnered support from a small (in internet terms) group of users and institutions many of whom relied on the product as their primary email tool.

Whilst it started as only an IMAP client and only on Mac OS, it has grown to cover not only other email protocols, but also calendaring and scheduling and is available on Mac OS X, Windows and Linux systems.

Adherence to standards is a key belief on the part of the developers, and active participation in the Internet Engineering Task Force and the standards process is an important aspect.

Ultimately the failure of the original company (for a whole host of reasons) was really a reflection of the fact that Mulberry had failed to grow a market share that could sustain the company in a market where free clients (of varying quality) are readily available.

Now Mulberry itself is free, though its future is still cloudy in terms of whether development will advance or not...

New in version 4.0.8:

Netscape 7.2
[OS X 10.1 up]

A blast from the past, Netscape 7.2 includes a Web browser (Navigator); HTML authoring environment (Composer); a POP 3 email client (Mail) as well as a newsreader and instant messenger, and is a potential solution for Mac OS Classic users who want a suite application that still performs reasonably well. Netscape development of version 7.x ceased laong ago and has now been discontinued for all OS types and versions as of March 31, 2008, but archived versions of Netscape are still available for download at the Web address below.

In configuration it is thus similar to older versions of Netscape, but it is an entirely new application from the ground up, based on the open source Mozilla browser.

Importing Mail from other programs is easy. Netscape 7.0 offers all-in-one import of e-mail messages, account settings and address books from other mail programs such as Eudora, Outlook and Outlook Express.

System requirements:
Mac OS X 10.1.x
Mac OS X 10.2.x and later

Minimum Hardware
PowerPC 400 MHz
G3, G4, 256 MB RAM
60 MB of free hard disk space

Netscape 7.2 is freeware.

Nisus Email 1.6.1
(OS X; Classic PPC)

One of the Mac email clients that I still use every day on my OS 10.4 machines is Nisus Email, which, in the Nisus tradition, offers features distinctly different from any other e-mail program.

Among these, the most unique are Nisus Email's ability to integrate its functions with virtually any text-crunching program, and to send chunks of dragged and dropped text or attached files with just a couple of mouse clicks.

Working from a word-processor or text editor, you have access to much wider variety of text formatting and proofing functions.

Nisus Email is one of the easiest Mac email clients to send quick messages with. After all, how hard is it to drag and drop text from any word processor or text editor to Nisus Email's contact icon and swoosh! Away it goes!

Unfortunately, Nisus Email hasn't been updated for years, and is now definitely showing its age, and doesn't support the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) required by Gmail for POP 3 support.

Integration with a word processor makes sending email from your favorite word processor ("Nisus Writer is my favorite..." repeat that over and over) as easy as saving a file. Instead of using your email client to compose messages, use your word processor.

Nisus Email also has several ways in which you can send emails from within other applications. In fact, any application that supports either Drag and Drop or file saving can be used to email a file or message. All this is done quickly and without leaving the application you are currently working in.

Nisus Email is like any standard email client in that it receives and sends email, but the similarities end there. The most noticeable difference is a tiny global window that always stays visible no matter what application you are in. This window is the main interface with Nisus Email. This means that where ever you are, Nisus Email is ready to go.

When you click the global window it will expand to fill your screen. This window displays all of your email contacts. From here you can quickly email anyone via the Quick Message Window: Just click on a contact icon, type your message, and hit send. It's that easy.

Another way Nisus Email makes sending emails easy is DragSend. When you are in any application, such as a word processor or web browser, you can select some text and drag and drop it onto the Nisus Email icon. At that point the Instant Window expands and you can see all of your email contacts. Now you can choose to either send the text immediately or edit it to your liking. When you move the mouse over the top part of a contact icon you will see an indicator that the text is to be sent directly to the contact, with no delay. If you move the mouse over the bottom of a contact you will similarly see an indicator that you will be prompted to edit the text in the Quick Message Window before it is sent. Just move the mouse over one of these options and click to activate your choice.

If you want to send a file (or a folder, or even multiple files) using DragSend, just drag and drop the file(s) onto the Nisus Email icon and click the contact you would like to send the files to. Just as with DragSending text, you can choose to either send or edit the message before it is sent. If you choose to send the file(s) immediately they are sent with a standard message (which you can customize to each icon). This standard message can even include a list of the attached file names.

Nisus Email is setup to constantly check a folder named "Dispatch." As soon as a file is placed within the Dispatch folder Nisus Email will expand the Instant Window and ask you to whom you would like to send the file to. You then click the recipient's icon, and the file is sent.

Odysseus (As Yet Vaporware)

Infinity Data Systems a full-service software and web development firm that in addition to custom software development also occasionally develops software to meet perceived needs in the market that are currently going unfulfilled, has announced that it is developing a real successor to the Classic Eudora email client that presumably will follow more closely the traditional inderface conventions than the Mozilla Thunderbird-based Eudora project is. Their Website states:

"Odysseus is the code name for the Eudora successor that Infinity Data Systems is working. We have always felt that Eudora was a best-of-breed email application for both platforms, Mac OS X and Windows. Easily one of the oldest email applications, it still offers features either not found in competing applications or, if found, not implemented as elegantly."

The name is a cute touch. Even if your Greek mythology is a bit rusty, you probably have heard of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and the protagonist of Homer's Iliad saga. Mozilla.org's Eudora Open Source project is named "Penelope", and Penelope daughter of Icarius of Sparta, was Odysseus' wife who waited over twenty years for him to return home to her from his Odyssey.

I hope that we won't have to wait 20 years for a decent Eudora successor. The Infinity Data Systems Odysseus mission statement continues:

"Needless to say, we were saddened by Qualcomm's abandonment of Eudora. And while we have the utmost respect for the Thunderbird/Eudora team, like many Eudora users, we don't believe that modifying Thunderbird to mimic Eudora offers Eudora users the features, functionality, or experience they've come to love and depend on. Its our belief that only an application written from the ground up can adequately succeed a program as great as Eudora."

I couldn't agree more. The original Eudora was a work of genius, and it - not another, IMHO inferior, email program must be the inspiration of a worthy successor.

Infinity Data Systems originally said that an initial Odysseus beta will be released by the end of the year, with the final release projected for toward the end of Q1 2008. 2007 is pretty much gone, and no beta announcement yet, but it's not unusual in software development for things to run behind projections. They pledge that "the final application will offer full backward compatibility with Eudora, utilize existing Eudora mailboxes and settings, and offer the features and functionality that Eudora users are accustomed to, while at the same time improving on those areas where Eudora lagged behind, such as HTML rendering and OS integration."

Music to this Eudora aficionado's ears.

If you're interested in keeping up with the development of Odysseus, you can either keep checking the Odysseus Web page, which, will be updated frequently, or sign up to receive email updates by sending an email to

PowerMail 5.5.2
[OS X 10.3.9 or later]

With 63% of all messaging traffic now identified as spam (source: BrightMail 3/2004), how can dealing with e-mail become pleasurable again ?

Since the announcement of PowerMail 1.0 in August 1995, bringing a distinctive experience to Macintosh users has been our primary focus.

With the release of PowerMail 5, defeating spam takes center stage:

With enhanced filtering mechanisms, a Spam filter assistant and intimate integration of SpamSieve for those who need it, you're about to rediscover e-mail as uncluttered as it used to be.

New conditions and actions allow finer filtering of mailing-list traffic and help you organize your centers of interest in an orderly fashion; and while AppleScripts could previously be triggered by filters, scripts can now also extend the set of built-in filter conditions as well.

Benchmarking has shown PowerMail to search up to 7 times faster as Apple's Mail.app, thanks to our exclusive FoxTrot engine.

Indexing itself typically takes less that 1/20th of a second per received message, and mail databases of up to 2048 megabytes can instantly and precisely mined using a variety of search criteria.

While major upgrades of intensely-used software sometimes place a product's identity at risk, PowerMail 5 carefully balances innovation with continuity, preserving its original trademark of speed and reliability.

New in PowerMail 5.5.2 Univeral Binary:

  • New search feature and performance increase

  • It is now possible to search words ending with a given pattern (by putting a "*" wildcard at the beginning of the string, i.e: *pattern ) or

  • words containing a pattern (by adding "*" wildcards around the pattern i.e.: *pattern*

  • Includes a new version of the FoxTrot core search engine, with greatly accelerated wildcard (partial words terminated with a * star character) searches, including multiple partial words

  • Leopard compatibility

  • PowerMail is now compatible with developer builds of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on Intel Macs, and uses the latest version of SSL contained in the OS (also Leopard-compatible on PowerPC)

  • "Switch user environment" did not work correctly with developer builds of Mac OS X 10.5

  • Fixes and enhancements

  • Improved mouse wheel support in HTML messages

  • Mail filters with the condition "includes at least one of the words" could behave unexpectedly when the search string starts with a punctuation character

  • PowerMail should no longer crash when Mac OS X's spell checker is broken

  • When a connexion error occured, PowerMail was sometimes creating an empty, partial message

  • the [other field...] [does not contain] filter criterion was erroneously evaluated to false when the specified field is not present in the message

  • Please also note that simultaneous to PowerMail 5.5.2, we are releasing version 1.2 of our FoxTrot Personal Search advanced file find-by-content application, with several enhancements as well.

SeaMonkey 1.9 Internet Suite
(OS X 10.2 or later)

SeaMonkey is one of the three main browsers developed and distributed through the Open Source Mozilla organization - a suite browser based on the same Mozilla Gecko rendering engine as Firefox and Camino, combining a Web-browser with a built-in email and newsgroup client, an IRC chat client, and an HTML authoring/editing module - and is essentially an up-to-date version of the old Mozilla and Netscape Communicator Web applications.

SeaMonkey is big (64.4 MB for the latest Universal Binary builds, vs 32.4 MB for Opera 9, which also includes an email client). It also is showing its age, doesn't support OS X Services, but SeaMonkey is a smooth, quick, and reliable performer.

Aside from the much more attractive SeaMonkey logo, this browser otherwiise looks almost exactly like Mozilla 1.7 in terms of appearance, as well as including a Netscape Communicator style email client, a WYSIWYG web page composer and an IRC chat application, plus mozilla.org's DOM inspector and JavaScript debugger tools, SeaMonkey 1.9 is a powerful, comprehensive, and secure internet software package.

SeaMonkey Email Features - Mail & Newsgroups

Junk mail controls helps you take back control of your e-mail from spammers. SeaMonkey's adaptive junk mail control gets smarter with use and is personalized to the e-mail that you receive. The Junk Mail Controls feature can evaluate your incoming messages and identify possible junk (or unsolicited) messages. The feature uses the Bayesian classification method, which requires that you first train Mozilla by showing it a bunch of mail that is junk, and a bunch of mail that is not. Then, you let it auto-classify new mail for you. If Mozilla makes any mistakes, you can correct them.

Manage your mail with customizable Labels and Mail Views. Color code your e-mail to help you prioritize. Sort your mail with views to help you through your e-mail much faster.

Multiple Accounts support helps you manage all your mail through one interface.

SeaMonkey Messenger includes Enterprise ready features such as S/MIME, return receipts, Address Books, LDAP support, and digital signing.

System requirements:
* Mac OS X 10.2 or later
* PowerPC processor (266 MHz or faster recommended)
* 64 MB RAM (256 MB recommended)
* 100 MB of free hard disk space (significantly less space is required if you reduce the cache size)

System support:
PPC/Intel

Free

Fixed in SeaMonkey 1.1.9:

• XUL popup spoofing variant (cross-tab popups)

• Java socket connection to any local port via LiveConnect

• Privacy issue with SSL Client Authentication

• HTTP Referrer spoofing with malformed URLs

• Crashes with evidence of memory corruption

• JavaScript privilege escalation and arbitrary code execution

Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.12
[OS X]

Thunderbird has been around for some time now, but in case you're not familiar, it is a full featured standalone email client based on the design of the Mail module in the Mozilla suite browser, which in turn was derived from the old Netscape Communicator Messenger module.

The Thunderbird developers' mission objective is to produce a cross platform standalone mail application using the XUL user interface language. The intended customer is someone who uses Mozilla Firebird (or another standalone browser) as their primary browser and wants a good, solid email client to go with it.

image

Thunderbird incorporates the three-pane mode familiar to users of OS X Mail and Outlook Express, et al., It's fast, reasonably easy to configure, and will be familiarly intuitive to use for folks who like three-pane email clients. It's also freeware, and one of the most sophisticated free email clients.

New in Thunderbird 2.0.0.12:
http://en.www.mozilla.com/en/thunderbird/2.0.0.12/releasenotes/

New in Thunderbird 2
• Message Tags: Create your own tags for organizing email. Messages can be assigned any number of tags. Tags can be combined with saved searches and mail views to make it easier to organize email.
• Visual Theme: Thunderbird 2's theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability and maximize screen real estate.
• Session History Navigation: Back and Forward buttons allow navigation through message history.
• Advanced Folder Views: Customize the folder pane to show favorite, unread or recent folders.
• Easy Access to Popular Web Mail Services: Gmail and .Mac users can access their accounts in Thunderbird by simply providing their user names and passwords.
• Improved Support For Extensions: Extensions can now add custom columns to the message list pane in addition to storing custom message data in the mail database.
• Improved New Mail Notification Alerts: New mail alerts include information such as the subject, sender and message preview text.
• Folder Summary Popups: Mouse over a folder with new messages to see a summary of the new messages in that folder.
• Saved Search Folder Performance: Search results for saved search folders are now cached, improving folder loading performance.
• Find As You Type: Finds and highlights message text as you type.
• Improved Filing Tools: Recent folder menu items for moving and copying messages to recently used folders. Move / Copy again functionality.
• Updates to the Extension System: The extension system has been updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions.
• New Windows installer: Based on Nullsoft Scriptable Install System, the new Windows installer resolves many long-standing issues.
• Windows Vista Support: Many enhancements and fixes for Windows Vista.

Thunderbird has an impressive features set, but it puzzles me why a one trick pony email application has to be an 11 MB download and a bloated 34 MB when expanded - not including user profile folders and such? I mean, Opera, which incorporates a full-featured Web browser, an email client and chat client/newseader into one application, is just 4.5 MB to download and 9.5 MB expanded. ThunderBird has fewer features than classic Eudora, but is about six times as large
Thunderbird will not allow a virus or worm to execute automatically. You can see what attachments have been sent to you without a virus being able to execute, and you would have to save a file to your system and deliberately run it before it could cause any harm.

Commendably, Thunderbird's mail files are in the standard plain text "mbox" format, which many mail programs can use or import. Some proprietary mail programs have a function to import from Eudora, which also uses the "mbox" format; this function should read your Mozilla mail files properly.

System requirements:

Operating Systems
• Mac OS X 10.2.x and later

Minimum Hardware
• Macintosh computer with an Intel x86 or PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
• 128 MB RAM (Recommended: 256 MB RAM or greater)
• 200 MB hard drive space

Mozilla Thunderbird is freeware.
