Apple's Video Vault

Motley Fool's Alyce Lomax says:

"It's probably a pretty common question for people who have been following Apple's skyrocketing popularity in musical venues -- from both a user and an investing point of view. What's next?

"An article on CNET's News.com site today highlighted one interesting new development. The new version of Apple's iTunes online music service and QuickTime includes the capability to watch video through iTunes, and the article ultimately brings up the question many might have been wondering -- just how far into digital media Apple's going to go."

PowerPage Wishlist: PowerBook

PowerPage's Jason D. O'Grady says:

"We're having so much fun with our iPod and iTunes Wishlist features that the next logical progression is PowerBooks. This article discusses some of features we'd like to see in the next PowerBook."

Items on Jason's list that particularly resonate with me are:
• Upgradedable processor or board
• More sturdy and smoother opening hinges
• Page up and down keys
• Easier access hard drive for replacement or upgrade

Symantec False Alert Floors Macs

The Register's John Leyden reports:

"A false positive in Norton AntiVirus (NAV) for Macintosh left many Apple fans fearful that their machines had become infected with a Trojan last week. The glitch - triggered by a rogue virus definition update - left Mac users running various versions of NAV for Mac under the false impression that their swap files were infected with malware called "Hacktool.Underhand". The bogus warnings were frequently accompanied by system crashes on machines running Mac OS X.

"Symantec quickly released updated definition files to resolve the problem but not before the SNAFU severally inconvenienced a significant number of Mac fans, who have vented their frustration on online discussion forums or by mailing El Reg."

Apple iTunes Sales Sail Past 400m

The Register's Tony Smith reports:

"Apple's online iTunes Music Store (ITMS) has sold more than 400m downloads.

"Tucked away in yesterday's press statement announcing new Nordic local ITMS operations, ITMS chief Eddy Cue said the company is now selling more than 500m songs a year. It passed the 350m mark last month."

Apple Continues To Boost Production Efficiency

Forbes reports:

"Piper Jaffray maintained an "outperform" rating on Apple Computer with a $52 price target. Piper pointed to Apple's improved production efficiency and strong demand. "Apple is continuing to improve production efficiency as supported by the fact that most products are being shipped on the same business day as the day of the order placement," the research outfit said."

Eminem Settles With Apple Over iPod Commercial

CNET News.com's Ina Fried reports:

"Apple Computer and Eminem have settled a long-running dispute over Apple's use of the rap star's music in an iPod commercial.

"Eminem's publisher, Eight Mile Style, filed a copyright infringement suit over a 2003 ad that featured a young boy wearing the signature white iPod headphones and singing Eminem's "Lose Yourself" aloud. Eight Mile Style contends that Apple did not have permission to use the rapper's song."

Kodak Seen Selling Consumer Inkjet Printers In '06

Reuters reports:

"Photography company Eastman Kodak Co. is expected to introduce consumer inkjet printers next year and could challenge entrenched makers such as Lexmark International Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., industry analysts said on Tuesday.

"Kodak executives have offered few details about inkjet printers since it mentioned the devices when it announced in September 2003 dramatic plans to shift its focus to digital photography and imaging services and away from traditional cameras and film."

eWeek: Apple Patches iTunes MPEG Decoding Flaw

"Apple Computer Inc. has debuted version 4.8 of its iTunes music-playing application, which adds support for a few new features and fixes a serious security vulnerability.

The update is Apple's third serious security fix in as many weeks, following a combined update last week repairing 20 bugs, and an April patch for OS X and the Safari browser. All three have included vulnerabilities that could allow an Internet attacker to take over a system."

ExtremeTech: The Age of the Operating System

"A few years ago, the usual mantra for choosing a PC was simple: Users ran applications, most applications ran on Microsoft Windows, ergo, most users would buy Windows PCs. But any empire or monopoly eventually becomes a target for competition. Nature seems to abhor vacuums and monopolies. So while Microsoft may view its raft of up-and-coming competitors as barbarians at the gates, the added competition presages a time when operating systems will be both more and less relevant than ever."

eWeek: Malicious Widgets May Torment Tiger Users

"Late last week, "Stephan.com," a Los Angeles-based actor and programmer, fell upon a potential vulnerability in Mac OS 10.4 Tiger's new Dashboard application layer.

Stephan, who has already developed several Dashboard widgets-including two "ambient monitors" that work both with Apple's Mail program and with Gmail, called flores and coras-discovered that what he described as "annoying widgets" can be created and installed fairly easily."

Mac Night Owl: The Tiger Report: What About These Silly Annoyances?

All right, I accept the fact that the perfect operating system will never be produced, although I can dream. I also accept the fact that in the rush to make a release date, things may be overlooked, with the expectation they'll be dealt with later. And it isn't just the usual bugs that must be dealt with. If the bug is serious enough, you just know that it'll be dealt with in the .1 or .2 release, right?

eWeek: The Truth Behind VOIP Vulnerabilities

"Those considering IP PBX deployment worry about denial of service attacks, ID theft, unauthorized use, viruses, voicemail spam and other IP network dangers. But are these always valid concerns? What are the possible remedies, and where are the best places to deploy them?"
